Wherever you may go, Gridania will always be your home." - Guildmaster Ywain APPEARANCE Hathaway is a tall Miqo'te male with light blond hair and icy blue eyes. He has the tanned skin of someone who has been out in the sun for most of his life, and his body is toned and supple due to years of running and climbing across Eorzea. This flexibility gives him a natural affinity for lance combat, and when in danger he uses his speed and maneuverability to slide, jump, and disorient his opponents. Like most Miqo'te, his tail and ears are fluffy and somewhat sensitive, but they do help him balance and give him slightly enhanced hearing. Despite his training, Hathaway has very limited magic experience, so he usually focuses on physical combat and simply tries to beat obstacles into submission. In addition to the lance, which he can be seen with most often, he's also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and recently has taken up the rapier. PERSONALITY At first glance, Hathaway can seem stoic, wearing the serious expression of someone intensely focused on a specific objective. While his background and current occupation might make him distrustful of rough-looking strangers, he is generally polite and cheerful, and has no issues holding casual conversation. Once he becomes comfortable with someone, he jokes frequently, flirts, and is easygoing, thoughtful, and naturally curious. His history as a prostitute makes him open-minded and flippant when it comes to sex and romance, although he realizes that many people do not necessarily feel the same way. He has a strong desire to be a good person, and so he never fails to help someone in need, even if his willingness to go out of his way to solve problems can lead to him being taken advantage of. On the flip side, his tendency to do the right thing implies that he views being a "hero" as a self-imposed responsibility. In extreme cases, this could lead to him acting as judge, jury, and executioner, following his own set of potentially conflicting rules, morals, and guidelines in an "ends justify the means" sort of way. His status as a hidden Red Otter agent for Gridania and being a magnet for dangerous situations and fighting has the potential to amplify these impulses. With no end in sight to the Garlean conflict, attempting to make a difference might cost Hathaway everything. When he was still an infant, he was snatched away from home and brought to Ul'dah by traffickers, where he was swiftly sold to the highest bidder and left on the doorstep of a brothel. The Madame, a young Au Ra woman who ran the establishment, took the responsibility of raising and nurturing him, teaching the young boy reading, writing, arithmetic, and other basic subjects. He was given the first name "Hathaway", most likely to sound more "exotic" or unique to prospective buyers, and the last name "Snow", a placeholder name for offspring without parents. At his insistence, perhaps being grateful for being given a place to live, he worked as a prostitute, having private sessions with female and eventually male clients. Despite growing up in this unusual environment, the Madame cared for him like he was her own child, protecting him as best she could from the seedier elements of the city. To this day, she considers herself his surrogate mother. Difficulties in the aftermath of the Calamity forced the brothel to close, and he took the chance to move back to Gridania for a fresh start. Over the course of the next few years, he earned a reputation as a competent Lancer and helpful Adventurer, eventually falling in with the Order of the Twin Adder under the command of Vorsaile Heuloix. Because of this, he is immensely loyal to the city-state for giving him an opportunity to break with his past. Unfortunately, whether due to a lack of gil, his own sexual proclivities, or both, he returned to the sex trade in his spare time, mostly in Ul'dah. Eventually this dangerous profession caught up with him, and after multiple incidents involving violence, blackmail, and forced coercion, Hathaway found himself at a crossroads. THE STORY SO FAR... In addition to adventuring and exploring around Hydaelyn, Hathaway acts as a consultant for the Order of the Twin Adder, handling beast tribe relations and other sensitive matters when required. His successful negotiation with the Beastmen thus far has earned him recognition and the rank of Captain. However, because of problems arising through his work in the sex trade, he has decided to quit prostitution completely and go all in on a ambitious yet risky proposal: joining a secretive and practically defunct unit of the Twin Adder called the Red Otters. His aim as a member of this group is to investigate, infiltrate, and take down criminal organizations, military enterprises, and other illegal elements threatening Gridania and by extension, Eorzea. With one partner, limited resources and support, and a questionable history, the odds are against him, but Hathaway seems determined to throw himself into a dark endeavor which may have consequences that utterly destroy him. Hathaway occasionally comes to her for advice and values her opinion, although his relationship with her mate, Vasir'li, could be described as contentious. Maybe he's a little envious of her "normal" life? ♦ ♥ Shiva Pasalo: An Au Ra thief that Hathaway encountered on the top floor of the Gold Saucer, Shiva is unpredictable, suggestive, and secretive. Hathaway quickly found himself pulled into the Xaela's life, which is a constantly shifting set of cover identities and stories. Despite the danger, he was taken by the younger male's blunt and unapologetic attitude, and his flirtatious, teasing nature. This eventually led them into an intense sexual relationship, confusing Hathaway greatly, but after some time and traumatic events, their relationship has developed into something more romantic. It's safe to say that losing him would be devastating. ♦ ♠ Vasir'li Solhu: Rhysa's mate. Hathaway wasn't thrilled about meeting him, and the other Miqo'te seems to get a kick out of pushing his buttons. He suspects Vasir of being involved in illegal piracy of some kind, but specific answers elude him. That said, Rhysa's approval is enough, and he's developed a begrudging respect for him. ♦ ♥ Veyha Yanjahl: An occultist and hunter who lives in Gridania, Hathaway has had a couple sexual encounters with Veyha, mostly in the name of "curiosity." He finds her tribal connections intriguing, but doesn't know that much about her at the current time. ♦ ♥ ♣ L'Rinhi Kett: An alluring woman that Hathaway met while tracking down a Starlight gift for Shiva. Somehow, they ended up in bed together, and have an on-again, off-again sexual relationship. He trusts her enough to be honest about some of his secrets. ♦ ♥ ♣ Madeleine Lanverlais: An Elezen Hathaway encountered during an event sponsored by the Obsidian Court, an underground criminal organization. Madeleine seems to keep her cards close to her chest, leaving him in the dark about her motives. Whether he's said too much about himself to her is another story. Hathaway frequently confided in her during his younger years in Ul'dah. Enjoys teasing him. But later on you wouldn't see him for a while and then he'd be back from Ishgard with some piece of machinery, or he'd be coming back to the Canopy on the last airship from Limsa. Around the time of the Dragonsong War, he ventured into the Sylphlands, said he was curious. I knew he was still training with Ywain, so I told him he wasn't strong enough to go, but I think he took that as a challenge rather than a warning. I couldn't believe it when he came back. I don't understand the lad. I don't think he likes spendin' money. Music Sound of the Wind - A peaceful song symbolizing a less hectic time in Hathaway's life. 11 Months - A more contemporary pick with lyrics evoking defiance and pain, but most importantly, hope. You Know My Name - Hathaway may be an agent, but this song also represents someone entering a world that they are not entirely prepared for.
