Niklas was born to a Paladin father, Croix, and a White Mage mother, Selene, in Ala Mhigo. He truly felt at home around nature, tending to the local animals. However, in the year 1557, when Nik was only 5, the Garleans invaded. Both of his parents died in front of him, as he was running away to safety. He absolutely loved how beautiful the rest of Eorzea is, but he was struggling to survive in it as well. Eventually he found his way to Coerthas, where he managed to eventually build himself a home and get his own food. When he was 20, he started hearing a voice pleading desperately for help, and he stumbled into a cave filled with Orichalon, a rare material, and along with it, a small Miqo'te girl imprisoned behind stone bars. He brought the Orichalon back home, saved the Miqo'te girl, naming her [[Rena Gran|Rena]] and secretly forged his own sword, named Ragnell. When it was finally ready, Nik and Rena, with determination, set out to go and start adventuring throughout the realm of Eorzea, thus beginning their many adventures.

When Dalamud started to fall, and when Niklas and his group, the original Gran Knights, were invading Castrum Novum, Sarah betrayed them for Nael. The despair this brought on Niklas awakened a different side of him. During the Calamity, his parents were two of the warriors that were fighting in the battle. Niklas and his group mysteriously survived the Mega Flare from the Primal Bahamut, however they were all separated as a result. For five years, and for the first time, he was truly alone. Niklas Gran is an Ala Mhigan Free Paladin that had his own soul moved to a blue crystal shortly before his death, being found by Solis Claritas and soon started sharing his body with Solis, guiding him along with his knowledge. He has since been revived into his own body and serves as Solis's partner and mentor.

Personality

Normally people get surprised when they first see a talking blue crystal, but when you get to know Niklas, you get to know a nice fellow. Niklas has a calm, rational mindset that is the opposite of someone like say, Solis Claritas, although he is prone to sarcasm, a habit borrowed by his close friend Aaron Frostheart. In combat he observes his surroundings instead of just rushing in without thinking, a trait he learned since his "death". He truly cares for his friends and allies, and would do anything to make sure they all stay alive and well.

Nik's swordsmanship is refined and sturdy, and uses his speed to outmaneuver his opponents and catch them off-guard. He does not name his techniques, as there isn't a need to do so, but he knows some techniques from his good friend Aaron Frostheart, whose similar fighting style blends in well with Nik's own fighting style.
