Julian Rin
[edit]
Julian Rin There is something cold in the eyes of this Keeper. Julian is a small Miqo’te with a strong Napoleon Complex*. He is often covered in heavy fabrics and keeps his back straight, chin high, and despite his short stature, has a way of looking down on those around him. His words are often cutting, perhaps even cruel, and his sense of empathy verges on sociopathic. Given the hue of his dusky skin and the paleness of his eyes, there is no doubt about his Keeper origins, though unlike most of his kin he shows little respect towards his tribal heritage and has gone so far as to abandon his birthname. Perhaps one of the more offsetting features separating Julian from his fellow Keepers (and Miqo’te in general) is his elevated speech patterns and his firm grasp on vocabulary. He seems very obviously well-educated and has little tolerance for those who are not. *Napoleon Complex: A term describing a theoretical condition occurring in people of short stature. It is characterized by overly-aggressive or domineering social behavior, and carries the implication that such behavior is compensatory for the subject's stature. I realize that this is a real-world term, but I couldn’t think of an appropriate Eorzean alternative.
Perhaps the most notable feature that someone is likely to find for Julian is his height. Even for a Miqo’te, he is very short and some may even describe him as scrawny. He stands at a staggering five fulmes, two ilms (5’ 2” / 157 centimeters), putting him even shorter than most females. His body-shape is not as immediately visible, though easily insinuated. He is always found wearing heavy cloth that covers him from at least the neck down, though the shape of the cloth dons no visible definition, leading one to believe that Julian has little natural muscle mass or body fat. His hands are covered in gloves that often go up to his elbows, and boots that stretch up to his knees. His skin is a dusky tone, a tease between blue and gray that seems to change with the lighting. Those who are able to get close enough might be able to note that his skin has a very fine layer of fur (like peach fuzz) that, much like any hair or fur, darkens when it gets wet. The fur of his ears and tail are undeniably black, though the fur is coarser than one might think, and the Miqo’te can be very irritable if touched without permission. His tail is long, much like most Keepers, however it is uncharacteristically stiff and seems only capable of basic movement, never curling. On rare occasion, one might see the man with his gloves off. They will find that the Miqo’te has no claws or nails, in fact his fingers have all been cut down to the first knuckle (including thumbs). It can be assumed that this makes many day-to-day activities very difficult, and it is easier to understand why he wears gloves. Furthermore, when he speaks or most notably when he bares his fangs (often a display of aggression) one can easily see that his fangs are made of silver (implants).
Beaten. Kicked. Never Broken. Many people would be of the idea that Julian is not someone they want to spend much time around. On the most obvious levels, the Miqo’te displays classist, sexist, and narcissistic attitudes towards those around him. He has little to no patience or tolerance to those he deems ‘beneath’ him and his level of empathy verges on sociopathic. Put simply, Julian is an asshole who seems to think far too highly of himself, and far too little of those around him. He shows a very strong and obvious dislike for women, especially ‘strong’ women. A closer eye or a patient soul may, however, see past some of the bluster and malice. Julian will never cow to anyone, no matter their social status, rank, or physical imposition against him. He never backs down from a challenge, even if he is sure to lose, and puts his all into everything he does. When he sets his mind to a task or a goal, he will more likely work himself to death than not see it through to finish. He is a heavily determined soul under the guise of a workaholic, though perhaps even that isn’t quite right… Though he never shows fear, at least not in expression or voice, one might find that his actions speak louder. Everything he does must be perfect, and is held to ridiculously high standards that often only he sets for himself. Failure is never an option. He seems to have little concern for his own wellbeing when in the throes of a project or desired goal. Even upon completion, however, it is never good enough, and if given the opportunity he will nitpick his own work until he sets his mind to redoing the whole thing. He has a strong aversion to being touched, especially without his permission. This is magnified considerably for women, often to the point of lashing out towards them. This behavior is entirely instinctual, and often results in hissing, snarling, swiping, or swinging at anyone who tries to touch him. Be warned that attempts to hug, shake hands, or pet, may result in a character being hurt.

It is obvious by the shape of his figure that Julian is not much of a physical fighter. Though in desperate situations he may lash out in a fit of panic or anger, he is much more prone to using his mind or, more specifically, his magic. Though never properly trained in any form of combat, Julian has learned (and continues to learn) both Conjury and Thaumaturgy as a means to both protect and heal himself when necessary. Moreover, he is likely to berate and lecture his victims into submission rather than resort to violence.
Julian’s backstory is relatively gruesome. If you are easily ‘triggered’, squeamish, or upset by fictional characters in awful situations, do yourself a favor and scroll down to the bottom of this section and read the tl;dr where I’ll just touch on the important facts without going into anything that might upset someone. Furthermore, your character has no reason to know Julian’s backstory. Your character is not from Julian’s past, you are not a family member, nor do I accept ‘psychic’ or ‘the echo’ as an excuse. If you claim to know any of this info ICly without Julian having explicitly told your character, that is godmodding/metagaming and will result in the termination of our RP.
Born to the name Atol’a, Julian was the first son of Atol of the Yuun clan. He was a weak infant, small and silent, and most of the clan didn’t expect him to survive his first week let alone his first winter. He was an obvious runt who was no good at hunting or fighting. The clan made little effort to let Atol’a know that he was a hindrance upon them, but despite his best efforts, he simply couldn’t measure up to the other younglings. After his thirteenth namesday, when he failed his final test, his mother sold him into slavery. Unfit for labor and, for most, too young for pleasure, Atol’a spent several months in limbo. His masters had him help take care of the more unruly slaves while seeking to pawn him off, earning Atol’a several bruises and injuries, and the slavers had no qualms molesting him even at his young age. Though he was punished every time, the young Keeper attempted to fight which only ever earned him more injuries and, unwittingly, more enjoyment from his captors. Finally, after six months of being without a proper owner, Atol’a was sold for pittance to one Lady Rosmina of House Rosethorn. At first, Atol’a was relatively thankful to be around a woman who was of such obvious status. Lady Rosmina was beautiful, strong, and no-nonsense. Her servants and slaves jumped at every order they were given, rushing to complete it to the letter. He failed to notice the looks of pity he received after he entered the house. Rosmina told Atol’a that she was an artist, and that she would make her new pet into something beautiful… It was on his second night in his new home that Atol’a caught a glimpse of what was to come. When a servant tripped and spilled the woman’s wine, she had one of her guards hold the man down and broke his arm for the offense. Horrified by what he was witnessing, Atol’a rushed to the man’s side to try and stop the violence, scratching and clawing at Rosmina and her guards. One of her guards broke his nose and held the Miqo’te youth down while the servant was taken away. Lady Rosmina, upset that her new pet would dare try to harm her, had Atol’a put through his first proper ‘lesson.’ Held down, he had his hands nailed down flat to a table, where Rosmina proceeded to cut the tips of each finger off to ‘declaw’ her pet. She assured that Atol’a was conscious for the whole ordeal, keeping him healed enough that he couldn’t ‘escape’ her lesson. This was only the first of many. Lady Rosmina was sadistic and cruel beyond measure. She took the utmost joy from someone else’s pain. She told Atol’a that because he was young, his skin was strong enough that she could heal him without much scarring, making him a perfect canvas for her art. She would have the boy strapped or nailed down (depending on her mood) flat, and proceeded to carve into his skin whatever she desired. Only his face was left (relatively) untouched, but nothing else was sacred. Other Lords and Ladies would come to ‘admire’ Lady Rosmina’s work, none of them taking pity on Atol’a who would, at times, be held down for days at a time. Once she grew tired of her work, Rosmina would heal the lacerations and punctures in preparation for her next piece. Beyond his place as Rosmina’s personal canvas, she would often subject him to the whims of her guards. This meant broken bones, molestation, rape, and just cruel pleasures. One evening, delirious from pain, he bit one of the guards in desperation, and Rosmina had his fangs ripped from his mouth. Nearing the age of twenty, Atol’as skin grew more resilient to Rosmina’s healing. More scars remained from her artwork, and he had developed a loss of sensation along most of his body. Eventually Rosmina deemed Atol’a no longer worthy of a canvas, and stopped healing him unless necessary to keep him alive. He became nothing more than a vessel for whatever twisted whim she had, keeping him starved and naked at all times. He knew that every day was one step closer to the final hell… When Rosmina would eventually grow tired of a slave, or one did something so atrocious she finally decided to kill them, she would have them strapped down and skinned alive. She was methodical and precise, ensuring that the process could last for days at a time before the body would finally give up. She hung the skins of her slaves around her Estate as a warning to all those who resided within what would eventually happen to them. Atol’a knew his time was coming fast as the woman grew more careless with the slurs she carved into his flesh, and the damage she did to his body. His day was coming. Of course it was only a matter of time before someone did something about Rosmina’s cruelty. One of Rosmina’s suppliers, a mole, had been working to tear the woman down. Atol’a never knew the specifics, he only knew the day that Julie showed up at Rosmina’s Estate under the guise of a smuggler with more slaves for her. Julie, and her crew, slaughtered Rosmina and her guards ‘for the greater good.’ Several of the woman’s slaves were put down (seen as unable to function, while some of them simply begged for death), however Atol’a was one of the few who were pulled to freedom. Julie took pity on the Keeper, even if Atol’a had no idea how to accept generosity. It took several years before Atol’a understood that he wasn’t a slave. Julie had the Miqo’te kept in a safe haven deep in the Shroud where he had time and space to come out of his own head. He spent much of that time taking advantage of the woman’s gifts of knowledge. A patient Roegadyn taught him how to read and write, putting up with the Keeper’s fits of rage and panic at the smallest infractions. Very slowly, Atol’a learned about the world around him. Though Julie was kind and patient, Atol’a was never able to keep calm around her. He quickly learned that he flew into a rage around females of any kind, even the one who was showing him kindness. He warred for a long time between his instinctual knee-jerk reactions to the world around him, and the logical (albeit cold) part of his brain who viewed much of the world around him with malice. He kept to himself in his small haven, trying to find some form of balance. Julie sent a Lalafelle to the Miqo’te when he was twenty-five, and began his training with Conjury to help clear his mind, and Thaumaturgy to help keep himself feeling safe and in-control of his surroundings. At the age of twenty-eight, Atol’a abandoned his birthname entirely. He wanted to be rid of who he had been before, wanted to be free of the terrified, near mindless creature he had been for so many years… He adopted the name Julian Rin, paying homage to the two people who had been of great import in his life. (More on Rin in the relations section) Once able to control himself more around people, Julian took his first tentative steps into the civilized world. Once more it took some amount of time before he was capable of maintaining control over his emotions, even with the meditative help of his teachings, but slowly he learned. He picked up new skills, learning quickly. He discovered he had a mind for business, cold, calculating, and patient. He used his knowledge of a wide variety of skills (that he’s still learning to this day) to maintain his business sense. He has had a good amount of success in most of his ventures. Though Julian always keeps people at arm’s length, something that is likely to never change.
Julian was a slave until he was twenty years old. He was born to the name Atol’a and was a runt all of his life. He was treated horribly during his time in slavery, giving him very deep trust issues and problems keeping mental stability. He was rescued at twenty, and spent eight years in relative solitude trying to learn how to be a person again, during which time he learned to read and write. After twenty-eight, he started venturing out into civilization where he started learning business senses, which he turned out to be pretty decent at.

Overall, I'm pretty chill as far as guidelines go. I don't have an extensive list of 'Do's or 'Don't's or things that I personally find triggering. So chances are, you won't offend me or make me uncomfortable unless you're trying to or just being really skeevy in general. Still, for the sake of making sure everyone's on the same page here, let me make a few mentions in particular:
