Glass-circle.png Overview

Khalun Ejinn

Khalun Ejinn, born on the 17th Sun of the 6th Astral Moon, is a Xaela of the Ejinn tribe, known for their ability to hold their breaths for extremely long periods. While she had the role of a simple fisher in her tribe, she has branched out since becoming separated from them and arriving in Eorzea. Khalun has become a dedicated student of astromancy, to the point that she can now proudly bear the title of healer and perform readings that are mostly correct. Her main motivation was to "not be useless," especially in combat situations, which she's starting to feel that she's finally accomplished. Still, she's well-aware of her weaknesses, and is ever seeking to improve herself for the sake of her allies. And so she can take higher-paying jobs and buy more pretty clothes.

Having been raised as a nomad, Khalun wanders often, though these days she's found near Uldah more often than not. Her Free Company, Might & Magitek, has their estate in the Goblet, and she is reluctant to wander too far for too long unless she knows the other resident healer is tending the clinic. While fishing isn't something she needs for survival anymore, she would feel strange without it, and the water has always felt like a second home. Khalun hates the cold, but drags herself up to Ishgard regularly to continue her studies. The stars feel closer there, which almost makes it worth it.

The Ejinn

The Ejinn

((OOC Note: Most of this is headcannon, since SE gives me two sentences to go on.))

The Ejinn tribe, with their excellent lung capacity, roam the waterways of the Azim Steppes, migrating towards Doma and its outlying islands as seasons and fishing conditions change. The tribe is peaceful and able to avoid most conflict thanks to their ability to travel long distances by swimming. They travel light, with few worldly possessions, especially those that are not particularly waterproof. The Ejinn's fondness of water cause them to always stick to warmer climates, and it is not unusual to see them wearing nothing or near to it unless venturing into a settlement to trade.

Tribal life revolves around fish and fishing. Fish, and other creatures and plants scavenged from bodies of water, make up most of their diet. If the tribe had paused for a time, they might cook the fish, but otherwise it was eaten fresh and raw. Nearly all Ejinn are a deft hand at filleting fish, to the point where their skill became an attraction in some of the towns they passed through. Since given the chance, an Ejinn would rather be in the water than out, they primarily catch fish by spearfishing with some help from nets and traps. They are also somewhat proficient in line fishing, however, as some waters aren't suited for swimming due to boat traffic or other dangers. The Ejinn took whatever fish they didn't eat into towns, usually in Doma, to barter for other essentials.

Where it concerns culture and customs, the Ejinn were among the more "civilized" Xaela tribes. Their frequent trips into towns to trade made it necessary for everyone to learn at least some of the local customs, so the tribe's members are generally well-socialized... at first glance, anyway. The structure of the tribe is entirely foreign to most Eorzeans, and even Domans. The Ejinn are effectively a commune, and children are raised by "the village." It is not unusual for a child to not know who their biological parents are, especially with the tribe's extremely nomadic habits and relaxed views towards relationships. With no concept of marriage, the pinnacle of an Ejinn relationship was to "claim" someone as a mate or partner, so that others (especially of the tribe) would not lay with them. This claim is mostly sexual in nature, and serves the primary purpose of making sure most of the tribe isn't accidentally related to each other. It is more common for members of the Ejinn to form sexual or romantic relationships with people outside the tribe, thanks to their communal life making it feel like almost everyone is some kind of family. Fellow nomads who understand the sort of life they lead are especially popular.

Physically, the Ejinn tend to be slender, though this has more to do with their favored activity than anything hereditary. Nearly all of them have significantly less body hair than other Xaela, giving them less water resistance. There are a few odd traits running through various bloodlines in the tribe, among them: pale skin that collects freckles instead of tanning in the sun, scales that are leathery instead of hard, soft and scaly webbing between fingers and toes, and heightened low-light vision.

Past

Past

Khalun lived most of her life as a rather mediocre fisher in the Ejinn tribe. She was the sort of girl who didn't really stand out in any way, good or bad. Khalun was neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with her lot, just bored. Her one exceptional talent was her ability to befriend animals, but she was rarely able to keep pets that couldn't make the tribe's long underwater migrations.

When Khalun was 26, the tribe made a regular trip into a Doman village that ended up being anything but. As was usual, the Ejinns spread out to relax and barter. And that was when the Garleans swept in, quickly setting up checkpoints. Khalun ended up separated from her tribe, whether because they didn't realize she was there or were unable to fetch her, she still doesn't know. Now in an area under Garlean occupation, the Xaela focused on keeping her head down and surviving. In this time, her fishing improved from both practice and the aid of a very special animal companion, Popoto, a lesser panda.

As the Garleans crept ever closer to the village, a particular miqo'te conscript caught Khalun's eye. For months, she watched Nadi'a Lamore from afar, daydreaming and fantasizing about her crush but never really intending to act. And then, opportunity struck. In the chaos of the Empire's push to conquer Doma, the two found each other and escaped together on a ship with many other refugees. They eventually landed in Uldah, where Khalun and Nadi'a were able to start (or restart) their lives in Eorzea--Khalun by fishing, Nadi'a by taking on adventuring jobs. However, his occupation (and Khalun's lack of combat ability) eventually lead them to split, and Nadi'a departed in search of greater challenges.

She returned to a semi-nomadic life, moving from town to town and living out of inns. Khalun found that she struggled to fit into Eorzean culture, and eventually became terribly homesick. A lonely year passed, during which she lost Popoto as well. The panda simply wandered away one night, and hasn't been seen since. Khalun took this in stride; at this point in her life, she was used to sudden departures. Now that her catches weren't as bountiful, the Xaela was forced to take up a variety of part-time jobs to supplement her income.

During Uldah's period of unrest, she ended up caught in a spontaneous riot, and might have died if not for the timely intervention of an astrologian that Khalun remembers neither the face nor name of... because of how quickly she fled from the entire situation. Still, this mage left a strong impression on her, as did the terrible feeling of watching people fight and die and not being able to do anything but cower. The Xaela made the long trip to Ishgard to begin studying astromancy, which she took to surprisingly well. More than that, she found joy and passion in the study, and comfort in reading the future through the cards... or trying to.

Present

Present

A chance meeting in Uldah reunited Nadi'a and Khalun, much to her joy. Though her infatuation with him had cooled, he remained the only person she could count as a friend, and her only living tie to life before Eorzea. Upon hearing of her loneliness, he recommended that she consider joining a Free Company. Khalun soon signed up with Might & Magitek, the company that Nadi'a had recently rented a room from.

Khalun quickly found a place for herself within the company as an apprentice healer to the clinic's physician. Very quickly, since the very night she attempted to inquire about the position, a heavily injured woman was brought in. Between Khalun and Kiipa, Sara was healed, and Khalun threw herself into healing and medicine with renewed determination, encouraged by her small success.

The Xaela had always found the idea of "family" as a group of blood-related, closely bonded individuals to be incredibly alluring, and often felt as if she had somehow missed out with her life in the Ejinn tribe, having never really had parents or siblings. In taking care of Sara, the two women bonded and realized they both longed for the same thing--a sister. While they initially agreed to be "pretend" sisters, Khalun has come to realize that maybe there isn't as much separating what she has from the "real" thing. Additionally, she has finally managed to resolve her longtime crush, becoming Nadi'a's lover. The two struggle to reconcile their differing cultural views on the relationship, but have agreed to just try to have fun with it.

Personality

Nature & Demeanor

Nature & Demeanor

Khalun is generally cheerful and upbeat, if a little airheaded. She tries to approach everyone and everything with enthusiasm, and to always keep an optimistic outlook. She hates to dwell on bad memories, and tries to move on to better things as soon as possible. Khalun is very easily excited and has a tendency to speak faster than her brain can keep up.

However, her bubbly demeanor is, in part, an act. She is generally a cheerful person, but not given to the levels of excited extroversion that she usually displays. Khalun has a great fear of abandonment due to past incidents, which she believes is because she's kind of boring. Thus, she tries very hard to be optimistic and friendly in an effort to be more likable. In more serious situations, or when spending time with those she's very close to, she tends to be more subdued and thoughtful.

Khalun has only been in Eorzea for a little over two years, which means her knowledge of the world still mostly comes from her tribe. While she wasn't entirely ignorant of "civilized" life--they often passed through Doman villages to trade--she does sometimes have trouble with more subtle aspects of social interaction. For example, Khalun can often tell when she's being lied to, but is unable to pick out which statement is the lie. The Ejinn tribe was for the most part communal, so Khalun wasn't raised with a concept of family like most Eorzeans. She is enamored with the idea of such close bonds, and excited to adopt close friends as "pretend" siblings. The Xaela has awkwardly "claimed" Nadi'a Lamore as a mate, still struggling to reconcile modern, Eorzean ideas of relationships with what she grew up with.

Her interest in astromancy came in part out of a desire to be able to survive a fight in a world increasingly embroiled in conflict. Khalun took to magic with ease, though understanding the stars and reading cards properly gave her more challenge. While it was a means to an end at first, the Xaela has found a passion for astromancy. She loves being able to help people, and studying the cards gives her comfort. Khalun hopes to better hone her skills as a healer by learning more traditional, non-magical methods. She is also cautiously looking towards picking up a non-magical combat discipline, having had a few brushes with foes where her spells were ineffective. After all, her other goal for studying a combat discipline was to avoid encountering a situation where she felt entirely useless.

Appearance

Glass-circle.png Appearance

Khalun is small and slight with a swimmer's body. Instead of tanning from all the time she spends in the sun, she retains her pale skin and seems to collect freckles instead. Her natural hair color is a bright red, and she is noticeably almost hairless apart from head. She exhibits the common auri trait of limnal rings on her eyes, though they're an unusually dark shade of blue, giving her green eyes an odd tint in the right light.

For someone who, not too long ago, hardly wore clothes with how often she was in the water, Khalun certainly loves them. Most of her earnings are spent on new outfits, which tend to be some combination of cute, sexy, and flashy. She's not above dressing for function when the situation calls for it, but dancing is more fun in a twirly skirt. She tends to favor Doman styles when she can find them, since her frequent stops with her tribe left her fond of the nation.

Unlike some auri, Khalun's scales are mostly soft and leathery, hardening at the spines on her tail and the horns at her head. Aside from her expression, her tail is often the best indicator of her mood. The more she's thinking about something, the faster it's moving.

Talents

Glass-circle.png Talents

Abilities

Abilities

Khalun is a moderately-skilled healer. She can't heal large, grievous wounds, but she can keep a patient stable for a long period of time. Small injuries are no problem. She's currently learning more traditional medicine so she can care for what magic can't mend. As a fortune-teller, the Xaela is slightly better than most of her peers. Her greatest pitfall is failing to see the world beyond her own opinions and concerns when considering her readings. Khalun is very adept at spear fishing, but that tires her out faster than line fishing. She's also been neglecting her fishing rod in favor of her astroglobe. Still, she's competent enough to keep herself fed, with some left over.

Combat

Combat

The entirety of Khalun's combat ability comes from her astrologian spells. There aren't many, but they do pack a punch, especially Gravity, which is a large spell that can even yank people off their feet. She can also use her cards to enhance the skills of her allies. For healing in combat situations, in addition to her regular kit, she has a few shields that can mitigate damage or protect someone from danger entirely.

Khalun first met Nadi'a when the two were trapped in Doma under Garlean occupation. They later escaped and spent some time settling back in Eorzea before heading their separate ways. A few months ago, a chance meeting offered the opportunity to rekindle their friendship... and then resolve Khalun's long-unrequited crush. Despite their regular disagreements, they are each the most trusted person in each other's life.

Sara and Khalun became fast friends, bonding quickly over their former tribal lifestyle and tendency to be a little airheaded. Or a lot, in Sara's case. The two decided to become "pretend" sisters after realizing that both of them wished they had one. They try to keep up with their sisterly duties, going so far as to dye their hair to match each other (it makes sense in their heads). Khalun does her best to guide her somewhat naive little sister without stifling her.

IC Frequency: Send me a tell, and I will make time for you! If you don't have a reason to seek my character out then we can come up with one. My schedule and availability are all over the place so I don't often have regular hours... though the farther it is from Tuesday, the more likely you are to find me not busy with PvE. I'm also pretty much always up for RP outside of the game (through chat programs) as long as you don't mind intermittent posting.

Character Injury: Gimme a heads up if it's something that would be effecting my character for a while. Otherwise, Khalun is a healer so it's more practice. 8D
