Character
General
Satomi is a young, Hyur, Half-Doman woman with boundless intellect who seems to live her life simply for the pursuit of knowledge, missing out on the simpler pleasures for her endless goals. She has a good heart for others around her, and the tenacity to never give up, but is naive to understanding people as a whole. The young woman is a hard worker, one who rarely sets foot out doors, and who has little appreciation for nonsense or stupidity. One can even say she is rather altruistic with how she work so hard for the benefit of science and others, with so little care of her own well being. In short, Satomi is the sort of woman who has all of the answers, ...until it comes to dealing with people.
Appearance
At first glance, Satomi would seem like a pretty short and frail girl, almost vulnerable looking in a way, like she doesn't go outdoors much. Her pale skin may show this, soft and light as a budding pink rose, but upon a closer look, her fingers are calloused, she's often covered in patches of oil, dirt, or sweat from her work, or the occasional few cuts and wounds she doesn't get the chance to take care of.
Satomi is a little short, barely three inches over five feet, and hardly sees the sun since she’s indoors researcher, but she is a mature young woman, even if many look at her as more of a girl from her rather lacking features, small chest size, and not at all impressive figure. Her eyes from behind her glasses are an emerald green, and often with a sharp gaze, while her lips are thin, lightly pink, and usually pursed close in a simple, straight fashion that shows an unamused look on her. The girl's hair is black and just past shoulder length. Though normally, she has it tied back in two pig tails with braids, sometimes showing a bit of her forehead and her ears.
Fashion
A word that Satomi knows little about, the girl prefers comfort over appearance. And most of the time, she is seen wearing her lab coat, coming out from her work with it on, and simply not taking it off. In a way, she's made her long, pale blue lab coat a part of her normal fashion. While from the waist down, she's normally wearing a skirt, about knee length, with high socks. It's worth noting that her skirt is often wrinkled, ad one socks tends to be lower than the other from neglect of keeping them pulled up. While her shoes range to whatever seems best, from boots to simple dress shoes, again it's a matter of comfort and necessity.
However, one that that never changes with what she wears is the glasses. While she has two pairs, she's never seen without one of the two on, the girl too poorly sited to go without glasses. In the Ironworks facility, she also wears goggles, having them fit in a way that goes over her thin shaped, oval glasses.
When more relaxed and not wearing her coat though, she does have a few nice shirts, but still goes with a skirt, and has a larger pair of glasses she wears in paranoia of wanting to keep her eyes protected, figuring the larger ones work as a better shield over her eyes. She does accidently tend to leave her work pouch or tool belt on though during the process of 'dressing casual' as if she just refuses to leave her work behind completely. Though there's no denying that it seems fitting for such a busy and studious young woman like her.
Behavior
From the start, anyone can tell that Satomi is an eccentric girl with a thirst for knowledge, inside and out. Satomi takes everything from an analytical point of view, seeing everything through cold, stated numbers instead of witnessing the emotional or fun value to something. People see her to be a mad scientist type of girl, as she often dehumanizes most things around her, and will even go onto rants about anything she can’t explain scientifically.
In a fight though, Satomi changes quite a bit. Needing to clear her mind for her style to work, Satomi becomes a truly focused fighter, determining her foes attacks in mid strike and blocking, but doing so in the manner that makes a silent but deadly assassin look like a common criminal. Blunt and cold like a steel knife, Satomi, once her life is threatened, is a surprisingly chilling and intimidating opponent.
Around that though, if anyone was to take the time to understand Satomi, they would see that she really is just a normal, young woman, trying to make a living, just going about it in the wrong ways as her pursuit of knowledge makes her irrational. When she meets someone she likes, she’s not afraid to befriend someone, though her somewhat hermit like lifestyle can cause a problem with that and makes her stutter and easily nervous. Not to mention despite her intellectual prowess, she is a bit socially inept, sometimes shy to new things and people. Still, she makes sure to take everything as it comes. And in the end, Satomi may be a girl who quite literally is in love with science, but she can also be caring and compassionate, even putting her friends above herself far too often, even if it means hurting herself.
Occupation
As of currently, Satomi on occasion ends up assisting the Garlond Ironworks Facility, specializing in the application of ceruleum's uses, and Magitek weaponry. While she hasn't dabbled much with her coworkers, and tends to simply go in, do her job quietly and efficiently, then leave, Satomi's been able to make quite a name for herself, and provides a strong boost in their work force.
For most of her work though she has independent contracts from several Eorzeon militia forces to supply the troops. Sometimes it's dozens of Ice Ward potions for the guards of Coerthas Central Highlands. Or other times it's Ether's for the Thaumaturge guild in Ul'dah. Or other times, it's even healing potions ranging from simple, to the X-potency to Brass Blades, Wood Wailers or Yellowjackets. Whatever it may be, she's contacted through her Mammets, given orders, and often spends the night creating them before making the delivery the next morning, or hiring Sheena L'aveene to make the delivery for her.
Due to all of this, Satomi is actually quite wealthy, often just hoarding her money for now, as if she has a very important reason to use it in the near future.
Combat
Satomi isn't afraid to fight, but she keeps herself at a distance, both physically, and mentally. She dabbles a bit in scholarly magick, but mostly to keep wounds healed, or her traveling partner, Grundy, alive. For the most part, she's only in a fight for supplies, or if ambushed, or simply defending herself from danger. And when she is, the scientist is not afraid to draw her flintlock pistol, and put a hole in someone. While she detests the idea of having to kill someone or something, she simply ends up taking her mind away from that fact of the fight, and possess a mean snap-fire with amazing accuracy, making herself heartless when the fight occurs so she doesn't hesitate.
To her, if someone tries to hurt her, then she knows they've already figured the risk, and were prepared to die. For supplies and needing to gain something from the wild, she tries not to be wasteful, and considers it all the cycle of life. While she uses a bullet to solve the problem, or launches a chemical concoction at her foe to poison or blind them, the woman prefers to use her knowledge any way she can to win the fight. That is of course, while always hiding behind someone else to keep her protected.
Her Mammet assistants
Satomi's small brigade of mammets each come with their own specialized use. And while she has seven by now, and names then by their number, each one is usually left with specific tasks, and seen in certain areas. The list of her mammets are as followed.
One (Violet): Her assistant in the lab, One is seen inside the Vylbrand Academy, almost strictly in her lab. When she isn't around and others wish to use her lab, it remains, watching over and assisting. When the lab is ventilating and none are allowed to come in due to hazardous chemicals, it will promptly keep anyone away from going inside. And most of all, when Satomi is there, it will hand her the right tools she asks for or whatever ingredients that lie around, basically being the one who fetches everything she needs. It speaks with a surprisingly calm, gentle, and assistive manner like a servant happy to help.
Two (Red): -CURRENTLY GOING THROUGH REPAIRS-
Three (Orange): Three's job is quite simple. Cleanliness. Whether it's helping to wash her cloths -usually her labcoats- or cleaning chemical spills off the floor, Three is left to always pick up after the scientist. Sometimes it's after a bad lab accident where Satomi works alongside the mammet, othertimes she might just forget something or make a small mess without realizing it, which he silently cleans. Three speaks in a very quiet, almost nervous sort of tone, like he fears displeasing Satomi, even if that's something it should never worry about.
Four (Green): This particular mammet has the unfortunate job of watching over Grundy. Satomi isn't always around to care for him, and while Grundy always means well, he has been known to cause a lot of damage without trying. So, this mammet often lies hidden, but watches over Grundy. And when things go bad, Satomi is quickly alerted so she could rush over to Grundy and try to calm him. Fortunately, this happens rarely.
Five (Yellow): Her combat analyzer, Five is there to record 'battle data' as she calls it, and recall events that happened in a battle. Usually, she uses it to study other members of the Vylbrand Academy to learn of their skillsets, and makes comparisons between others, or listing new techniques for future strategies. It speaks in a rather monotone and computer like fashion.
Six (White): This mammet is most often sent out on fetching small items for her. Whether it's going to a local market, handing over gil and a list to the proper shop-keep and then returning with a few goods, or simply going to the house of an FC or someone she needs to give them a letter. Six is very reliable, and barely gets the chance to be around it's master, almost always sent out on some sort of task.
Seven (blue): Her most commonly seen Mammet, Seven carries around all of Satomi's linkpearls, as she has quite a few from her many customers. When she isn't available for her own linkpearl, the mammet will hand it to someone else to take a message, or simply keep record for Satomi of who was trying to get in touch with her. As well, it provides the basic functions most mammets do, and while silent, she seems to find the most comfort from it.
Tendencies
Likes
- Pursuing greater knowledge, especially in the understanding of alchemy and Magitek
- Reading books, though only ones she feels she can pick up a lesson from.
- Creating something, or even taking something apart, whether it be for work, or understanding.
- Seeing others teach or classes learn. It gives her hope for future society.
- Being thrown off guard. Call it a guilty pleasure, but she actually likes the challenge of trying to understand someone who makes a weird impression.
Dislikes
- Sheer stupidity and people who refuse to learn. It's okay if you don't know something, but don't try to remain blind.
- Anything that she cant explain scientifically or through aethereal theory.
- Prostitutes, whores, or people who sell their body for services. Though she's learning to see the reasons for his, and starting to cease in judging it so harshly.
- Contact with others. It takes her a very long time to feel comfortable with even a pat on the shoulder from someone, let alone a sudden embrace or something like that.
- Seafood! Even though she's Doman blooded, she wasn't raised in Doma, and never was raised off any marine life. In fact, she's barely ever tried it, and the few times she has, it's made her stomach ache.
- Tribal folks who refuse to adapt even the slightest.
Hobbies/Talents
- The understanding of Magitek, as Satomi's not only a natural and long practiced it, but people see her as a bit of a wizard with the arts.
- Alchemy. If you need a potion created, Satomi's likely your best bet on who to talk to. She enjoys it, and naturally can concoct almost any mixture needed with the best of quality.
- Cooking, as she actually views it much like alchemy. Only instead of chemicals, it's mixing ingredients. Though sadly, it tends to always miss out on the 'motherly touch' since she's so by the book with it, and isn't that very good. It's a hobby she still enjoys though!
- The Piano, and she's quite a talented player, even if most of her music sounds rather melancholy.
- Airships, both tinkering them, and piloting them.
- Firearms. She's quite skilled with a flintlock pistol, and likes to tinker with it.
- Astrology and Geography, just understanding the outside world from the safety of being inside.
Facts
- Satomi has a squad of Mammets who assist her, each designated with numbers. Her most commonly used one is 'Seven' who carries nearly a dozen linkpearls for her. The linkpearls are all belonging to customers who require her alchemical talents to create them potions. Most often, she makes delivers to the guards in Coerthas Central Highlands with potions to heal wounds, and the best quality Ice-Ward potions to help with the cold.
- Satomi always wears her hair in twin, braided pigtails. Ever since she got her hair caught in a cog, she started to have it tied back like it is now out of fear of it happening again.
- Satomi treats herself as a scientist before being seen as a woman. Thus, she's actually very naive to relationships or even friendship in general, but aware of this fact.
History/Timeline
Early Life
(Birth to 19 years - The events of Satomi's upbringing)
Show text
Satomi was born from a rather odd couple under just as abnormal circumstances. Her mother being a traveling researcher who visited many lands, and her father being a Doman [Samurai], it was an odd match, and one never meant to last. Her mother knew the Samurai for only a few days, hiring him as a guardian to keep her protected as she gathered foreign herbs to supply her studies, but in their time working together, they had a romantic evening, causing Satomi's birth nine months later. This made Satomi's a single child, as her mother did not stay with the Samurai, and had not even planned for the pregnancy, only learning about it when she returned back to Eorzea.
Fortunately for Satomi, her mother had a safe birth, and while alone she still managed to take pretty good care of her child. And while 'love' was only there to a very faint degree, the mother and child having a distant relationship, there was never any animosity. Satomi grew up following her mothers footsteps, learning from what she did, and having little exposure to the outside world. In a way, she was her mothers shadow, hardly bothered by the lack of a father figure one bit, and saw her mother more like a teacher, rather than family. It was safe to say that 'family' in general was a word rather foreign to her. And with Satomi's rather sheltered upbringing, 'friends' felt just as strange. Though, she hasn't spoken much of it, the girl has hinted that perhaps her mother was a little abusive too. Forced to study for days on end. Never able to truly appease her mother with all the work and effort she put in, and being forced to always work as hard as possible if only so she could become a scientist as skiled as her mother.
She was a quiet girl, obsessed with learning, taking apart the toys her mother bought her, only to put them back together. Socially she had trouble, and was bullied often, causing her to always retreat to her books and learning more, but she didn't just focus on tinkering. In fact, just about anything she could learn caught her interest. From biology to cooking, she embraced knowledge all the same. Fortunately, Satomi's upbringing was rather uneventful, if not unorthodox, and there were many nights she would spend watching her mother work, perfectly content with learning off her as the older woman created potions, dabbled with magitek, and always did her best to invent new weapons or even household aiding equipment. And for Satomi, the half-Doman girl enjoyed every bit of it~
After the Calamity
(Around the time of the Calamity - And how Satomi's life shifted from the Calamity)
Show text
Satomi had only moved out from her mother only two months before the Calamity happened. And while it wasn't something they were in tears about when Satomi moved, it was a respected decision, and her mother was proud, even if she hadn't showed it. Once again, their relationship was something more professional rather than like family, but there was unspoken love there.
However, when Satomi had moved herself to Limsa Lominsa to work in the alchemy branch there when her talents were realizes (and she rejected working in Ul'dah's main branch), the Calamity had done some real damage to her life. Not to her physically, but she lost her mother, and only then did it really strike the young woman how much of an impact she had on her life. Of course, she wasn't the only one to lose someone, as countless families were misplaced and lost loved ones, but this was one of the only people she cared about, so it shook her pretty hard when it first happened.
And so, she took up her mothers work after a little bit of time to get over the loss. The woman was nearly forgotten so fast, with so few to mourn her, that Satomi wanted to keep her name alive. Even if she could only do so through recreating her work. And while it also helped Satomi to make a living, rapidly gaining a name for herself as her alchemical and Magitek creations aided wounded civilians and soldiers alike, it also gave her life more meaning. It motivated her to never let up, and soon, Satomi felt like this was her real calling in life.
Garleans & Grundy
(The last five years after the Calamity and living on the trail)
Show text
In the time when she was starting to make a good profit off her alchemical studies, Garlemald had made it's invasion known after the Calamity. Upon seeing Magitek used to such a frightening degree had quickly put Satomi's desires and research in a different spectrum. Simply put, she saw it as a challenge and an arms race. She didn't give up on alchemy completely, rather she had expanded herself, and found her desires shifting more strongly into Magitek, and in particular the weaponry. In started as a desire and a challenge, before eventually becoming a full blown obsession.
She dabbled in handling a rifle both to protect herself, and since it always made her think of technology mixed with weaponry as a perfect blend. She focused more upon the weaponry side of Magitek. And she studied Garlemald tactics, getting obsessed to the point that it made some suspect her, and she had to keep her work a bit more private.
During this time though, somewhere among all of her obsessive studies, hours of work and research, and her trips out into the dangerous wilderness to gather supplies, Satomi had a fateful encounter in Costa Del Sol. Traversing the more hazardous parts of the coast line, going where few dared far past the safer resort area by many miles, Satomi had been gathering some supplies for her work, also hearing word of wreckage from a Garlemald scout ship having washed ashore, and wanting to get there first. Sadly, the rumor was just that, a rumor and the foul weather made her supply run yield few results.
That wasn't the half of it though, as a massive [crustacean] far bigger than any other of it's kind had attacked Satomi. Vicious as it was, Satomi tried to defend herself, but her flintlock rifle did her no good, the shell too thick for her to penetrate with any ammunition, and having no explosive potions or corrosive concoctions on her at the time. Ill prepared and fighting for her life, it was then that Grundy Byrde had emerged and aided her, slaying the massive Megalocrab with his own hands, the bloodthirsty and primitive Roegadynn overpowering the creature in a most brutal fashion.
Feeling that her life was in debt, Satomi tried to speak to the Roegadynn when the battle was over, but it became quickly apparent that not only was he not even remotely intelligent by any means, but he had been dwelling in the cave not far from where the battle took place, and had come out to her aid when he heard her scream. After a long and difficult to understand conversation, Satomi had taken Grundy along with her, hoping to educate the Roegadynn, but also seeing him as beneficial from his strength. And overtime, she almost became like a mother to the gentle hearted giant. From then on, the two were traveling partners. ...Even if she often finds herself scolding him for his reckless and childish behavior.

From this point on, Satomi had been traveling even more now that she had Grundy at her side. She became well acquainted with almost all of Eorzea, and her work was starting to pick up even further. In fact, her genius was luckily even spotted by The Garlond Ironworks, where Satomi was able to quickly prove she had what it took to aid them, especially in the area of Magitek weaponry. She became fascinated with all of the information at her fingertips, even wishing to work closer and closer by Garlean territory, actually enjoying the thrill and the risk. While others feared the arrival of the Ultima Weapon, Satomi seemed to only grow more interested and obsessed over creating something even better than it. In fact, to this day, even as the Garlean forces are dwindling and the Ultima Weapon was defeated by the Warriors of Light, Satomi finds herself wanting to create something even more powerful than it, a weapon to defend Eorzea, even if it's power is beyond terrifying.
Fortunately, while her work was most respected and appreciated in the Ironworks, she was given some leave time after four months there, due to the concerns of Satomi perhaps going over the edge and losing herself to her research. And while she may not have liked it, others realized it was for her own good, nearly forcing the young, half-Doman researcher to take some time off and even socialize with others.
And it was here that during her awkward attempts to learn how to be more social that she met members of the Vylbrand Academy (USH). While her employment with the Garlond Ironworks remained true, Satomi found herself growing intrigued with the Free Company, finding it helping to calm her restless craving for knowledge and frighteningly destructive weaponry. Even she figured it was just what she had needed. And so, with several encounters, and even Grundy's approval who she always tried to consider, the young researcher found herself working there when she can, even if most of the time she's back at the Garlond Ironworks, or running orders for the many militias of Eorzea.
Science, progress, and uncertainty
(Feb 2015 - Mar 2015 - Friends come and go, emotions grown, and Satomi starts to finally realize what it means to be a person)
Show text
After some time in the Vylbrand Academy, Satomi's found herself making a name there, and has become a respected member. Though not a teacher or student, she's assisted everyone she possibly could at the estate, and can honestly admit she's happy. For starters, contraire to how she likes to keep people at a distance, Satomi has been making friends, even finding some comfort in it. And her talents have been relied on heavily time and time again among the members, even from the headmaster Elisea Renyven herself. And while seeing old faces like Sypher Corinth, nearly losing friends like Sheena L'aveene who went missing for some time and was captured by Garleans, or other friends parting ways such as Auriaune Fournier all may have made her start questioning what friendship really means in the first place, it has also lead into her getting distracted from her work. One could say she was slipping even.
Slipping enough that it lead to her room in the Vylbrand Academy exploding with her last experiment, and even nearly losing her life from the incident. The girl was starting to doubt herself, questioning why she allows these distractions, and attempting to close herself off more, even distancing herself from Grundy of all people. The friends she were making had quickly become a distraction she couldn't allow, or at least it was what she told herself. However, without a room, one of the members had given her shelter in their own room, which gave her time to think. And in her time staying in Kyrrae Liminia's room while her own was being rebuilt, the lalafell had started to open her eyes a little. He explained to her how friendship truly wasn't as bad of a thing as she had thought, and started to show her that there were good people in this world she could trust, and she needed to open her heart. The lost feelings in her started to fade, and instead, she was finding out that maybe it was okay to treat herself like a person, and to try and accept herself as a whole rather than just be someone who should live solely for science.
Her work would continue. The lab was rebuilt, she had started to attempt in making friends again and treating herself more as a person, and the girl even attended her first wedding and celebrated her first holiday. But in this time, there was someone she kept coming back to. Kyrrae was constantly checking up on her, as was she spending more and more time in his room. Something about him made her feel a comfort and warmth she wasn't used to before, feeling more like a person than a soul lost to science. And after several weeks, and a rather awkward but lovely conversations between the two, they had decided to take things slow and steady. Both do not truly know what could become of this, but they are willing to try it. In Satomi's heart, it's something she never dreamed possible, but the whole idea has made her happier than she ever thought possible. One could say it's the first time she's genuinely smiled for something other than her research.
It was also in this time that Satomi had met Chao Lingshen, a Miqo'te employee for the Garlond Ironworks who Satomi found herself quite intrigued by. Call it a hunch, but seeing her in the Quicksand, Satomi couldn't take her eyes off the Miqo'te, feeling like there was something oddly familiar with her. Despite not being one to approach others or enjoy social moments, or how much Satomi despised being in the Quicksand and was only there to deliver her orders or find someone who can take a job, Satomi this time felt like she had discovered something worth her while.
After an exchanging of words, she learned of the Miqo'te's work, and that the two shared a similar interest in their fields of science. For the first time, Satomi felt like she was talking to someone on her own intellectual level, someone who understood everything she said, and she could honestly enjoy fully just talking to and could discuss theories with. The meeting was short lived, but they would trade link pearls and promise to meet again, Satomi even once or twice sneaking into the department Chao worked in at the Garlond Ironworks just to say hi.

For the next few weeks in Satomi's life, things had begun to calm down. Sheena had returned safely, the academy seemed more peaceful, her lab was completely rebuilt and met all of her specifications quite nicely, and Grundy had been learning plenty which always made her proud as his caretaker. Most of all though, her relationship with Kyrrae Liminia was blooming. The young scientist never really thought that she'd find love in a person, claiming her heart and soul to the pursuit of knowledge, however Kyrrae had begun unlocking the key in her heart that she couldn't quite understand. The feeling of love was new to her, the girl practically blind to the whole thing, but she gave it her all with Kyrrae, the two growing happier together day by day.
He had gotten a house in the Lavender Beds, something that Satomi wanted to help with. Whether it was maintenance, furnishings, or just cooking for him, Satomi started to try and live a more normal life when she wasn't working. It started to become a strange routine for her really. She'd spend countless hours in her lab, loving every moment of her work, researching without any signs of stopping, and fulfilling many orders of the alchemical variety for her customers. Then, she'd drop such a persona in minutes when she got to see Kyrrae, acting more like your normal, cheerful and calm young woman without a hint of her usual nervousness, or losing herself to complicated equations and theories. It was her first step to becoming a normal person, and not a slave to science.
Though, not everything could go perfectly in her life, as one of Satomi's friends had gone missing, and it shifted her attention. Sypher Corinth was usually taking Satomi's most dangerous supply missions, and when she had sent him to Coerthas, he hadn't returned for several days. Wanting to find him, she hired an informant to find a lead on him. Hiring a detective, Plainsfolk lalafell named Zoey Holendoey, the to would search out for any clues of Sypher, until soon they started to find wanted bounties for him. Sypher was listed as wanted dead or alive for four murders in Coerthas, and had gone missing since.
Forming an idea together, Satomi and Zoey would do everything in their power to revoke the bounty and change it to something far less suspect, instead wanting him for a 'debt' where clearly one would only want him alive. Sypher was still being hunted for, but they knew they'd at least save him the trouble of having to outrun any bloodthirsty bounty hunters. With Zoey finding Chao Lingshen of all people to help, as she was apparently a bounty hunter herself, they would search high and low for Sypher, running on few leads.
Fortune would strike though, as Zoey had found a lead and managed to get a hold of Sypher through a Miqo'te woman named X'ami Tyata, and Sypher would be returned to the Vylbrand Academy. Though, his trial would soon start, both Zoey and Satomi left to help defend his case now. One thing lead to another, and after a tearful reuniting, and Sypher far too wounded -though recovering- from his wounds, they would soon learn the Miqo'te was not a murderer by choice, but the four he slew were in self defense. It didn't stop there either, as one of the four slain happened to be a pupil of Zoey, which the lalafell knew beforehand and was a very big reason to why she took the case. They would find that Sypher defended himself from heretics then, sympathizers and followers to [Lady Iceheart]. It was a shock to Zoey to learn her pupil was a heretic, and Satomi was still relieved and even tearful just to have Sypher back. Needless to say, the group needed a break and time to prepare for Sypher's court date.
Fortunately, while difficult, and even with Zoey herself not being welcomed in the academy due to other recent, suspicious events which made things more difficult, the group would manage to get Sypher a claim of innocence and released from all charges. Though now, that's left him needing to lie low and stay cautious, since the families of the four deceased still hold quite the grudge. The only good thing that Satomi was able to find of this all so far were friendships. For one, Zoey has become someone Satomi still talks to outside of work, the lalafell even giving her a few tips to her appearance and buying her an outfit, the two even sharing coffee a few times and having small talk. And second was how once Satomi learned that Chao was on the case too, the two of them managed to catch up, their talk starting off about the case and Sypher's bounty, to ending up in babble about their scientific research that would have gone on for ages had their time not run short.

It wasn't long before Satomi's life started to spiral out of control with one event after another in her life. At first, it all started with a simple letter, and her friend Chao making a disappearance. Satomi didn't know what to do at first, but when the letter spoke of how Garlean were after Chao, and that she needed to remain in hiding so others were not put at risk, Satomi eventually decided to try and find her. She didn't have any leads, and the girl had no idea where to start, but she asked around everywhere she could, even hiring Zoey to help find her.
Unfortunately, it was the Garleans who found her, as several Garlean assassins was sent after several targets who were linked to Chao or had ex-allegiance with the Empire, and Satomi was one of the targets due to how much of their research she stole and even sabotaged over the years. It was during a quiet night searching for a few alchemical ingredients in Southern La Noscea when Satomi was attacked, and nearly lost her life from the assassin. However, with her sharp senses, sheer luck, and the girl never leaving anywhere without her flintlock pistol, Satomi managed to incapacitate the attacker. And after what was nothing short of torture, practically dissecting the assassin, Satomi managed to get a small list of names who were other targets, before finally she put him out of her misery.
It was a side of Satomi she wished she never discovered, but the girl would soon continue her hunt, tracking down the names one by one to warn those who were also targets. She would eventually tell her lover, Kyrrae about her situation, and he too would accompany Satomi in her search, as they'd find the people who were targeted. Some didn't beleive Satomi, some already knew and made their leave, a few were unfortunately too late and already dead, but some would lend Satomi an ear and take her warning fairly. However, it still left Chao's location a mystery, who Satomi was hoping to find more than anyone.
The search often ended with Satomi spending the days looking, and then staying in shelter and hiding at Kyrrae's over the night. And while she continued her work when she could, Satomi was fortunate enough that she found a lead in one of her old own places of employment, the Garlond Ironworks. There she had learned of where Chao was last seen, and after a long search through the night in Mor Dhona's dangerous lands, she had found Chao, both Satomi and Kyrrae arriving in time to see Chao destroying some of her past work.
It was a tense atmosphere, but after Satomi explained to Chao how people were involved now, herself included, and lives were at stake, she had managed to convinced Chao to step out of hiding, and for them to work together in getting the Garlean forces off their back. After a long talk, and even ending in a quick embrace, the two girls were reminded as to why they were scientists in the first place, and agreed to partner up. There, for the time being, they'd take shelter at Kyrrae's and the Vylbrand academy.
For Satomi though, it wasn't over, and the stress would start to build. Staying in hiding like this left the girl unable to work, and without being able to dabble in her alchemy or other sciences, she felt uncomfortable. Then there was the constant paranoia of Garlean assassins, always needing to watch her back. Later, she had Grundy even beginning to notice something was wrong, and he tried to pry, Satomi feeling awful about pushing him away, putting their time together on hold, and basically lying to him. Even Sypher went missing for his second time, while another person who was a close friend to Satomi had gone missing, while a third ended up badly wounded. Coupling this all together, and the girl started to question herself, wondering why this all would happen to her only after she decided to open up and allow people in her life or allow herself to feel these sorts of emotions. She started to think that maybe, if she went back to her old ways - alone - she would never have to feel this paranoia, fear, pain, and confusion ever again.
Satomi had planned to talk to Kyrrae about it, knowing that if anyone could pull her out of this slump, it would be the one she loved. However, fate decided to test Satomi's resolve even further by nearly taking him away from her forever. It all happened the same night Satomi had aided in bartending during the tavern/social night at the academy, which the even actually helped Satomi loosen up some of her stresses, and she had done a good job alongside O'rahn, feeling a bit better about herself. That is, until a faint and dying message from Kyrrae was heard on the academy's linkshell.
Panicked and fearing the worst, the group would collectively go out and search for him, Kyrrae barely able to give them little more than a few, dying words to where he was. And thankfully, with the effort of the group together, they had managed to find him, nearly dead in the river of Middle La Noscea. Thanks to the combined efforts of everyone there, particularly Clairy Fashonti and Rurujua Xoxojua, they were able to safe Kyrrae's life, but for Satomi, she was devastated. The girl just months ago had believed she'd never find anyone important in her life to love, and now, not only did she have it, but she was already about to lose it too.
With a nerve-wracking trip back to the academy, Satomi using O'rahn's chocobo to get there, Kyrrae's wounds would be further worked on as he was stabilized, Satomi taking charge in the infirmary alongside Clairy, both the alchemist and conjurer doing what was needed to aid Kyrrae. It was around this time though that Satomi started to break down as well. She did all she could for Kyrrae, but she'd never leave the infirmary, spending her time losing sleep, not eating right, not even bathing, as the girl cared for him while losing any care for herself, constantly doubting everything about herself. She felt that - if having these feelings left her this lethargic, saddened, and broken, then she never deserved to have them in the first place.
And among those feelings, she started to plan on leaving. Rurujua had talked to Satomi, telling her about his own past, and trying to assure her that the academy needed her, but when she realized he wasn't the same person she had thought he was, it was just another problem tacked on to her life, feeling like their friendship was riddled with deceit. And even then, her attention never left Kyrrae, the girl becoming more of a shell of her former self. A few days later, she would even tell O'rahn her decision - after Kyrrae was better, ...she was leaving the academy.
Relations
- ■ Grundy Byrde : When it comes to Grundy, Satomi's never quite sure how to describe him. No one knows Grundy better than Satomi herself, but sometimes she feels like that fact is a bad thing. She sees him as a child despite his massive size (even for a Roegadynn), but lately, rather than only seeing him as being her shield and protector on the front lines, she now starts to see him as a sibling. Older in age as he might be, his intellect makes her treat Grundy like a younger brother, and finally, she's been able to even offer him a hug, speaking softer to him, her heart opening up after all these years to reveal that she sees him truly as family. The girl is proud of him as he attempts to learn at the academy, and the two fight for one another to the point that one would give up everything just to protect the other.
- ■ Kyrrae Liminia : A gentleman thick and through, Satomi once thought him a pervert and prankster, but was proven very wrong about this. Kyrrae had become one of the few she feels she can rely on for nearly anything now. His kindness and patience towards her meant more to the scientist than she can explain, and overtime, the two grew fonder. The friendship overtime even became a strange but comforting relationship shortly after Valentiones day. And for awhile, all went well, Kyrrae helping her become more confident, relaxed, and the dates they went on teaching her what it meant to just treat herself like a person. The relationship was steady, but after several incidents, and both failing to find time for eachother, they had to break apart. Fortunately, the breakup went well, both understanding, and that night the two even having a toast to friendship. It's safe to say she still loves him, but more as a dear friend than romantically.
- ■ Chao Lingshen : For the two of them, it's as if they were destined to become friends. At first, it started as being co-works who highly respect eachother, but Satomi's curiousity for the Doman Miqo'te grew, just as Chao's interest in Satomi did as well. The two share so many of their secrets together, and Satomi finds herself often dragging Chao to the academy, just for Chao to later drag Satomi in social situations. They spend a lot of nights in the labs working together, and while it may seem a little childish, the two call eachother 'Science sisters.' Deep down, Satomi loves Chao as a friend, probably one of the best friends she could ask for, and quite frankly, there is no one else she feels she can share more of her secrets with than anyone else.
- ■ O'rahn Kevelan : At first, O'rahn and Satomi were at bitter ends with eachother, and he was one of the only people who Satomi ever found herself yelling at. But after many talks and getting to understand eachother, a bond started to grow. While he's not the most educated individual and a bit compulsive, it's that very nature of his that throws her off and keeps her life interesting. They've managed to settle all their differences awhile ago, and now have become quite close. When one of them is down, the other seems to always be there for the other. Whether it's an injury, or even just someone to talk to, they end up lending eachother a shoulder every time. O'rahn's even become one of the people she can tolerate contact from, as she doesn't push him away when he embraces her. Satomi sees him as a bit of a goofy brother figure, but one she cares very deeply about and wants to see grow. However, on occasion, people seem to assume their is more between he two, and even Satomi has to wonder once in awhile...
- ■ Imogene Holmes : The Hyur was someone Satomi very quickly got curious about, especially over a few of the tavern nights that occurred at the Academy. From her strange, blunt nature, to her experiments with food, Satomi wondered about her. Pursuing a conversation with her, which was rare enough for Satomi to do, the two found they had some in common, and neither really got bothered or tense by talking to one another. Eventually, they grew to care a bit, looking out for eachother in times of needs. Where Satomi becomes a guide to Imogene when it comes to the intellectual side of things, Imogene has become someone who protects Satomi when in need. Socially, the two are awkward with others, but around eachother they feel at ease, and have become close friends. From sharing secrets with one another, to even giving Imogene advice on decorating her room while Imogene returns it with advice about unique foods, the two had a quirky but entertaining friendship that she would never want to pass up.
- ■ Zoey Holendoey : The lalafell detective who helped Satomi in defending Sypher's case during his murder trial. She knows the lalafell is quite cold, and the woman has a way with verbally assassinating others with a grumpy attitude almost every hour of the day. However, Satomi can see she's got a good heart, and does her job for more than just the pay. After Sypher's case, the two still spoke, and nowadays, the two will share coffee and discuss smaller trials in life. Zoey's a regular face in the academy, supportive of Satomi, and even given Satomi some fashion advice or giving her little pushes in the right direction.
- ■ Elisea Renyven : As the leader of the Vylbrand Academy, Satomi has always had respect for her. Satomi never does have much free time, but she has attempted to awkwardly spend some time with the Mistress, finding it surprisingly relaxing. The fact that she doesn't abuse her power, and sees herself just the same as all of the other members in the academy puts Satomi at ease, and makes her comfortable with talking to the Miqo'te. However, deep down, she worries about the woman, noticing a loneliness in her heart, often seeing this sad, distant expression on her face she has trouble ignoring. Satomi doesn't know just how she'll do it, but she wants to help her somehow. She's been known to sometimes even try to sneak in a hug for the Miqo'te~
- ■ Dryce Pearlfinder : Dryce and Satomi are a very odd case. At first, when Dryce had shown to have a strange source of Aether and even admitted she wasn't normal, Satomi had quite literally attempted to dissect her in the name of science, wanting to harness that power to benefit Eorzea. This of course upset Dryce and many others who learned of this, which quickly made Satomi regret her actions, realizing she lost control of herself. The next morning, Satomi apologized for hours about the incident, deeply regretting her behavior. This would eventually turn to the two talking, and Satomi and Dryce forming a friendship. Overtime, they learned more and more about eachother, and now they have shared a lot more about their personal lives. Despite how odd things started between Dryce and Satomi, the two now are pretty close friends.
- ■ Sypher Corinth : A business partners for a few years now, Satomi has hired Sypher for protective services a few times when she's had chance encounters with him. Sometimes, their adventures had lead for days too, giving them time to understand eachother, and they've worked surprisingly well in sync, often words not even needing to be said. Though lately, seeing him in Ul'dah more as he's tried to settle a bit has lead Satomi to speak with him a little less professionally, and as friends. Having him later join the USH felt like a little blessing in her eyes, happy with how well she's seen him fitting in.
- ■ Senah Bajihri : At first encounter, Senah saw a rather strict and slightly moody side of the researcher, as Satomi was watching a class being taught from afar and didn't seem very fond of it, while Senah herself was a student. However, getting a chance to speak with her personally, Senah and Satomi realized they have a lot in common, and Satomi even fully supports her desires to learn more in Scholarly magic as well as the relationship Senah has with Evirine. That, with the fact that she is very understanding her shy nature, the two quickly seem to be becoming friends. Her wedding with Evirine was the first wedding Satomi ever attended, so the couple share a special place in her heart.
- ■ Evirine Bajihri : Lover of Senah Bajihri, Evirine was someone who at first, Satomi didn't get to interact with a lot. However, not too long after her wedding, Satomi started to see Evirine more, and the two shared more in common then they first thought. The girl has shown to be reasonable and quite composed, and Satomi feels relaxed around her, often enjoying their conversations and wanting to spend more time with her. It's safe to say that she feels like a close friend to the married couple.
- ■ Senel Curtis : From what Satomi has seen from the Hyur so far, Satomi's grown to really respect him. He's shown to be reliable more than anything, and was one of the people who first responded in helping Satomi when her lab exploded. She sees him as a kind natured soul, even one who's just a little comedic and knows how to brighten a room. She doesn't even get nervous around him like she often does with people, finding his presence to be a very welcomed company.
- ■ Catherine Nell : An Elezen with a very strange personality, Satomi's had a few run ins with her, almost every one of which ended in one of them bumping into eachother quite literally. Catherine often worries Satomi due to the work she does, nor does Satomi approve of it. However, she sees a lot of good in her, from the delicate and assuring nature she has, to how she's even helped Grundy. And so, Satomi's given her shelter a few times at the Academy, happy to see her visits there are well met. For the Elezen's protection, Satomi is even trying to get her to stay at the academy.

- ■ Erimmont Chevalier : For awhile, Satomi and Erimmont grew into having a pretty solid friendship, the girl even growing a faint crush for him. He's smooth, charismatic, and well liked. However, after he too left the academy, Satomi felt a distance growing between them, and now isn't quite sure what to think. Seeing him makes her feel awkward now, like there is something left unsaid.
- ■ Auriaune Fournier : Despite being a massive tease, Satomi's grown used to being thrown off guard by the Elezen woman. As a matter of fact, she's actually found herself enjoying it from time to time. She was actually one of the biggest influences in Satomi's motivation to join the USH, and it's a decision she doesn't regret. It's safe to say that Auriaune is someone she has a lot of faith in, and as the days went on, she grew more and more comfortable around her, knowing she could speak her most personal matters with the Elezen if she ever needed. Sadly, Auriaune had to move on, taking a job overseas. The two still write eachother though, even if she gets teary thinking about her now distant friend.
- ■ Sheena L'aveene : Having met the devious Lalafell in the Shroud, Sheena being around her Sylph friends at the time, Satomi was quickly annoyed by her. However, it wasn't until she realizes that the Lalafell was in fact someone who lived in the forests that she started to think of Grundy, and how he was in a rather similar situation. Call it pity, or hoping to educate the Lalafell so she could have a more normal life, Satomi had brought her to Ul'dah to become a citizen and live a more normal life. For awhile, she was a retainer for Satomi, gathering supplies for her and hunting for the woman, happy to do so. Though, overtime Sheena had gone missing, and many believe that quite possibly she may be dead.
- ■ Leih'a Relanah : A leader to the NC which Sheena is in, Satomi has had a few encounters with Leih'a, mostly in the Quicksand. And while professional, Satomi has enjoyed his courteous and respectful manners. Not to mention Sheena had spoken very highly of him as well. Because of this, Satomi has respect for the Miqo'te, as well as the NC as a whole, and hopes to even work with the Free Company here and there if possible and would love to see an alliance between them and the USH.
- ■ Nai Ruahki : Satomi sees Nai as a Miqo'te who is often cheerful, and always keeping others in great spirits. While it surprised her at first to learn that Nai was a guard to the USH, seeing her in action and how she has always defended the members -even Satomi herself a few times- has put her at an understanding. A few times, the two had talks in private over matters both light and heavy, Satomi's learned to feel very at ease around her and can treat herself less like a machine, and more like a person around her. Without Nai being around as much lately though, Satomi's picked up what she learned around Nai socially, and is able to carry on a more brave face in public.

-Satomi's name and slight inspiration was borrowed from a character in the [Negima] series. Though deviated far from the character in that series now, other than the obsession with science.
