A newly embraced Raen, Serylda is the head Dragoon of her family. She has experienced numerous hardships, and spends most of her time and energy protecting those around her. She eventually was overcome by her greatest rival, the great primal Leviathan.
Background
Origins
Born on the 14th Sun of the 4th Astral Moon in the refugee camp come to be known as Little Ala Mhigo, a young Raen girl spent 4 years of her life in poverty. Having left Othard with her original family, far earlier than most other Au Ra, their appearance was no taken kindly to others. Glamouring themselves as Highlanders to avoid possible persecution, the Raen spent most of her those days unaware of her true appearance. Most of her days spent just barely making it by, along side the Ala Mhigan refugees. On a day, just soon after their daughter's 4th nameday, the glamoured Highlander family had began to make their way to Ul’dah for trading and the possibility of relocation. On their route down, they were accosted by a tribe of Amalj’aa. During the encounter, the beast-men proceeded in cutting down her family, and mortally wounding the child with a cast of arcane magic to her head. Thought to be all dead, the Amalj’aa left with their belongings, leaving their bodies for the buzzards. Them having traveled partially through Central Thanalan, the girl awoken in the savannah heat to find herself surrounded by the lifeless bodies of her kin. Confused, afraid and heavily injured, the young girl began deliriously wandering in hopes of finding someone to aid her and her family. After walking almost a day without food or water, and making her way partially through Western Thanalan, the girl eventually found herself at her end, and laid to give in. Within the hour, a carriage came by, within it a family freshly exiled from their home in Ishgard. Upon seeing the presumably dead girl, although typically dismissing the dead, they felt pity at the display and picked her up. Upon the realization that she was still just barely alive, the family rushed the girl to Horizon for immediate medical attention. Originally planning on simply leaving the girl, the head woman of the family, Theldry Troklas, having longed to have a daughter after the birth of their now 6 year old son, insisted that they take the girl into their custody. Reinholdt Troklas, the head man of the family, although reluctant after their recent deportation from the city they came to love and hold their loyalty to, agreed to his wife’s plead. When the girl awoke days later in an Inn in Horizon, still in rather critical condition, the family first asked of her original family. Seemingly having no knowledge of her past family, or her own name, they bestowed upon her the name Serylda along with their own blood, Troklas. After clothing her, they had informed her that she would now be under their care and soon left for Vesper Bay to head to their new home in La Noscea.
Childhood-Teenhood
It was not originally known to the Troklas family of the true race of their newly adopted child, nor event hat of her glamoured race considering how young she was. Being midlanders themselves, and having been from Ishgard, trusting those different from themselves was never an easy feat. For a good 6 years of her life after being taken into her new family’s care, Serylda had experienced both many hardships and learned many lessons. Most of which was one that barred on her exterior. Serylda’s recovery was anything short of miraculous, however it did not come without its scars. After the Amalj’aa attack, especially the one casted upon her from one of their Thaumaturges, she was left with a rather blaring marking upon her face, one that seemed rather unnatural. Having scarred her left cheek, it had also damaged her left eye, causing her to be partically blind, and that the left side of her head could not properly grow hair and kept it permanently short to avoid much ridicule. Although she took many measures to hide or cover up her flaws, many of the children in her city often feared her or mocked her, afraid she was cursed do to the rune marking on her face. Growing fearful of both herself and those around her, Serylda began to isolate herself, and avoid coming in contact with those outside of her home. Reading in most of her spare time, or sparring with her only friend, her brother Rhyan, she had grown to fear other people. Her past had heavy negative effects on her as well. Witnessing the murder of her family and experiencing such a traumatic event caused her to repress her memories of such a time, almost to the point of having not a single clue of her past life. She also suffered from post traumatic stress, causing her to act irrationally and rude to those around her, her emotions strongly out of hand. Having noticed her unhealthy behaviours, her parents went to great lengths to help her reconnect and grow as a person, and become more sociable. Bringing her to social gatherings, and different classes to learn many crafts around the city, they also taught her politeness. By the age of 10 she had become a very refined young lady, that in which the Troklas family felt represented their name and their home appropriately. However, animosity had been sewned into the nature of their household. It had come to pass that their adopted daughter had not been a Midlander as they had originally presumed, but rather a Highlander. This brought much distress to the heads of the household, for their voyage to La Noscea had not come without reason. Originally under the banner of House Fortemps, the Troklas family came from a lineage of Dragoons. Both the mother and father coming from their own separate houses, it was their duty to conceive offspring that would continue their legacy as dragon slayers. Having bore their son Rhyan, they had no fears in their mind that he would be the next in line for the duty of being head Dragoon; even after Serylda had joined their family, it was assumed she was midlander as well, and that the responsibility would still lie on the shoulders of her older brother of two years. In their lineage, it is the strongest that becomes head Dragoon, not their oldest, which is why after a period of time the family became tense.
It was clear by her features, that their daughter was "Highlander". While growing up, her and her brother were usually about equal in height and strength, a typically ordinary occurrence for children around 7-8 years old. However after getting into their young teens, she had begun to grow exponentially more than her brother, towering him in both height and strength. In truth, Serylda was far smaller than her brother, though this did not change her strength; only once did she ever remove her glamour. Fearful of what she saw, assuming by her features she was "scale-kin" the very creatures her family kills, she vowed to never remove her glamour again.
Both were trained academically and in steel, however it had come to pass that their daughter would be stronger than their son at some point. Blood or not, she held their name, was fully capable of withholding the responsibility. After all these years, her parents had grown to love their daughter just as much as they had loved their blood son, however even they feared the worst. Serylda still had many fears and anxieties she dealt with, and to add on, Ishgardians were not very accepting of foreigners. Having left Ishgard originally, due to the heavy dragon infestation, and being unable to properly raise their son in such an environment, they had hoped to send him back to redeem their name and honor. Now it had become painfully clear, that who they would send back, could very well ruin any opportunity they could ever have of ever returning back to their beloved city and could send their daughter to her death. Torn between loyalty and the love for their daughter, the family decided on what they assumed would be the best course of action. They deployed Serylda out on her Dragoon quest, 6 years earlier than typically allowed. The risks were high, and her chances of death great. However being of Ishgard themselves, they knew the only way she would be able to represent them or even just herself, would be after she fought through the hardships of this journey alone, and unprepared. If she could make it back alive, she would be ready for anything their home had to offer, and they hoped with a heavy heart this would prove to be so.
Before her departure on her journey at the then age of 19, her dear friend and brother had warned her of what he had come to believe his parents actions were. He knew his father and mother had always dreamed of sending him back to Ishgard in their name, and to have to pass it to his sister instead did not come with great ease. He did not hate his sister for taking his duty from him, if more he feared for her life, for to him their bond was thicker than blood. He had told her that their parents had sent her on this missions as a death wish, in hopes she would never return; he had presumed that all this time and what had happened had caused them to hate his sister. Heart broken, Serylda was now determined to return and show her family that she was not only capable of winning back their honor, but also making a name for herself. She would be just as her mother and father had dreamed for her brother, and more. And so she set out on her quest.
Personality
Shy, and polite, Serylda has come a long way from how she used to represent herself. Wild and angry through most of her childhood, she spent a lot of her time hiding herself away, fearful and upset at how she felt and the world around her. She suffers from severe anxiety and is not fond of touches for several reasons. Through the tireless efforts of her family, she was able to refine her behavior and become a very dignified young woman.
Bound by her duty to her family, she is extremely loyal to their name and will stop at nothing to return their honor. This selfless attitude often puts her into highly-dangerous situations and causes her to get hurt often. Also a bit on the naive side, things tend to go over her head, especially in relation to romance or sexual-advances. This being a side-effect of the aether imbalancement she had while growing up, halting some of her mental growth.
Being covered head to toe in all different sorts of scars, she is also highly embarrassed of her body, and prefers to wear lots of clothing; this also because she does not tend to trust people, so she is always fearful of someone potentially trying to kill her. She feels uncomfortable around others who wear less clothing, finding it highly inappropriate and very "vulnerable"
