Behavior:

When battling a foe, Hokujin opts to outlast rather than outmatch.

Hokujin is a kind enough bloke. He can be loud, single minded, oft simple, and indeed reckless, but he is always willing to lend his aid to anyone who needs, and makes friends easily. He's always challenging himself, loves a good fight, and keeps strict watch over his physical health with rigorous training and diet. He is loyal to a fault and has a keen eye for bullshit.

Abilities

He is well practiced with a sword and shield, and has a practical understanding of hand-to-hand combat. But his strength lies not in doing damage, but in taking hits. Possessing no magical ability and only average martial prowess, Hokujin prefers to take the brunt of the abuse for his allies, fighting defensively rather than offensively.

Dislikes: Bad guys, villains, those who would harm innocents, and vegans.

Relationships

Family:

  • Arthur "Artie" Dunkle (Deceased): Hokujin's father, a Highlander mechanic and inventor who was born and raised in Garlemald, but left for Eorzea as an adult, hoping to use his mechanical knowledge for good. From there he moved to Halatali in Eastern Thanalan, where he met Hokujin's mother. The two courted for ten years before marriage, and we inseparable. But due to her tragic death, Arthur raised Hokujin as a single parent.
  • Annabelle Dunkle (Deceased): Hokujin's mother, a Midlander Alchemist from Ul'dah who moved out to Halatali to aid their gladiators with her alchemical skills. She died of a mysterious illness shortly after giving birth to her only child, Hokujin. She gave him his rather peculiar name.
  • Kitaeru "Kitty" Nunoji: Hokujin's 12-year older cousin. She encouraged his love of the fighting arts when he was a young child, and they often spent many evenings watching the Gladiators of Halatali train and compete. When the Garlean's invaded Eorzea, she became a Marauder of the Immortal Flames, as is a surviving soldier of Carteneau. She has since joined Hokujin in the Free Company, The Venture Association.
  • Samuel "Spinebreaker" Dunkle (Deceased): Hokujin's grandfather, who was a legendary Garlean pugilist. So large he was, even for a Highlander, that the rumor that he was part Roegadyn persisted his whole life. He gained the name Spinebreaker because of his simple yet brutally efficient fighting techniques. But Samuel shocked everyone by retiring from battle in the midst of his prime to start a family. He was only violent one other time - when his family escaped from Garlemald. He died when Hokujin was 3.
  • Andromeda Dunkle Nunoji: Hokujin's eldest Aunt, Arthur's older sister, and Kitaeru's mother. A haughty weaver, it is because of her that the bulk of the family didn't remain in Halatali with Artie and Annabelle, preferring the more "cultured" atmosphere of Ul'dah. She still lives there now, weaving gowns for only the most exclusive clients. She was married to a rifleman named Nicolas Nunoji, who divorced her a few years before dying in the battle of Carteneau.
  • Julia Dunkle: Hokujin's youngest aunt, and Arthur's younger sister. She was a quiet daydreamer who never could hold a job or take up any real interest other than storytelling and writing. After leaving Garlemald for Ul'dah, she became even less willing to conform to the norms of society, and the story goes that she ran off across the ocean with a Lalafell woman who she had been dating.

Friends:

  • K'ailia Yohko: Former Headmaster of the Ul'dah Garden, now a founding member of Hokujin's Free Company, The Venture Association.
  • Ambie Lapin: His former roommate at Ul'dah Garden, Ambie is fiercely loyal to him even when others doubt him. Also a founding member of The Venture Association.
  • Tyerial Oendrake: A Duskwight Bard who makes his living by adventuring, who has joined up with The Venture Association.
  • Jael Montfort: A Hyur Highlander Sultansworn who reached out to Hokujin to show her the ways of the Free Paladin. She also has joined TVA.
  • Ser Billiam: A unicorn from Coerthas who loves mature women rather than young maidens. He serves as Hokujin's mount and constant companion.
  • H'allabi Bamu: The Eyes and Ears of Ul'dah. Hokujin's business associate and occasional partner in private enterprises.
  • Emma Shepard: Another of the Venture Association, this Junior Conjurer has been taken under Hokujin's wing to learn the ways of adventuring.
  • Zethie Aldis: K'ailia's boyfriend and friend of Hokujin and the Venture Association. He once helped break a spell that had turned Hokujin into a Siren's zombie love slave.

Rumors:

Common Rumors (Easily overheard):

  • "Hokigen Dojo? What kind of name is that?"
  • "Nice enough lad. Always running around Thanalan. Never looks tired, though."
  • "He asked my sister out on a date just the other day! And she's betrothed! Y'know what he said? 'Leave your ring at home' - Nerve of that guy!"

Moderate Rumors (Moderately difficult to overhear):

  • "Nice hair, nice body."
  • "The attention span of a bloody twelve year old."
  • "I once saw him break a boulder in half with his head!"

Rare Rumors (Very difficult or rarely overheard):

  • "He nearly died during the Calamity, rescuing those children. My daughter owes her life to him. Great man."
  • "I'd gotten in bad with some loan sharks trying to feed my family. They came around to my place in Drybone, and were about to cut into my arm to leave me a 'reminder'. Hokujin came to my rescue and took the cut for me. Nasty gash, sure it scarred deep. I didn't even have enough means to repay him..."
  • "My sister had gotten a little too tipsy one night out with friends - as young ones are wont to do, y'know? - anyway, gang of thugs decides they can take advantage of her. They get as far as grabbing her shirt when Hokujin, in the dead of night mind you, leaps out of the shadows in naught but his night clothes and beats the thugs into a bloody pulp, ties 'em up outside the Immortal Flames office, then takes my sister home! I can't tell if he's a guardian angel or some kind of monster..."

Player Character Rumors (If you want to share one, feel free)

  • "His cat, Professor Speckles, seems to like to curl up right in his face as he sleeps. It's almost as if the poor thing is afraid he'll freeze to death in the night..." - Ambie Lapin

History

Early Childhood

Hokujin was born 21 years before the Calamity, on the 13th Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon in Halatali, to Artie and Annabelle Dunkle. Annabelle had contracted a strange illness a month before that she had been struggling to fight off, but died shortly after giving birth to a two-weeks premature Hokujin. Hoku was raised by his father and the other people of Halatali, many of which he was quite close with.

Hokujin's father, Arthur "Artie" Dunkle.

Apart from his many friends, his favorite part about growing up in Halatali was watching the Gladiatorial bouts. He watched brave warriors tackle incredible odds and even more incredible monsters and a spark was ignited inside of Hokujin.

The Calamity

As the sky split open and fire rained down about the people of Halatali, sending the town into a ruin of which it would never recover, Hokujin and his father did their best to organize the citizens and help them escape to Camp Drybone for shelter. Arthur died as the town crumbled around him, rescuing people from the rubble. Hokujin nearly died himself, as a vicious stone golem managed to escape from the gladiatorial cages during the chaos, and came after the group of children Hokujin was escorting to Camp Drybone. Hokujin fought the brute bare-handed, wrestling it into submission after a brutal fight that left Hokujin with disfiguring facial scars on the left side of his face. But none of the children were harmed.

Post-Calamity to Present Day

Hokujin spent much of the time after the Calamity in Camp Drybone. While many of the Halatali refugees spread throughout Thanalan and Ul'dah, Hokujin had no family, no home, no place to go, so in Drybone he remained. He had a tryst with an older woman during this time - a widow of the Calamity - but their difference in age led to complications and they broke up. During this time, Hokujin became a miner, privately owning his own small-scale mining operation, specializing in non-precious metals and gems. This trade eventually led him to the Silver Bazaar, where fate would have him meet K'ailia Yohko, newly appointed Headmaster of the Ul'dah Garden. She plucked Hokujin from obscurity and set him into the big city of Ul'dah, where Hokujin finally achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a Gladiator. He then began acting as K'ailia's personal guard.

Then, the deadly Magi known as the Plaguebringer began to attack Ul'dah Garden. Although Hokujin, K'ailia, Ambie, and the others managed to defeat him, he destroyed their school in the process, and began an anarchy in the school's ranks that would cause the three friends to leave the Garden and go their separate ways. Hokujin spent the intervening Moons training in Ul'dah under the Sultansworn, determined to become a Free Paladin and never allow his friends to be attacked again. After his training was complete, Hokujin met with Master Gegeruju of Costa del Sol, an eccentric Gillianaire who had taken to the young adventurer. Seeking to fund a group of adventurers of his own, he recruited Hokujin to start the Free Company The Venture Association. Ambie Lapin and K'ailia Yohko have joined Hokujin in this venture.
