He wears his thick dark brown hair long and free, and judging by its sheen, he takes good care of it. He is rarely seen without a smile, either of a genuine or devious nature. His golden eyes often hold some spark or fire, taking in every detail about him while betraying few facts themselves. Due to his long hair and unblemished face, Zigovali is occasionally mistaken for a woman--a fact he has sometimes used in the past to his advantage. Scars & Markings: Zigovali was often seen wearing red facepaint: two broad lines across his cheeks, and several dots in a row above these lines. After his and Shoshopu's bonding ceremony, he has changed his facepaint from red to gold. His chest bears numerous faint scars, and one prominent one: a grievous scar over his heart, from what appears to be a stab wound. Voice: Zigovali speaks with a distinct accent of uncertain origin. Its most prominent feature is the pronunciation of most "S" sounds as "Z" sounds. Also noticeable is the surprising depth of his voice, a strong baritone more readily seen in a man twice his size. Clothing: Zigovali never dresses modestly, favoring bright colors, stylistic asymmetry, and a brazenly exposed chest. He always wears outfits of predominantly crimson hues, giving him the moniker “Red”. He weaves small charms and trinkets into his iconic silken bandana, such as small stones, seashells, and semiprecious gems and metals. He wears a great deal of jewelry as well: no fewer than three different rings, including a diamond bonding band, two gold necklaces, and a gold earring that resembles the sun. Zigovali has an ego that more than makes up for his size. His disposition is one of near-constant braggadocio and showmanship, resulting in a "love him or hate him" attitude from all around him. His stride is one of both swagger and grace, his voice either suave or irritating, but always difficult to ignore. It's hard to tell if his persistence for panache is meant to impress others, or himself. Zigovali's true nature is difficult to discern, being a man of many contradictions. An apparently noble spirit is countered by an ever-scheming mind, and his good deeds are always shadowed by questionable methods. While quick to rush to the defense of his allies, he is equally prone to seeking an alternative to confrontations altogether, or even conspiring with multiple sides to secure a favorable outcome. His allies either trust him implicitly or not at all, and neither stance is wholly incorrect. Due to his family's low income, nearly all of Zigovali's education came from his father's improvised lessons and his mother's stories. Zigovali does not remember his early childhood, but clearly recalls the financial troubles his parents endured throughout his life, leading to their enlisting in the Immortal Flames to attempt to cover expenses. Zigovali himself attempted to scrounge together gil however he could, performing odd and sometimes illicit jobs for anyone he could find. The Garlean Invasion and The Calamity (1572 6AE) Upon the VIIth Legion's invasion of Eorzea, Zigovali's parents were needed by the Immortal Flames more frequently, and he often found himself living at home alone while they were away. On the occasions his parents returned home, he sought to lift their spirits as much as possible, and the last few moons leading up to the Calamity were both the happiest and saddest times of Zigovali's childhood. Three days before the fateful Battle of Carteneau, before his parents left home to answer the call to arms, Zigovali was given the signature red bandana his mother was always seen wearing. She instructed him to hold onto it for "safe-keeping" until she returned. Unbeknownst to Zigovali, this was the last he would see of his mother. Ziziva and Davali were both slain in the Battle of Carteneau. Zigovali did not learn of his parents' deaths until over a sennight later, when an Immortal Flames representative delivered the news. Post-Calamity (1 6UE - 2 7AE) Only days after receiving news of his parents' deaths, Zigovali was forced to abandon his childhood home with whatever he could carry, selling several family heirlooms in the process. First traveling to Ul'dah, Zigovali relegated himself to the alleys with other refugees, turning to petty crime on many occasions to make ends meet. Zigovali attempted to emulate his mother's storytelling to entertain the refugees around him free of charge, or the patrons of various Thanalan taverns for gil. Two years after the Calamity, Zigovali was caught attempting to pickpocket a Duskwight bookkeeper at the Ul'dahn Coliseum. Rather than turn him over to authorities, the man, Trevaine Montesquieu, instead took the young vagabond under his wing. Trevaine educated Zigovali in economics, politics, and above all, crime. In time, Zigovali became a highly accomplished con man alongside his new partner-in-crime, generating a great deal of gil in the process. A vast majority of his earnings were held by Trevaine in a savings account. Besides his work with Trevaine, Zigovali found himself performing many favors for a large variety of people, from fellow refugees and petty criminals to wealthy merchants and other influential figures. Despite his impoverished state, he often rejected repayment in gil, instead insisting that they simply owed him a favor. While a seemingly innocent request, he never forgot a single one of these favors owed him--something that would later serve him well. Trevaine's Betrayal, and New Adventures (2 7AE - 4 7AE) After five years of criminal collaboration, Zigovali awoke one morning in late summer with news that Trevaine had vanished. His mentor left no word as to the manner of his leaving, nor his destination or plans, and the savings account set up for Zigovali was emptied and closed. Trevaine had played Zigovali for a fool, running a long con spanning five years, all the while grooming Zigovali as the perfect henchman. Torn by this betrayal, Zigovali left Ul'dah and scoured for a new opportunity. He enlisted with a Free Company, and began honest work as an adventurer. During his time as an adventurer, he witnessed far greater and more terrible things than living on Pearl Lane could ever afford. He met an arcanist, Shoshopu Shopu, by chance at a tournament, and the two soon grew close. He learned to wield arcanima, and soon after, astromancy, with the help of an old trinket that had belonged to his father. Thanks to the many favors he'd saved over the years, Zigovali soon found himself back on his feet, and as a modestly wealthy Ul'dahn businessman--all the while orchestrating his own smaller criminal enterprise within the city. Zigovali soon found Trevaine again, and after hostile correspondence, swore revenge. Nearly a year after his mentor's betrayal, Zigovali used his connections and new allies to dismantle the burgeoning criminal organization Trevaine was constructing, and soon, killed the man himself in holy fire. With Trevaine gone, Zigovali moved on, leaving the Free Companies to work as a freelancer. He proposed to Shoshopu in autumn, and they wed on 18th First Astral that following year. Now a married man, business owner, and freelancer, all seemed peaceful for Zigovali. It was not to last. Enlightenment and Tragedy (4 7AE) Now free of Trevaine, Zigovali continued his studies into astromancy. His starglobe, Estrella, proved a powerful focus for his magic, and guided by intuition and mysterious voices, he attuned himself to all Six Gates. With his power now at its peak, Zigovali focused on utilizing his resources for his own ends, both selfish and selfless. With R.E.D. Mining, he could support a comfortable lifestyle for himself and Shoshopu; with his astromancy, he won four Spellguard tournaments, and engaged in multiple leves and other work. Zigovali's renown grew, and happiness was abundant in his life. During the course of running his new business, Zigovali had traded with a mysterious entity for several moons: Blacksky Collective, a trading and shipping company operating in the Sea of Clouds. Further investigation revealed Blacksky to be funding sky pirates, and potentially trading with the Garlean Empire. Zigovali cut all business ties, and pursued his investigations further. Eventually, he discovered the truth: Blacksky operated as a proxy for Garlemald in Eorzea, and sought to destabilize the city-states while the Eorzean Alliance engaged in the invasion of Gyr Abania. Turning to his closest allies, Zigovali led a guerilla campaign against Blacksky, ridding their influence from the continent and pushing them back to their headquarters, the floating sky fortress of Grand Thunderhead. Yet in the final assault, Zigovali came face-to-face with the man behind it all: Trevaine, having somehow survived their last encounter. Zigovali was forced to retreat, and come up with a new plan. He led a con against a mercenary company supporting Blacksky, in order to weaken Trevaine's allies. With that done, he led a second assault on Grand Thunderhead, and faced Trevaine. In the final hour, Zigovali deceived his allies, encountering Trevaine alone before they could join him. It was a costly mistake: Trevaine's magic proved too strong, and in the course of his duel with Zigovali, he destroyed Estrella and severely wounded his former pupil. He then turned to Zigovali's allies, and in the course of the battle, dealt a killing blow to Zigovali. Zigovali was not dead for long, miraculously saved by the powerful conjurer Ehfi, and returned to the fight. Using a soulstone once hidden within Estrella's rings, Zigovali gained enough power to defeat Trevaine, and left his demise to his allies. Zigovali's wounds were severe, both physically and mentally, and he walked away from the battle in a far worse state than he entered it. Yet his greatest shadow was now gone; Zigovali was finally, truly free of Trevaine, and now had the opportunity for a new life... NPC Ziziva Ziva ( ♥ ✖ ) - The Dancer Nobody in the world loved Zigovali more than his mother, and he held nobody else to such high regard. A stunningly beautiful Dunesfolk dancer, Ziziva taught Zigovali much of what he now knows best and has taken to heart, and her stories and dance lessons served to shape his identity. The last time he saw his mother was three suns before the Battle of Carteneau; she gave him her signature red bandana, "for safekeeping", until she returned. She never did come back from Carteneau, but to this day, Zigovali has remained unerringly devout to her request. Davali Rigovali ( ♥ ✖ ) - The Peddler A lowly Plainsfolk trader and self-taught scholar, Zigovali's father Davali gave him a love of learning and business. Davali, along with Ziziva, served in the Immortal Flames just prior to and during the Battle of Carteneau, and fell with her in that fateful conflict. It wasn't until years later, looking through much of Davali's leftover trinkets and baubles, that Zigovali came across the starglobe which he now carries by his side. Trevaine Montesquieu ( ♥ ♠ ♠ ♠ ✖ ) - The Shadow A seasoned Duskwight bookkeeper and swindler, Trevaine served as Zigovali's guardian in Ul'dah when he was left orphaned by Carteneau. For seven years, Zigovali faithfully worked for and looked up to Trevaine, all the while unaware he was being manipulated by his mentor, psychologically abused and conditioned into the perfect pawn. Trevaine vanished suddenly one day in 2 7AE, taking Zigovali's life savings with him, and finally showing his true colors. After a long and arduous conflict in 3 7AE, Zigovali believed Trevaine to be dead by his hand, only to encounter him again a year later. In their second encounter in Fourth Umbral of 4 7AE, Zigovali defeated Trevaine and allowed his allies to deal the killing blow. Even with his death, Trevaine has yet to give Zigovali complete peace of mind, still haunting his thoughts almost every day. "Estrella"/Estrelle du Melodique ( ♥ ✖ ) - The Astrologian On the surface, the starglobe Zigovali called "Estrella" was nothing more than a tarnished bronze ringed disc. Yet within the artifact rested the soul of a powerful, long-deceased astrologian of Sharlayan, Estrelle du Melodique. Serving as a spiritual guide for Zigovali, Estrelle led him to attune to the Six Gates, and achieve enlightenment. In Zigovali's final battle with Trevaine in 4 7AE, the starglobe Estrella was destroyed, leaving behind only the old soulstone of Estrelle. Whether or not the spirit of the astrologian has survived has yet to be determined. "E" ( ✔ ? ) - The Informant Almost nothing is known about E. All that Zigovali knows is that the man is a very reliable informant, and doesn't ask any questions. Norman Hayward ( ♦ ✔ ) - The Levemete A Midlander levemete, and an informant for Zigovali. Though not entirely a coward, his backbone is rather soft, and he is swift to admit defeat. Rhotberk the Render ( ♠ ✔ ) - The Reaver A Seawolf pirate, captain of the Redgut Reavers. Though he and Zigovali have had good business dealings in the past, Rhotberk is not a man to be cheated, yet Zigovali cheated him all the same. Rhotberk now seeks any excuse to wring Zigovali's neck, though the latter's swift thinking and swifter running has so far stalled such a fate. Bad Wasp ( ✔ ) - The Arms Dealer A Hellsguard arms dealer, and head of the Stinger Gang in Ul'dah. Having been in business for decades, Bad Wasp allows his business to almost run itself, and the Stinger Gang now hosts the Hive, the largest underground arms market in Thanalan. Zigovali has done a few jobs for Bad Wasp in the past, allowing him free access to the Hive. Bad Wasp doesn't ask any questions, but he doesn't answer any, either. PC Shoshopu Shopu ( ♥ ♥ ♥ ) - The Muse A lalafell summoner of great skill and intellect. What began as Zigovali's usual flirtatious advances quickly evolved into a romantic interest, and he and Shoshopu agreed to see where a committed relationship might lead. Shoshopu is truly his better half by far, possessed of a pure heart and kind soul. She often serves as a voice of reason to Zigovali, in contrast to his fiery and impulsive nature. Nobody on all of Hydaelyn knows Zigovali quite like Shoshopu, sometimes not even himself. After a year together in a committed relationship, Zigovali and Shoshopu wed on 18th First Astral, 4 7AE, under the customs of her nomadic family traditions. The couple has remained happily married every since, and are nigh inseparable. S'kye S'yoponi ( ♥ ) - The Assistant A lalafell engineer with no memory of her past, S'kye's initial oddities gave way to hidden wisdom, and she and Zigovali have since become close friends. She has become his official Assistant (entirely of her own volition and insistence), and is among the few people he can trust completely, and rely upon for nearly any task. Shou Lushan ( ♦ ✔ ) - The Freelancer A miqo'te researcher of Allagan technologies, and leader of a small mercenary group operating out of Thanalan. Zigovali knows of no one else so versed in Allagan history and the properties of aether, and she is quite keen in many other fields besides. He has conferred with Shou on a great deal of issues, and she remains one of his few true confidants. Behind the ever-present sarcastic and facetious façade, she is a great friend and ally to Zigovali, one he has great trust in and respect for. Eaubront Shopont ( ♦ ) - The Gambler An elezen swordsman, and member of a small mercenary group operating out of Thanalan. He and Zigovali share much in common, including their general demeanor and swagger, a tendency to gambling, and roots in Ul'dah; however, they stand opposed in other areas. Despite their differences and disagreements, Zigovali knows Eaubront to be dependable and reliable, and is always glad to fight at his side. Ehfi Rhinsu ( ♦ ) - The Hearer A miqo'te Hearer, and member of a small mercenary group operating out of Thanalan. Among the noblest souls Zigovali knows, Ehfi has proven to be a reliable ally and friend. Her magic has been brought to bear more than once against Zigovali's enemies and in the defense of his allies. When Zigovali was slain by his former mentor Trevaine in 4 7AE, it was Ehfi that restored him to life--a kindness he will never be able to repay. Virara Wakuwa ( ♦ ) - The Martial Artist A lalafell from the Far East, highly skilled in stealth and the martial arts, and member of a small mercenary group operating out of Thanalan. The cultural gap between her and Zigovali has led to many discussions, though he yet remains not wholly sure who she truly is. Virara has assisted Zigovali with little question on several occasions, and that alone leaves her in good standing with him. Ayla Thatcher ( ♦ ) - The Bard A Midlander bard and lancer from Gridania, and one of Zigovali’s first friends outside of Pearl Lane. Her ever-calm demeanor and deliberate mind has served as an effective foil to the hot-blooded Zigovali. She has grown to become a good friend and confidant to Zigovali, and while he does not see her often, every meeting with her is a delight.
