GENERAL INFORMATION

Josiah Covey (Pronunciation: Jo-sai-ah Co-vay), Josiah, as many others in his line of trade, is a wandering man who seeks to aid whomever he's able to do, instinctively using his life, or coin, in order to do so. As of late, he's been seen primarily near Revenant's Toll in Mor Dhona, investigating pleas of help one after the other.

APPEARANCE

The Highlander stands roughly at six fulm and five ilm(6'5), weighting a little over 275 ponze, most of the weight being from his musculature. His skin is a dark olive shade, due to his heritage, as well as the time he spends outside. Most of his body is covered with "trophies" of past conflicts. Scars, both deep and shallow, run from his face all the way down to his heels, almost fully covering his large body. His black and blue hair reaches well beyond his shoulders. Both out of style and practicality, he has a majority of it braided, allowing a bang over his right eye. From far away, his irises seem to be completely jet-black, however, with closer inspection, one would see they are a darker brown. Encircling his jaw is a rough beard, trimmed to about half an ilm.

PERSONALITY

Calm. Carefree. Compassionate. Towards almost everyone he meets, Josiah give off a calming aura. He typically keeps his words to himself, but shares his smile to all around him. When left to his own devices, Josiah spends most of his time enjoying the world around him, or tending to his gear and Chocobo companion, or with a book on rare occasions. He's not one to start conflict, but he's more then glad to end it, usually taking on the role of a mediator. However, if he sees someone whom he sees as innocent about to be harmed, he will always intervene. With those he's more comfortable with, he presents a more goofy side, tending to joke around or roughhouse with his companions. Naturally, going down the path of a paladin, Josiah has a respect for authority figures, and when presented, will fit the role of a leader as best he can, usually with easy success. However, despite his respect towards authority, if he sees someone being wronged, he will go to their defense, effectively earning him the reputation of being a vigilante.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Body Claim: See above.

Voice Claim: Bob from Tekken. Examples

COMBAT & WEAPONRY

During combat, Josiah's primary focus is to protect his allies, happily becoming a human shield. While his offensive capabilities are lacking, his ability to intercept attacks for another and taking whatever is thrown at him is excellent. Since he started his career as a Gladiator, he's trained with sword and shield daily, learning to use his own body to subdue others should he find both away from himself. It has only been a few years since he took up a conjurer's staff, but he never skips the chance to practice his conjury.

Falchion

A simple longsword, with only one side sharp. He favors it for the length of the blade, as well as the small hook along the blunt. With it, his attacks consist primarily of thrusts and hooks. From the beginning, he was taught to disable, disarm, and subdue. With this type of weapon, doing so makes it noticeably easier.

Kite Shield

A rather plain looking shield, offering a balance between protection and mobility. In combat, he's always behind it, pressing his sword beside the steel to poke at his opponents. When he finds himself with allies, he uses the shield to cover them more then himself, leaving the softer parts of his armor exposed.

Oaken Crook

A wooden staff, a very common sight among the Conjurer's of Gridania. It's rare for him to wield it, being more comfortable protecting others with his physical strengths, but he'll carry it with him from time to time, finding it helpful for when the act of conjury is needed.

BACKSTORY

Youth: Josiah doesn't know much of where his ancestry originated from. As far as he knows, his family had lived in a small Corerthas hamlet for a few generations. For as long as he could remember, his father had been missing from his life. When he asked his mother, or any of the other villagers, he was told he was a great and kind adventurer, albeit fairly unknown. Throughout his early life, he was told of some of the deeds his father preformed, always leaving him awestruck. Whenever he asked where his father was, the unanimous reply was that he was living another adventure, making the world a better place for his son and collecting coin to bring back. Every year Josiah was hopeful his father would come back, with stories of trials and tribulations, as well as enough coin to put him and his mother in the lap of luxury for the rest of their days. But he never did. Still, Josiah hoped and dreamed, and because of that, he made the decision to follow his father's footsteps.

Most of his childhood was uneventful. There were only a dozen other children in the village, however, even at a young age he tended to keep to himself, not fully comfortable around the strangers until enough time had passed. Most of his early education came from his mother. While it was nothing sophisticated, she was able to teach him most of the basic knowledge about the world. How to read and write, mathematics, and common history about Eorzea. However, the most important lesson she was taught him, was compassion. While the stories of his father's selflessness introduced the idea, his mother always made sure he knew what it meant, and how it was done. Whenever he fought with another child, or he caused any trouble, she would always guide him with a kind, sometimes strict, hand.

To both better the world like his father was doing, and to make him proud once they met, he began to offer his hand to anyone around the small village, once he was old enough. From farming to housework, Josiah did whatever needed to be done, and while he usually didn't ask for compensation, he typically received some form of it. Through years of saving his gil, he was finally able to afford a blade and passage to Ul'dah, the same city his father headed for, at the young age of 16. Although everyone, including his mother attempted to stop him, they also knew the kind of man he was, and would become. So when he showed his unyielding determination, they gave in. When the day came to leave, a large amount of people gave him small parting gifts. Some gave standard adventuring tools, some gave food, and other gave much needed gil, should the worst happen and he needed a way back home. Most important of the parting gifts was what his mother gave him. Before his carriage left, his mother pulled him aside from the rest. Without saying anything, she put something into the palm of his hand. When he opened his hand, he was met with an old silver ring, a small sapphire gem embedded in the center. He looked to his mother with a furrowed brow, but she quickly answered, stating his father had left it behind for his child, for when he was old enough to venture out into the world. With a few tears and an embrace exchanged, they parted ways. In all of his life, Josiah felt closer to his father then ever before.

Becoming an adult: The sight of Ul'dah threw him for a loop. Always accustomed to the slow paced life of the hamlet, the bustling city offered winding streets and dark shadows. Had it not been for a certain man, he would have fell victim to a petty con. The elder man, a gruff Sea Wolf by the name of Ahlditar Roehbhar, gave young Josiah a harsh, relentless scolding once he was safe. When the man demanded the youth to return home, Josiah met him with eyes set ablaze. He told the man he would never return home, not until he became a shield for the innocent. While the man initially laughed in his face, causing Josiah some anger and embarrassment, the old man looked him over a few time in silence. When he was satisfied, he told Josiah to follow him, telling him that there was a way to reach his goal. Josiah hesitated, but after a quick though, agreed. After a short, silent walk, they arrived at a place Josiah had never seen before. What startled him the most was the clashing of steel, and the cheering of crowed. It was the first time he had ever seen a gladiatorial arena. The man stopped and told Josiah to watch the fight that was taking place. He did so, watching the fighters partake in a dance of sword and shield play. It had been so long since something left Josiah awestruck. Seeing his face, the man laughed once more and motioned Josiah to continue walking. With another small walk, they found themselves in a room filled with others like the gladiators, honing their skills and bodies. It was there that Josiah found out the man who saved him was also one of these fighters, and a rather skilled one at that. He gave Josiah an offer. At the current state he was in, there was no way Josiah could even protect himself, let alone others. So, he would take the young lad under his wing and train him to be a skilled gladiator just like him. It was going to be hard, and some days he would wish for death, but if he was so determined to become a hero of peace, he would need to earn to power to do so. Without a second though, Josiah agreed. He knew the man was right, and if he passed that opportunity up, another one would never come. Thus began the most brutal years he had ever faced.

Life with Ahlditar was never uneventful. Between relentless training sessions, the Roegadyn taught Josiah other things he would need to know in order to survive in the world, not just as an adventurer, but as a man as well. The sort of unspoken honor he should have towards other warriors, how to survive outside the safety of cities and villages, and how to protect himself in large cities such as Ul'dah. Their bonds deepened every moon they spend together, and it wasn't long before they felt more like father and son. Josiah always asked his mentor about his life, but he tended to keep most of it unknown, giving the young man small snippets after satisfying him in training. It was after the second year of his training that the Calamity took place. Just like with most, he wasn't able to remember much of the event, only fuzzy bits and pieces. After the event, when citizens of Ul'dah took to rebuilding what was destroyed, that he made the grim discovery of his master's passing. The man had become a father figure to him, showing him what it means to become a warrior, not only in skill and body, but in honor as well. Once the city started to regain itself, Josiah, as well as other gladiators from the guild, took the time to honor his passing and mourn. Josiah was hit the hardest, damning Dalamund and the Twelve. Although filled with depression and rage, Josiah focused his energy to furthering his training, and as time passed, the anger and sorrow subsided, knowing that his master would have never wanted him to carry those feelings for long. After another two years of his training, he became one of the best gladiators the guild had to offer. It was then that he turned his sights to the Sultansworn. Since the calamity took place, he had heard they were even allowing free adventures join their ranks, and once he felt he was prepared for another grueling trial, he made his way for the Hustings Strip.

FAMILY & TRIBE

These are mostly backstory-related relationships.

LIST OF FAMILY MEMBERS
Venetia Covey, mother. (🔒)
CHARACTER’s Thoughts: "The strongest woman I've ever known."

With the help of a few other villagers, she was able to give Josiah the best childhood she was able to. From what she has revealed to Josiah, it was her family that has held deep roots within the Coerthas highlands. Her mother and father passed before he was born, and most of her siblings had spread throughout Eorzea. She never received formal education in any trade, however, she had learned whatever she could through books Josiah's father had given her before he left. From clothcraft to farming, she has a basic understanding of everything needed for a domestic farm life, which became essential once Josiah was born. While Josiah was growing up, she didn't have a solid way of earning gil, instead trading her services and knowledge for food and household goods. Some moons were harsher then others, but neither minded too much.

Whenever the subject of Josiah's father comes about, she usually puts on a deadpan smile. She would always recount his tales fondly, however, Josiah always felt a hidden sorrow in her heart, and whenever he tried to confront her about it, she would always dismiss such things. But as the years continued, Josiah started to pick up the same feelings from others who remember his father, and while he never obtained the truth before his departure, he always wonders about it when his thoughts drift to the man he's sworn to follow.

Aldawin Geier, father. (🔒)
CHARACTER's Thoughts: "A great hero, and the man I want to become."

All who have met the man tend to say the same thing, that he's a warrior send by the Twelve themselves. Selfless, honorable, and courageous are always used to describe him whenever tales are told of him. Once a traveling adventurer, he temporarily settled down after saving a small hamlet deep within the Coerthas highlands, where he met beauty incarnate. Together, him and Venetia conceived a child, and begun to plan a homely life together. But it didn't take long for his legs to ache for adventure, and with neither of the two know an actual trade, the gil Aldawin brought with him quickly dwindled, and the life of adventuring grew too appealing to give up indefinitely. After much convincing, of both his wife and those around the village, he was able to leave knowing full well that his love and their child would be safe, until he returned with enough gil to keep them all happy for life. Moons passed after he left, but no word of him or his deeds ever reached the village. As moons turned to years, and years to decades, some grew disdain towards Aldawin, others worried for the worst.

LIST OF NON-FAMILY RELATIONS
Ahlditar Roehbhar, Master Gladiator. (🔒)
CHARACTER’s Thoughts: "Another whom I owe everything I have to."

Before his early death, Josiah had grown quite close to the rugged giant. Although the father/son relationship they shares sometimes gave him bitter thoughts, he still enjoyed having the young man around, teaching him everything he had come to learn in life. He never shared all of his life with Josiah, though, he did share short stories every now and then, most important being how he became a gladiator. Years before Josiah was born, Ahlditar was a standard adventurer, taking to sea rather then land. Through his adventures, he grew soft on one of his shipmates, and both of them decided to leave the ship behind and start a domestic life in Limsa Lominsa. And for the most part, all went well. Ahlditar became a dockhand in the port city, and earned enough to keep his wife, and soon to be daughter, comfortable. And before he knew it, the day of his daughter's birth came. But as soon as his wife went into labor, was when problems started to arise. Joy turned to panic as the world started to spin out of control for Ahlditar. He tried to make sense of the chaos around him, holding his lover's hand to comfort both her and himself. But it was when he felt her hand go limp that he snapped back into reality. He couldn't feel anything, every sense in his body going numb. He heard the midwife make noise, but no words reached him. Without saying anything, he just left, his old axe in hand, and began to live his life day by day.

It was years later when he arrived at the desert city of Ul'dah. Just like with every other settlement, it wasn't long before he found himself in a fight. Usually it was with villagers, but this time, it was with actual fighters. Of course he held his own, but it was with one man, a gladiator, that he met his match. After the long fight, the Roegadyn just stormed off, retiring to an inn room. But the next night, the same thing happened, with the same gladiator. The more the two met, the more rage built up inside of him, until he finally exploded after their brawl. First with pure anger, which slowly turned into sorrow. The gladiator was taken aback, seeing him only as a thug. He listened to Ahlditar's tale, and after some consideration, gave him an offer. To join the gladiator's guild, and continue forward with his life. He eventually accepted, and through all his training, began to recover from his loss. When he was a man to actually be proud of, he ventured back to Limsa Lominsa, and put to rest his sorrow for his lost wife and child.

The Pathfinders. ($)
CHARACTER’s Thoughts: "I'm honored to know the lot of them."

Recently, Josiah has found himself enlisted into the Pathfinder's company. While he's always on the move, never in the company's estate for more then a night or two, he's always found himself in the middle of their affairs. Not that he minds. They've offered welcoming arms to him, such companionship being a blessing to the man. In turn, he does all that he can to return the favor, giving himself as a stalwart ally.

Eaubront Shopont. (🔒)
CHARACTER’s Thoughts: "Good man, passed the liquor."

One of his first budding friendships while working with the Pathfinders, Josiah is always happy to be around the man, and help him anyway he's able to. He understands that Eaubront is simply doing whatever he's able to in order to keep himself, and those around him, together, even through the stress the Pathfinders put on him. An it's that reason as to why the Highlander respects him, and sees him as a good man. While Josiah feels they haven't had the time or the experiences to be close friends, he's hopeful that as their times continues, he'll be able to find such a thing within the Elezen.

GUIDELINES

Overall, I'm pretty chill as far as guidelines go. I don't have an extensive list of 'Do's or 'Don't's or things that I personally find triggering. So chances are, you won't offend me or make me uncomfortable unless you're trying to or just being really skeevy in general. Still, for the sake of making sure everyone's on the same page here, let me make a few mentions in particular:

I WILL NOT...
