Appearance
Rather short and fragile looking Seeker with dark, nigh black hair with faint, red highlights, deep purple eyes and a cheerful smile. Her skin and build show that she didn't have to deal with a lot of physical labor and that she generally takes care of herself. Usually wears comfortable, light clothes which don't hinder movement, keep her warm, and if they can be fashionable at the same time? All the better!

Mannerisms
Shuyin likes to think logically and tries to apply that logic to the world in which she lives. She's a very optimistic person, always willing to help someone out or relax a bit in some nice, comfy spot (level of comfyness drastically improves when food is around). As a curious, wandering soul whe has her head up in the clouds fairly often, pondering about her next great adventure, next challenge, next... gambling table. A confident, friendly, kind woman could very well be the stereotypical person in the spotlight of any social meeting, but it almost never happens, as she retains a humble attitude and never tries to stand out too much, especially at the cost of attention towards other people around her. While interacting with others, she usually tries to be calm, respectful and she listens to people well, striving to be able to put herself in their position, before making any judgements. Questions regarding her past or her specifically are mostly dismissed, one way or another.
Philosophy & Ideals
Shuyin is a humble, enigmatic girl who draws attention away from herself and keeps her distance by acting carefree and frivolous. She sees herself as someone who's better off without forming strong bonds with other people. Due to this, she keeps travelling and rarely stays in one place for too long. "Things tend to get a bit boring after some time. If you stay in one place for too long, the fresh, sea breeze you felt the first time starts to stink with fish and be too cold for your skin, so why not change the environment before it happens and keep the memories the way you want them to be?"
There's time to act and there's time to wait. Shuyin is a patient person who understands that rushing forward with hot-headed attitude may sometimes cause more harm than good, but she also knows that there are moments when time is of essence. She believes that one shouldn't sway towards either of these approaches and tries to retain a balanced state of mind, balanced attitute and a balanced way of life. "Just because you like sweet food, doesn't mean you hate sour food, even if they are kind of opposite things. The same can be applied to everything else. I think that if you can find balance, life is far more interesting, tasty and overall more enjoyable."
No force in the universe can convince her that careful planning and solid preparation, especially data-driven preparation, is going to cause her trouble. She always comes with a plan. Or five. "Life is like a game of chess. There are correct moves and incorrect moves. You should always be aware of the state of the playing field, your available resources and possibilities. Only then you can take the optimal course of actions."

- Whenever she's nervous, Shuyin will run her hand through her hair, over and over. Sometimes it can look really silly.
- Shuyin likes to keep her hands busy. If she's not holding anything specifically needed in her hands, she's probably munching on peanuts.

Raised by travelling sharlayan botanists, Petra and Adrien Laufoix, Mayael was a rather unlucky child and misfortune kept following her, whether it would be often breaking furniture and toys or food going bad when it shouldn't. Despite that, she was a happy girl and had a lot of resolve to study to follow her parents' footsteps and travel the world to see different kinds of things.
Adolescence
After Maya reached age of seven, she was sent to Academia Aetherica, one of the sharlayan academies which educated people in subjects such as magic, medicine (both magical and non-aetherical), history, social etiquette, mathmatics or even strategy. She quickly became a pupil of most of the teachers and initially it made her the enemy of all the students. Her results weren't however a matter of innate abilities or some sleeping within her talents, but rather hard work and determination to study more than the others. Eventually everyone got used to that weird girl who studies way too much even for bookworms' standards and she was able to make friends.
Several years into her stay at the academy, she had a number of preferred subjects, such as magic, medicine, strategy and history and as such she was slacking a bit more when it came to less interesting for her topics. Regardless of that, she maintained the status of one of the best students of the academy and she worked hard to live up to that title.

Adulthood
Shuyin Rayen was a traveling gambler, who despite her young age was exceptionally good at winning, especially in card games. Though she was rarely cheating, and she was never caught doing that, she knew that her tendencies to take out much more money from the casinos than she had before stepping in were related to not just her card tricks, but also the fact that people around her seemed to have a really bad luck. She tried to not abuse it too much, but being unable to find a stable job made it difficult for her, especially given that she was somewhat addicted to gourmet food, as such covering the expenses of her travels and food choices led her to gambling rings more often than she'd ever want to admit.
