Personality

Hiro is something of a clean slate, free from the burdens of whatever life he once lived before amnesia befell him. He is friendly to anyone who hasn't proved themselves unworthy of his kindness, and is perfectly willing to share a table and a drink with complete strangers should they invite the opportunity. While he's happy with his comfortable life in La Noscea, he's lately found himself longing for something more, something new, and is more than willing to break a rule or two for adventure. He carries with him an almost childlike sense of wonder, and sometimes naïveté, that often causes others to mistake him for being younger than he truly is. Conversely, his youthful nature does belie a certain wisdom, oft shown in seemingly mundane, yet equally meaningful statements about how he thinks the world may work. He's an incredible lightweight, when it comes to drink, and tends to turn into a drooling mass of gibberish and bad puns after just one mug of ale. Despite his outward friendliness, large crowds of strangers raise anxieties from him, leading him to prefer small groups of close friends over a horde of acquaintances. He's very protective of those closest to him, sometimes even a little clingy if he's feeling fragile, yet does just as well on his own if need be. He's prone to bouts of melancholy, but has yet to be seen angry. Ironically, he also has a good memory.

His alignment is Neutral Good. His nameday has been revealed to be July 11th.

Likes

  • Reading. Hiro is not only quite smart, but has an incredible love of learning. He was quick to re-learn how to read and write Eorzean, and spends much of his free time delving into books of all sorts.
  • Cats. No one has an explanation, but Hiro is the first to melt for any sort of feline creature. He's even adopted one of his own, whom he calls "Twinkie."
  • Food! Both Doman and Eorzean. He's in the process of figuring out how to cook for himself.
  • Magic. The spells etched into his arm have intrigued Hiro, and he wonders what clues of his past he can uncover through the Arcane.
  • Pun-based humor.

Dislikes

  • Doing ANYTHING halfway. This presents itself in strange ways, particularly through the cleanliness of his room. It's either really clean, or really messy. There IS no in between.
  • Carelessness when handling small animals. He's too clumsy to care as much about items, but drop a puppy? Step on a kitten's tail? And there will be pain.
  • Rude people. Particularly the ones who attack random strangers for the sake of banditry.
  • Large gatherings of people, especially strangers, by which he is easily overstimulated.
  • The Bismark. He thinks it's overrated.

Friends and Good Standing

Kri'sie Crimsonlion and Yuki Kurenai: Hiro met both Kri'sie and Yuki recently at Bronze Lake, after being invited by the former to join their impromptu hot spring party. Hiro found the brash, loud Hellsguard Kri'sie to be funny and welcoming, despite her abrasive nature. He also found a kindred spirit in the Doman Yuki, and they talked at length about the unusual nature of Eorzean culture. (Despite Hiro most-likely being Eorzean himself.)

Gwyn Trahaern: While they've scare met, Hiro quickly took a liking to Gwyn, finding her career as a reporter beyond intriguing. Their first meeting was filled with a variety of stories, silly humor, and more talk of food than the average man could stomach. Pun not intended.

Judiel Farendaire: Hiro first met Judiel on one of his once-regular trips to Limsa Lominsa. He found himself first taken with her native Ishgardian culture, but even moreso, the Elezen herself. Hiro has found a kindred spirit in Judiel, as they share a strong wanderlust that has yet to be tempered. They have spent much time roaming the forests which surround Foundation, and over that time, they have not only crafted a strong friendship, but uncovered more romantic feelings for each other. Despite the nature of their relationship, which is forbidden by the Holy See of Ishgard, the pair continues to perservere in the hopes that some day they might find acceptance.

Acquaintances

Aronaux Farendaire: Judiel's elder brother has been known to dislike foreigners, and Hiro is no exception. But with the volatility of Ishgard at the present, Aronaux has come to appreciate the willingness of Hiro and other adventurers to assist, for which the hyur is immensely grateful. Now if only anyone could place why Hiro's cat hates Aronaux so much...

Aekira Swyfte: Recently revealed to be the amnesiac Matsubara's younger brother, Aekira has begun working tirelessly to restore at least some of Hiro's past memories. He desperately clings to what's left of his family, and seems somewhat unaware of the fundamental differences between Hiro now and Scero as he once was. Hiro himself believe's he's not ready for what may come of his brother's efforts, as the very mention of his birth name makes him nauseous.

Biography

Arrival

About a year and a half ago, a small Doman refugee settlement on La Noscea was disturbed by a strange occurrence. A mysterious man recognized by no one seemingly fell out of the sky, crashing through the boughs of pine trees and landing in a rose bush. He wore no clothing and carried no keepsakes, having only a series of mysterious tattoos to possibly identify him by. When he awoke, he struggled with speech, but managed just enough to communicate that he had no knowledge of where, or WHO he was. The mystery man spent some time recovering and relearning. He quickly remembered how to properly speak, read, and write, but little else. The refugees dubbed him "Matsubara," for the circumstances in which he was found, and soon after, the man chose the forename "Hiro." He's lived peacefully with his new family, forming particularly strong bonds with the three who found him, Rinko, Stahl, and Maiya, as well as Elala, the farmhand who took them in. On one occasion, however, peace was disturbed, and the settlement was attacked by a small group of bandits. It is then that Hiro discovered his tattoos' tie to Arcanima, instinctively using one of the spells to repel the attacker. Since then, Hiro has grown restless, trying to uncover the secrets of the spells into his body.

Since falling in love with the noble Judiel Farendaire, Hiro has relocated, at least temporarily, to Ishgard. He's been somewhat sidetracked from his personal issues as he's attempted to support Judie in her many political endeavors. However, just weeks ago, Hiro had a chance encounter with an injured man named Aekira Swyfte, who called Hiro by his own brother's name before losing consciousness. Hiro remained in denial, passing it off as a hallucination, up to the very moment Aekira awoke. Their first encounter after the ordeal confirmed that Hiro Matsubara is, in fact, the missing Swyfte brother.

Though he'd been searching for memories his previous life, Hiro has become entirely overwhelmed with the arrival of his brother. And though Aekira brought with him information, he did not manage to awaken any of the former Swyfte's memories. The future has become increasingly uncertain for Hiro.

At the time, virtually nothing is known about Hiro from before his appearance at the refugee colony. As more is revealed, more will be added.
