History
Before The Calamity
- Brom's childhood was unexceptional in almost every way. He'd always had the gift of intelligence, but his parents always 'allowed' him to squander it on things that his teachers would often call illogical. It was his imagination that flourished at such a young age. He was always the ring-leader amongst his friends, always coming up with new ways to get them into trouble, always coming up with new stories to act out, new imaginary enemies for them to pretend-fight.
- To clarify, saying that Brom's parents 'allowed' him to use his gifts as he saw fit would be something of a misnomer. Truth be told, his parents weren't around very much. They were lower class citizens, and as Brom himself always says, "Those who work 8-Gil-an-hour jobs tend to need those 8 Gil very much." Brom was raised in infancy by his grandparents, and as an adolescent, he was largely responsible for himself while his parents were away. His father was harsh on his failures. Nothing ever seemed to be good enough for Brom Sr, a trope that played out well into Brom's adulthood.
- When he was 16, Brom met, courted, and fell in love with a young Hyur by the name of Leyara by way of introduction from his best friend and her sister, Alsa. Brom and Leyara were married by the age of 19, a wedding that was nearly derailed by Brom's enlistment in the Gridanian militia - he was being transferred to Ul'dah to assist with the oncoming Garlean forces. Leyara refused to lose him, however, and enlisted right alongside him (it was the only way, due to certain circumstances surrounding Brom's father), purposely requesting transfer to Ul'dah - a request that was begrudgingly approved, so long as they served in different units.
- From age 19 to 23, Brom, Leyara, and eventually Alsa, though she lived separately, lived happily in Ul'dah as a loving family. Though Brom had always been slightly abrasive and difficult to get along with, the worst of him was yet to come, and Leyara kept him in check, as she was generally considered to be a sweet, even if somewhat snarky, girl.
Post Calamity
- Brom was a broken man following the calamity. His wife, Leyara, had disappeared that day along with the other Warriors of Light. Determined to find out what happened to their mutual loved one, Brom and Alsa moved to Limsa Lominsa and opened Umbral Investigations, a private investigations firm created simply to find and bring home those who disappeared that day. There were very few leads, and the ones that were, were few and far between, so the pair started taking cases on a private basis, sometimes even going so far as working for the Eorzean Alliance members.
- As time marched on, Brom's depression at losing his wife ate away at him. He became reclusive, bitter, downright angry. He drove away everyone who tried to get close to him, he focused solely on his cases so that he never had to deal with actual people. He became obsessed with his puzzles, like they might hold some kind of hidden truth for the world.
- Together with his team of employees and Alsa, they moved throughout Eorzea, taking cases, completing puzzles, solving mysteries. For roughly two years, this continued, until finally, Brom's self-destruction had gone too far. He'd been drinking heavily, he'd been hiring prostitutes for twelve-knows-what on an almost daily basis. Sometimes he even hired them *just* to go out on cases with his team and antagonize them. Shortly thereafter, after over two years of working together, his team unceremoniously left him, moving onto other jobs, other agencies - less asinine people.
- It was Brom and Alsa alone for a long while after that. Alsa was extra sweet to people to make up for Brom's malicious attitude. When asked why she hung around him so often, she always replied, "Oh, he isn't so bad, once you get to know him!" Though, toward the end, even she didn't sound like she believed it anymore. One day, Alsa left, every bit as unceremoniously as the rest of his team. Rumor has it that she didn't even tell him she was going, she just disappeared.
- Brom was alone then. And that was how he stayed for over a year. Alsa wasn't there with him when the Warriors of Light returned and his wife wasn't among them. Nobody was. He was alone - and he was sure he would be forever. He continued taking cases, though his ability to focus on even them waned as he got angrier and angrier, drunker and drunker, lonelier and lonelier. After a while, Umbral Investigations went bankrupt, the storefront closed, and Brom started taking cases on a personal basis - he still did love his puzzles after all.
Present Day and Beyond
- Brom was briefly associated with Alothia Starkwood's investigation firm, Jutat De. Ever the self-saboteur, Brom ran. He, in his own words, "Stepped off the world, watched it turn for a spell," before returning to Limsa Lominsa to start anew ... again..
