A P P E A R A N C E

Yurei is a diminutive figure, small even for one of the raen. Her skin is pale white, almost sickly so, though she does not appear to be in poor health - and atop her head is a crown of blue-white hair, usually neatly kept. Both of these features give the auri girl a slightly ethereal look, complimented by her brilliant sky blue eyes and limbal rings. Sitting in stark contrast to her pale features are the vibrant red tattoos that surround her eyes, indicators of her job as a priestess. As is typical of her race, her scales are gleaming bone white, and from the ends of her forward-swept horns hang two small bells that chime and jingle as she walks.

Yurei's attire is often a match of white and red, both while serving at the temple and while wandering the Shroud. She can often be seen with her staff and bow slung across her back as she goes about her daily tasks with a cheery smile on her face.

H I S T O R Y

Born in a remote mountain shrine, deep within Doma’s borders, the young Yurei was a sickly child, at first. Her parents, unsure if she would live to see the passing of another moon, named her after the faint spirit she appeared to be - only to be surprised when the young girl not only survived, but thrived. She took quickly to the life of a shrine maiden, taking over for her mother when she fell ill with a wasting disease. She and her father took over the job of hunting the demons and the dead that infested the land - that is, until an ill fated attempt at freedom brought destruction to their home.

Fleeing the advancing Garlean war machine, Yurei and her family left the shrine behind. Meeting with a group of shady individuals known as the Tatsu-kai, they made a deal: they would take Yurei to Eorzea, and her parents would pay them in heaping sums of gil. Instead, the Tatsu-kai took the gil and the girl, then left her parents to burn.

In Eorzea, Yurei ‘worked’ with the the Tastu-kai, still fulfilling her job as a priestess by binding voidsent to masonwork jars of her own design. She was essentially a prisoner of the gang, forced to bind the demons away, which they would then use as distractions or backup in their criminal acts. It was only through the graces of a rival organization known as the Black Chocobo Gang that Yurei was freed from the employ of the Tatsu-kai, allowing her to escape.

Without the backing of the Tatsu-kai, and with no home to turn to, the young auri girl took to wandering the breadth of Eorzea alongside various caravans - she had decided to try and keep doing the only thing she knew how to: be a priestess. In her searching, she visited the wind-swept isles of Vylbrand, the shaded woods of the Black Shroud, the sandy dunes of Thanalan, and the bitter tundra of Coerthas. Each time, she looked for a place to erect a temple to the Spirits - and after her journey, she reached an agreement with the Seedseers of Gridania: they would allow her to rebuild a ruined home in the Shroud, and in turn, she would assume the duties of a Hearer - to tend to the wood as it needed.

Elated with the news, Yurei and a small group of Doman refugees set about rebuiling the home into what it stands as today, Seishin Temple, nestled in the eastern reaches of the Shroud. Yurei works alongside the Wood Wailers and the Order of the Twin Adder, when not serving as a spiritual guide and exorcist to those Domans and Eorzeans who choose to seek out her small sanctuary.

L I K E S

Conjury: As one might expect of a priestess, Yurei's Far Eastern art is very similar to the conjury of her new home. She quite loves the natural world, and her magic that lets her be in tune with it.
Meditation: Yurei spends several hours of each day in meditation - to the point where she can become upset or agitated when it is deprived from her. She finds it a relaxing, calming process.
Bitter foods: Much of Yurei's childhood food was prepared in traditional Doman style by her mother - and much of it involved bitter ingredients. As such, she's developed quite the taste for them, especially bitter drinks such as green tea.
Family: Nothing is more important to her than family - whether that be her own blood, or the new family she has chosen to make for herself in Eorzea.
The Kami. As a shrine keeper, it is Yurei's duty and oath to attend to the spirits of the land, better known by some as the Elementals. While some days she wishes that she could catch a break, most of the time she is glad to be of service to them.

D I S L I K E S

The Garlean Empire: Thanks to their razing of her homeland, Yurei has little love to spare for Garlemald as a whole, or it's citizens.
Thaumaturgy: Yurei has a predisposition against thaumaturges and their magic. While she has met plenty that are now her friends, she remains wary of those trained in the arts of fire, lightning and ice.
Voidsent: While part of her job requires her to tend to the land, the other involves her hunting and sealing away demons of all types. Voidsent, and the ashkin they often create, are some of her least favorite things in the world.
Ishgard: Her dislike is two-fold; first, she cannot stand the frigid temperature of Coerthas. Secondly, the outright hostile welcome from the Ishgardians during her brief visit has soured her against them - she is not likely to visit again.

Q U I R K S

Eorzean Second Language: While having a fairly firm grasp of Eorzean, Yurei struggles at times with longer, more difficult words, and can miss the point of some phrases or sayings.
Horn Bells: Small chimes hang off her horns, which she claims is to divert vilekin from her path and announce her presence to others.
Social Ineptitude: From being raised in relative isolation, Yurei can be awkward and odd during social interaction. She tries her best, and learns rapidly, at the very least, but can often ask questions that can be seen as cold or inappropriate.

S T R E N G T H S

Conjury: Born with an innate talent for communing with the world around her, Yurei is a talented and natural conjurer. While her favored element is wind, she is trained in controlling and manipulating all three of the elements of conjuration: earth, water and wind. Her conjury differs from that taught in the Stillglade Fane of Gridania - Yurei's art is more ritualistic and relies heavily upon both song and dance while drawing upon the aether of her surroundings.
Spirit Medium: As the shrine maiden for the Seishin temple, both in Othard and in Eorzea, Yurei has undergone the extensive training to place herself in a trance-like state that leaves her open for spiritual contact. She uses this to contact the deceased for their loved ones, or in rare occasions to attempt to directly contact the spirits she and her people venerate. The trance is brought upon by a special elixir she was taught to craft, as well as soft ritual singing. Usage of this talent is especially draining, and can leave her bedridden for bells. It's also unclear if she's actually contacting the spirits, or if the elixir is causing hallucinations....
Saionji Sealing: As the acting priestess and caretaker of the Saionji Shrine (or what she's made of it, in Eorzea), Yurei is the family head and lead practitioner of the Saionji art of sealing. Using clay pots of her own making, sealing charms and aspected crystals, Yurei is capable of sealing voidsent or other aetherial beings away - preventing them from escaping in most cases and containing their physical forms.
Archery: Yurei's weapon of chose is the longbow, particularly the daikyu. While not an archer in terms of warfare, Yurei is exceptionally skilled at putting one arrow exactly where she needs to to bring down her prey, often demons or undead. She also practices the art of kyudo, or meditative archery. She keeps her bow in pristine condition, and can be seen practicing with it out in the forest on occasion.

W E A K N E S S E S

Fire: During her flight from Othard when she was younger, Yurei was trapped in a burning building as the Garleans set fire to the village around her. The intense heat and choking smoke from the flames nearly claimed her life, though with timely intervention from other villagers, she managed to escape. To this day, Yurei is not fond of large amounts of fire, and oft refrains from using fire magic of her own.
Physical Frailty: Ever since she was young, Yurei has been physically frail. While she's trained for most of her life, she still lacks the stamina to undertake grueling physical actions for long lengths of time. Forced marches, brutal combat, or intense exertion can tire her out far quicker than would be normal. Thusly, she prefers weapons that can keep her foes at range, or performing spellcasting from a distance.
Exhaustion: In combination with her physically frail body, Yurei's particular brand of magic relies heavily upon motion and endurance. It's very easy for her to tire herself out quickly while casting, and that's not even including the natural toll channeling such energies leaves on her body. She runs the very real risk of collapsing in the middle of dangerous situations if she over-extends herself past her limits.

M O T I V A T I O N S

It is my duty, my oath: Yurei considers her position as priestess very seriously. She is honor bound to offer aid to those in need, and to bring solace and peace to the land all around her. She may not always like feeling bound by a duty she might not have picked up otherwise, but she bears the burden with quiet dignity.
The right choice is not the easiest one: At heart, Yurei is a person who seeks peace and tranquility for the world. However, she's fully cognizant of the fact that many people don't want that, and actively seek out the opposite. In particular, cultists stand out. While many are simply misguided or disillusioned people, Yurei feels no qualms about killing them. The choice she makes is the right one, but not the easy one.

  Saionji no Izayoi (  ✖) ( NPC ) - Mother
"It is my greatest shame, my most upsetting failure, that I was not present when Mother passed into the embrace of the kami. I can only hope that one day, when I go to meet her, that she can forgive me for the slight. I...I am sorry, Mother. I miss you."
  Saionji no Tahei () ( NPC ) - Father
"I can only hope I do Father proud. I am glad he chose to come back to Eorzea with me, and to take up the training of the guard. I know his age is getting to him, though please do not tell him I said that. I feel all the better that he is safe...well, safer, standing guard than out hunting."
  Hasekura no Norio ( ♥) ( NPC ) - Ashigaru
"I owe Norio a great deal. Of all those who helped me build the temple, he was the first to offer to stand as one of it's guardians, whenever I would have need of his skills. I cannot think of a better soul to help protect that which I have built - and his family is always welcome at my door. It is the least I can do in return for his devotion to the spirits and myself."
  Yatsukahagi no Hana () ( NPC ) - Priestess-in-Training
"What would I do without Yatsukahagi? Though she is not yet fully trained, the simple ability to leave the temple in her care for a few short hours to collect myself is one of the greatest gifts I could ever be given. I trust her dearly."

  Taka Swiftstep ( ?) - The Lost
"I was not sure what to make of Taka, when we first met. He seemed so...odd, confused, about his new surroundings in Eorzea. And when I saw that he was...was a shinobi, I was even more unsure. But Taka has proven to me that he wants to make things right - that he wants to atone for the betrayal of his village. I would be a poor priestess, and an even poorer friend, if I did not support him with everything I am."
Lancelaux Fiermont () - The Dragoon
"I owe Lancelaux a debt of gratitude - one that I have strived to repay in turn. It was through his efforts that I am not longer beholden to the Tatsu-kai, and for that I am eternally grateful. Though I may not always...ah...approve of what I have heard he can get up to, I would be an awful friend to not offer my aid when he needs it. As long as it is not...ahm...illegal."
Nathaniel of Salem ( ♠ ?) - The Painted Man
"Sir Nathaniel is a mystery, even at the best of times, I feel. I believe him to be a man of many faces - ones that he can switch at will to be whomever he needs to be when required. I worry for him and his health, given how much he sacrifices. But I fear him too. Those that are so....ah...deep into their jobs often lose themselves to the dangers of it."
Madison Allard () - The Swordsman
"Sir Allard--ah! Sorry, Madison, is a unique one. I have not seen anyone quite so, ahm...ferociously dedicated to doing the right thing as he is. But I am not so sure if his intentions are always noble...his heart is worn close to his sleeve, and I fear for what that may do to him in the future. To be so open is both a blessing and a curse - ah! I am glad he has found Tsuwamono, however. They are very ahm...nice, together?"
  Sage Emeraude ( ✔ ?) - The Lieutenant
"I had first met Lieutenant Sage when she insisted upon checking on me after I was injured in combat with a demon. Despite her dour demeanor, and harsh reputation amongst Adder recruits, I know she has a warm heart beneath. My only hope is that the next time she needs test new training swords...I do not have to be her sparring partner. I do believe I still have welts from the last time..."
  Zekiki Zeki ( ✔) - The Hermit
"The hermit of Thanalan is...perhaps a deceptively intimidating figure. Many of those that I have spoken to give her a wide berth, and even amongst other thaumaturges, she seems to garner much respect and admiration. What I do know of Zekiki Zeki makes me cautious, but...she has done nothing to prove herself a danger. I believe she simply wishes to be left alone, for whatever her own reasons may be."
  Sarangerel Bolormah ( ✔) - The Aunt
"Sara-san has been there for me, ever since I was a child. In those brief moments between my training, she would sometimes sneak me snacks or a book that was not just more texts on geomancy and oni. In those moments, I think I got to see what a different life could have been like. I treasure those moments. Thank you, always."

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!
"Miss Saionji is a valued help. Why, just last moon she and a squad of Wood Wailers sanctified one of the old Gelmorran deepcrofts. The way they tell it, she fought off hordes of voidsent nigh single handed." ─ Twin Adder Second Private
"A kinder soul you couldn't hope to meet. The amount of times she's welcomed us into her shrine...I just wish we could repay the favor somehow." ─ Doman refugee
"Don't let her pretty face fool you - the times I've seen her put a man down for being a cultist, or face off against some voidsent twice her size...Saionji can be real tough when the need is there." ─ Wood Wailer

◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
"I heard that priestess can sometimes be seen hangin' 'round the Ossuary in Ul'dah. What's a conjurer like her doin' around all them thaumaturges, I wonder?" ─ Ruby Road vendor
"She ain't all smiles and good will. Weren't that many moons ago I swear I seen her with some unsavory looking folks - Domans, yeah, but nasty ones. Them jars of hers ain't just for containment, I'm saying that much." ─ Brass Blade
"Sometimes, when you catch her out of the corner of your eye...she has this faraway look in her eyes. She seems...sad." ─ Gridanian citizen

◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!
"Something doesn't add up with her. I've never seen a priestess do things quite the way she does. And wasn't the Saionji family hyur?" ─ Doman adventurer
"There'll be a reckoning for her, just you wait. No one crosses us and walks away from it." ─ Tatsu-kai prisoner
"I heard she uses blood for some of her magic. Blood! That doesn't seem like conjury to me - that seems far darker..." ─ Stillglade Fane conjurer
