personality

Originally, before leaving the Shroud to become an official Gridanian citizen, Oko wasn't one for speaking. She knew how, yes, but her ability to was limited; her family had always been more of the quiet type, using as few words as possible to get the point across, and showing actions that spoke louder than any word - making Oko a naturally touchy person, because that's how she grew up. What she did know, entirely, was huntspeak, something she slips into only when she is comfortable with another miqo'te, say a member of her family, or a close friend. So, when she came to Gridania post-Calamity, she had to learn. Her mother was proficient enough, and worked to teach her and her younger brother the way of the common tongue, but it was still not enough to spare them strange looks whenever they spoke. So, Oko studied incredibly hard to learn how, and takes this very seriously. If she slips up, or someone points it out, she will grow sheepish and apologize on the spot, out of force of habit. She also makes sure to use larger words, as if to exemplify and mark how hard she has worked to become a more eloquent person. It's not to show off, but to prove she is the same as anyone else (though, it often comes off as her being a show-off.)

Though she is very sweet under most circumstances, she also tends to fuss over the finer details of things, though tries to be understanding of others despite it. This comes from two sources, her mother being obstinate, and the fact that she doesn't fully comprehend quite everything she sees. Books can only take you so far, and so she is still working to make sense of it all. As well as this, she can often be blunt, or too forthright, should her desire to voice herself (something her older sisters instilled in her from a young age) prove too strong against her will to be silent. She is also prone to being incredibly nosy as a result of the need to know everything, and thinking she knows whats best for her friends. Of course, these two things come under the pretense of her wanting to help them, as well, as she never means it in a rude way. She has a motherly air about her, putting on concern for each of her compatriots. She is stubborn and headstrong to those who know her, often unmoving in her beliefs and her work, but does her best to be understanding of those around her.

Oko is also very interested in others, choosing to stand in populated locations to listen to the things happening around her. She loves the sounds of people talking and chatting, not necessarily paying attention to their words but just the tones of their voice. Having grown up in a forest, it can be both quiet and droning, with the sounds of the creatures, and a crowded city street is no different to her. Merely a different kind of forest for her to wander through.

As a healer, she is very skilled. First of all, she is naturally inclined toward the aether and the elementals, adept at coaxing them out to heal those around her should the need arise. She grew up deeply disliking how the conjurers would use their powers so sparingly, almost cruelly, and wanted to find a way to be different from that, in order to help her friends and family, and further, everyone whose lives were scarred by the Calamity and onwards. While she finds conjury the most natural feeling, however, she has in time grown rather weary of using it, if only because of the actions (or, inaction, rather) of the conjurer's guild. She is currently also studying Arcanima, hoping to grow in skill.

She also knows, to an extent, many crafts in her journey to learn more and more. What she is best at is herbalism and potion making from her time growing up in the Shroud and recognizing what's good and what's bad, and a bit of sewing. Lately she's been focusing on her culinary skills, finding ways to improve recipes her mother once made for her when she was younger.

appearance

Standing at four fulm, nine ilm, Oko is very small - but not waifish. Muscle-mass is upkept, lean and hidden beneath what looks like jelly stregnth, holding much more strength to lift than one would expect from years of hunting with her bow. Her eyes cast a silvery shine, often night white in the right light, but in truth is closest to a soft blue color; her mother used to liken the way her and her daughter's eyes shined to Menphina herself. Skin is a soft, dusty color, and smattered with freckles and spots similar to that of a couerl stretching the length of her back, and her ears - her tail, too, has spots, but only around the base. All in all, she has a cute, compact frame; only a few scars in places covered by clothing where accidents on the hunt happened, or when she was simply a clumsy child.

Posture wise, Oko carries herself gently, each step appearing as calculated as the last. At times, almost stiffly so. She does her best to put on an air of hospitality and kindness, picked up from observing the conjury guild as well as the padjali, in order to make herself seem more approachable, where once she had been messy and wild, what one would call uncivilized. She has worked extensively to bring her perception up in the eye of the Gridanian public, which has always been scrutinizing, especially to those of her race.

At other times she can be gruff, when caught in the midst of hunting, remnants of a wild-child that spoke huntspeak more than she ever spoke common. However, she does her best to hide this, to keep up appearances - and will get embarrassed if its ever pointed out.

history
pre-roleplay

Born to a relatively small clan within the Twelveswood, Oko is the sixth daughter, and seventh out of eight. Immediate relatives include her mother Usei, her six sisters (closest of her being only two years older, Jeiha,) and two brothers, Usei’a and Usei’to - however the clan is around thirty-three in size. Unlike most clans, due to their rather small size otherwise, male Keepers were welcomed so long as they could provide and do work as told to, which led to Oko developing a close relationship with the man who sired her, a homely man by the name of Jurna’li Moshantu. Unfortunately, he would die by the time Oko hit seven cycles, on a hunting trip that comes back to the Miqo’te in fuzzy memories and dreams, never quite the same.

Her mother had been fond of him, something very close to love and adoration, and this left a blow to her and the family - which began to show cracks in the walls of her mother’s position as Matriarch. However, they would remain strong for years to come, however this tumultuous time would later rear its ugly head.

As a child, she spent much of her time traipsing through the forest with her elder siblings, and the men of her clan who hunted - including Karo’sae and Nheya’to, men who had grown weary of their travels and had decided to settle down in a place that welcomed them. They were not part of the clan by blood, but they were treated as such - Karo’sae even becoming a father to Oko’s youngest brother after the death of Jurna’li. She was a natural hunter, though the concept of death never truly sat well with her, until her mother sat with her to explain it all - how you use all parts of a creature you kill, so as not to make waste and anger the forest, to respect all around you as you’re meant to (something which resonated well with the young girl, who held a deep fascination for the wood she found herself in, for nature.) This resulted in a hobby she formed as way of bonding with her father before his death, and later, her eldest brother; bone carving. Together they would create intricate novelties to trade for coin, or merely to collect. She oft wears necklaces she made of them, seeing as she doesn’t practice it so often.

Around the age of ten cycles, Oko made first contact with that of the Sylphs. Before then, she had only ever seen them in passing, until the day came she met one by the name of Panxia who had straggled too far from Little Solace, who took the Keeper’s tiny hand (physically, and metaphorically,) to teach her all she could about the forest, the elementals, and that which made them all so beautiful. It was through her meetings with her new Sylvan friend, whom she made time to sneak away from her compound just to see, that Oko would discover an innate talent for healing; at first, via her own hands, a remedial physicker, then with a crude semblance of a staff to borrow from the elements - though it was never particularly strong, it was certainly a start. Over the years, Oko would practice healing with both her own aether, and that of what is provided by Hyaedalyn and the Elementals.

Then came the Calamity. Despite the devastation wreaked across the realm, Oko’s family would remain thankfully intact, with no casualties besides perhaps destruction of homes that need be rebuilt. And they would be. What did happen, however, was the forest stopped providing so generously, in what her clan could only assume was its desire to rebuild as well - but it grew frustrations like weeds, with Wood Wailers patrolling more often, stricter regulations imposed upon their hunts, and food in general became more scarce, and more dangerous. All of these sorts of things began to drill further holes into the validity of Usei as the Matriarch - which ultimately came to a head when, after the first year subsequent the event, she made the decision to move her and her youngest children (being Oko and Usei’to,) into the city of Gridania. This was one unfathomable to her family, her eldest sister Llythe, with the backup of others from her clan, stripping her of the title and taking it on for herself. To make matters worse, the move into the city was rough, in which the Miqo’te were scarcely the only to come forth from the forests in search of better life, but were also rather unwelcome - but not denied. Karo’sae and Nheya’to remained in the Twelveswood with the clan, because they felt it was their duty to remain as such, but never lost sight of their care for their clan members who had moved into the city. Disappointed by the decision, but unwilling to cut ties - especially seeing as Karo’sae had a child there. They would visit in order to help Usei transition to city life, and to bring excess food and furs from the forests.

During the next year, Oko and her family worked to build good standing within the society they'd moved themselves into, a stark change from the quiet life they lived in the Shroud. It proved difficult, as aside from her mother's knowledge and communication skills, most Gridanians viewed her children as uncivilized mongrels, and treated them poorly when Usei was not around to combat it. This is when Oko would develop her anxieties, as well as work herself to the bone to meet the expectations of those around her.

Oko, some time after the Calamity, would join the Conjurer's Guild, utilizing her natural connection to the aether and the forests. At first, she struggled to perform her basic tasks, as before it would come naturally only when it was needed, and she floundered specifically with the offensive aspects of white magic, but in time she would prove to be incredibly good with it, bordering on masterful. However, she has what began as a minor grievance that has long since blossomed into something not unlike disgust for the Guild itself, and their preachings, and how they refuse to heal or care for anyone despite them seriously needing it, under fear of the elementals. While she knows that the elements are nothing to be taken lightly, she does not believe in ignoring the masses. She continues to call herself a conjurer, but has been toying with the idea of leaving it behind, refusing to be a part of something that turns a blind eye to its ailing citizens.

Third-year post Calamity would yield Oko losing a family member. Usei'a and Jeiha, out on a hunt where they ought not have been hunting, were cornered by Wood Wailers who had mistaken them for Couerlclaws, They ran, but Jeiha was taken out by an archer, and her brother hadn't the time to rescue her. The Wailers left her body, and it wasn't until much later they were able to retrieve it, to give her a proper burial. Oko was devastated, but took it as a sign that staying in Gridania would be no good for her, seeing as her mother struggled to feed both her and her brother. She had no place among the Gridanians, and wanting to live the stories they told her when she was young, and wanting to make her own, Oko departed Gridania once of sufficient mastery, in search of the world.

She still visits, every so often, with tales to tell her family, and gifts to give. She cares deeply for her family, and by extension Gridania, though she's never quite felt herself part of the country.

current history

Once evening, around a cycle ago, Oko got word from her mother that her little brother had been injured by Ixali when he was on a walk with his father in the forests. Karo'sae brought him home in a rush, wherein afterwards he and Usei pled with the Conjurer's Guild to heal him, for he had been stricken with a malady brought on by one of the beast men's thaumaturge, whom denied them this, saying the elementals have said that he shall not be healed.

Upon Oko's return, she would petition them as well, offering so much as to do it herself, but was met with yet again more denial, and a set of repercussions were installed should she attempt to do it without their say so. She has grown frustrated beyond repair with the Guild, and her brother grows ever weaker - coming from a family which does not accept help from outside sources (for pride alone) Oko has taken it upon herself to discover proper ways by which to heal her brother - which currently manifests itself in hope to learn Arcanima and bend it to her will for healing, something which is being taught to her by Upa Zuvhe in sparing lessons, between which she fills with her own studies. It has proved rocky, but she is picking it up fast enough thanks to her natural inclination towards magic, and to healing.

For several moons, Oko worked for a company known as Soul of the Sword - in which she would meet her best friend Sarantuya Avagnar as well as P'rth Makeo, both individuals who have shaped her current life and personality to a great extent. With them Oko went on various adventures, such as facing the mighty Leviathan (not defeating, but running from, rather,) saving kidnapped children, and apprehending criminals - all including encounters which served to heavily stress Oko out to the point of needing to leave the company, the culminating point having been an injury which Sarantuya sustained that the Miqo'te could not properly care for, as she is only an aether healer and not a true medic, which resulted in her prompt resignation, for fear of having to witness such things again.

Now she is on her own once more, in search of a proper place to call home, as well as to conclude her studies (of Arcanima and beyond,) and find something by which to heal her younger brother, and to further her own fulfillment as a person.

Usei Kaprei ( ) ( NPC ) - The True Matriarch
Oko's dearest mother, whom she would follow to the ends - even should that result in her being cast aside by her own clan. While she was still young when she left the clan at her mother's side, she knew full well the implications of moving into the city with her, but with the immense respect she held for the Matriarch there was no way she'd leave her to do it by herself. Usei has worked incredibly hard to provide for her children, both as a clan leader (which she is no longer) and as a mother, and has shown Oko was true strength is. She would do anything for her. Currently she hunts a few times a week in order to help provide her with food while she takes care of her youngest son, Usei'to.
Usei'to Kaprei ( ) ( NPC ) - The Little Brother
Oko's youngest sibling, and currently the last child of Usei Kaprei - born just before the woman's title was stripped from her. He's incredibly sweet for a boy, and having grown up in a far less traditional setting, isn't quite as reserved or standoffish as others of his kind. Still, he respects his mother and sister greatly. Despite being currently incapacitated by vile ixali magicks, he still mantains a positive outlook - for which Oko draws a sense of strength. Everything she does currently is for his sake, and wants only to see him happy.
Jeiha Kaprei ( ) ( NPC ) - The Role Model
Aside from Usei, Oko has only ever had one other true role model in her life - that being her elder by only two years, Jeiha. The two of them did nigh everything together, from hunting, to learning how to ride chocobos. Though only two years older, Oko found that her sister had a level of grace in her movements that she'd only ever hope to achieve. She was one of the only few who didn't condemn Oko and her mother for leaving the compound, and kept in touch right up until her death. Oko misses her dearly, every day.
Jurna'li Moshantu ( ) ( NPC ) - The Dear Father
Jurna'li was a Miqo'te of another clan, whom fell as closely in love with the Matriarch of the Kapreis as one could. With her, the two would have four children - Llythe, being her first, and then three subsequent girls upon their later get togethers. Oko would be the last child they had together, and he would adore her like no other. She was his sunshine, and he taught her most everything she knows about hunting, and carving. When he died, Oko felt a heavy weight, having been the one to witness it. Memories are blurry, however, and she wonders... what really happened.
Llythe Kaprei ( ) ( NPC ) - The Eldest
Oko's oldest sister. Despite growing up relatively well liked by her, the girl was quick to dismiss any notion of Oko as family when she decided to follow her mother out of the Twelveswood. Oko still loves her, and holds many memories dear still, and truly wishes that - even though they have clear differences in their personalities and clash heads - one day they might put their problems to rest and accept one another. After all, if Oko ever wants to return to her clan, they'll have to.
Sarantuya Avagnar ( ) - Silly Girl
Oko met Sarantuya shortly after she joined the Soul of the Sword - and took to her as quickly as she could. At first they didn't spend incredible amounts of time together, but Oko found everything she did charming and fun. Upon the death of a mutual friend, the two became even closer, and now are best friends, despite tumultuous times separating them. Oko cares deeply for the Au Ra, and wants nothing more than the make her happy. They are slight roommates, with the Keeper spending more and more time staying at her home to keep an eye on her.

friends & other

Ala'li Mhowa ( ) - Reminders of Home
An incredibly traditional Keeper male that makes her homesick. Every conversation she has with Ala'li has her itching for simpler times, when she still danced under Menphina's light for the beauty of it, and when things were simpler. She likes him for this sense of nostalgia, but also finds herself sad by the end of every meeting.
P'rth Makeo ( ) - A Good Man
Having met this man through her free company, she at first thought of him a mirror image of Gira'to - kind and funny, perhaps someone who yearned to be as young as his heart wished, and it helped her to grow close to him. Over time, her feelings have tended to fluctuate; she is completely unsure how she feels about the man. Attraction? Adoration? Love? Is it romantic, or platonic? Nothing makes sense to her, and it leaves her feeling confused. However, she knows for certain that she cannot be with him, truly, the way either of them want. And it leaves her sorrowful.
L'veyu Carrin ( ) - The Wolf
L'veyu is a curious man, a half-breed with apparent violent tendencies, but a soft personality. She came across him wounded in the Shroud, and took care of his wounds - and thusly began a brief romantic stint with him. It didn't get very far, with the two deciding they were better off friends, but she does care for him quite a lot, and has been sort of looking out for him ever since.
Upa Zuvhe ( ) - The Lovely Mentor
Upon deciding to branch out from conjury, Oko responded to a poster found in Limsa Lominsa advertising a teacher in search of students. It led her to Upa, a lovely woman with many similarities to Oko that led her to very quickly develop a kinship with her. Thus far their lessons have been informative and wonderful, bringing the Keeper a semblance of hope as to curing her brother's ailments - and outside of the lessons, Oko has come to consider (or hope to consider) the woman as a dear friend.
Wyra Nimh ( ) - Awkward, But Kind
Met during a lesson with Upa, Wyra is a curious woman. Oko finds it simultaneously easy, and yet difficult, to hold proper conversation with her (like due to her incredible vocabulary, which leaves the poor girl confused more oft than not,) but likes her all the same. Though she doesn't know her all that well, after having a pleasant time with her and sharing some treats, Oko hopes they'll get to know one another better, as it would seem they have more in common than they realize.
Suko'to Nbolo ( (?) ) - Where Have You Gone?
One of the first people Oko met prior to leaving Gridania, Suko'to was a strange man. He had secrets that even he didn't understand, and felt and wondered things Oko never could've fathomed - and it drew her to him. In her efforts to help him, to bring him closer to a semblance of who he wanted to be, or who he was, she fell for him. They became very close, and yet... it was not meant to be. Were things different, maybe they could've been together. But now, she hasn't seen him in moons, and she wonders what has become of him. Still, she thinks of him fondly.
when roleplaying with me

I am a Medium to Heavy Roleplayer and I live in the Pacific Standard Zone (PST). After noon is the best time to get a hold of me, though there's never really telling when I'll be online, truth be told. If you need to contact me please do so at my tumblr blog [kapreisun]! Most often I roleplay in general chat, almost exclusively with the /em chat option, but at times with /say. Other options are fine, that's just my usual form of RP! I do best in one on one or small groups; big ones tend to scare me, but I try!

I roleplay many themes, be it dark or lighthearted, and I would love to be included in plotlines and stories! If you think it's too heavy or can result in my character becoming seriously injured or incapacitated in any way, please make sure to bring it up and discuss it with me before hand rather than just having it happen in roleplay.

Please remember that IC AND OOC are two separate things! My character's views do not always reflect my own (though most often they do because Oko is a sweet baby girl but you know! DISCLAIMER and all that to be safe!) If my character hates yours, I don't hate you! If my character is in a relationship with yours, I can guarantee I am not searching for the same as I am happily married outside of the game!

Lastly, do not roleplay with me ONLY for the sake of looking for romance. I don't like that. If a relationship happens, it happens organically, not because we're pushing for it. Feelings and tension are okay, fine and dandy even! But don't expect romantic RP to be something I do constantly, or with anyone. Thanks!
