x. General

Mylene is a traveling independent fisher, who makes small coin from selling her catches to merchants across the three city-states, as well as from picking up fishing jobs from the levemete at the adventurers' guild branches. She is considered to be new to the trade itself, but has been fishing all her life during her past travels with her father.

Soon after the beginning of her journey, Mylene was recruited into an Order of adventurers called The Tomial Order. A free company with a goal to assist with the rebuilding efforts of the encampment in Mor Dhona by taking up a wide variety of freelance jobs. Over time, Mylene has come to see the members of the order as family, and will always make every effort to not only contribute to the order's goals, but also to be a loving and loyal friend to its members.

x. Appearance

For a Hyur Midlander female, Mylene is as plain as they come. She has lightly tanned skin, olive-green eyes, and somewhat unkempt brown hair that falls to her shoulders.

Her body is not built for combat, but despite her frail looking build, she has developed some upper-body strength from carrying equipment on the road during her lifetime, as well as from the occasional use of her bow.

She is on the shorter side of the height spectrum; growing up on the road forced her and her father to be content with whatever food was available for them on that sun, even if it wasn't very nutritious. If a little more coin were available on their hands after a job, they'd manage to acquire some food from the markets at whatever city-state they were near.

x. Past

Mylene grew up as a porter, and for lack of a better word, a ‘lackey’, for a traveling sellsword father named August Wharf (also known as “That Nutter” to a couple of Gridania’s merchants). She often recalls memories of chasing after him as he left her behind, laughing at how slow she was, while he excitedly embarked on a new job to obtain stolen goods or save a lost child. She carried their goods and equipment, took care of all the errands and despite her reluctance towards violence, she was occasionally forced to use her bow alongside her only friend whom she called ‘Father’.

Even with his appearance as a naive, goofy and irresponsible man, August was a very clever and perceptive individual. His wit, combined with his skill with arms, had made almost no quest impossible to him. Yet, looking back, Mylene realized that her father never took on any jobs that endangered them too much; probably because she was traveling with him. Whether or not this was one of the things kept his reputation under the radar is a fact that remains to be seen.

Mylene and her father were never able to stay at one location for a long enough time to make any acquaintances other than their temporary ‘Yorzeans in Distress!’, as August called them. The only familiar faces were the merchants whom they stocked their equipment from. It was running for job after job, traveling between Gridania, Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa, and camping anywhere in between when need be. They were a family who were always alone, together.

But, as Mylene grew older, she began to feel disdain for the way her father always kept them on edge. Despite his cheerful attitude towards her, the way he had always pushed for her to use arms had made her resistant instead of inspired. Eventually, she decided to abandon the bow her father taught her to use... completely. Day after day, that had proven to be difficult; the conflict between the necessity of survival skills and her pacifist morals had created a constant point of argument between her and her father. In some way, Mylene's refusal to fight was her own, weak way of rebelling, embodying her condescension towards the lifestyle her father chose for them.

Nevertheless, Mylene’s simple life on the road with her father, with all its difficulties, taught her valuable life lessons of patience, kindness, and honesty.

x. August Wharf

Life

August Wharf, like many young boys his age, dreamed of nothing more than earning the right to the title of Dragoon. Someday he would join epic battles, fighting the dragons under the blessings of the Holy See's Knighthood. He was but a simple Hyur, his father was an errand boy for one of the Hyurian officers at Dragonhead. He was a nobody, in the eyes of the Elezen noble houses, but by Halone, he will one day be celebrated, as one of Ishgard's heroes.

Yet the dream never came. He wrote, visited, begged every messenger and watchman he could find, for a name-drop, an opportunity, anything that could help him apply to the ranks, only to be ignored or rejected. He felt deserted, forsaken by Halone. The anger was driving him insane. He saw others, less capable, less worthy, join the knighthood. Yet he was not about to forsake Ishgard. He was not like the others; he was no traitor.

On a dreadful, snowy night, a man came to him, commending him for his passion and loyalty. He said that he knew of the young boy's situation. "Fear not," he told him. "There is still a way for you, to become a hero for Ishgard".

Seven years had passed since that night. He was surprised he had lasted this long. His recruiter came to congratulate him, another successful job. The Faces of Mercy were pleased. He had acquired a taste for blood since he joined, and had lost count of the lives he took. August was celebrated alright, though not in the way he expected to be, growing up.

"I hope that the Gridanian woman was to your liking? A fine reward, I must say." The older man snorted, as he tossed a bag of coin at August's feet.

"Keep it up." He said as he turned away to leave. August looked down at the bag. He kicked it angrily and it hit the leg of one of the chairs, slightly moving it.

A couple of more years had passed, he was fed up. He was going to leave the Faces of Mercy, and he wasn't going to get killed. His second 'Faces' contact now owed August his life, and was going to help him escape. August is to be reported dead, and then it would all be over.

He went looking for her, the Gridanian woman.. What was he going to do? Beg for her forgiveness? He didn't know, but all he wanted to feel was atonement for what he did to her. As if atoning for that single act could erase all that he'd done.. He knew he sure didn't deserve it.

Perhaps Halone enjoyed mocking him.

The conjurer stared at the distressed man, vacantly. "Was she family? You are quite late.."

He had halfway bought his hand up to his eyes when he saw the small child. The resemblance struck him. His eyes widened, looking back at the conjurer.. "What is her name..?"

"Mylene. Like her mother's."

It was nearing Mylene's 18th when it happened. Her father had sent her off to nearby Gridania to run errands and restock on supplies. This life took its toll on the girl, he knew, and it wasn't because of all of his practical jokes. She was naive and gentle and she wouldn't have known how to protect herself if he hadn't pushed her to learn how to use his bow. Nonetheless, they were both content, considering the circumstances. After all, they managed to survive the Calamity, together. Every day was a new adventure, and slowly she was coming into her own.

It was later that day when he felt a familiar, uneasy feeling.. He realized that he was being watched. Calling out, his eyes widened as his former recruiter stepped out from behind the bushes.

In a hurry, Mylene bid farewell to the Elezen man and ran through the Blue Badger Gate as she carried the bag of newly mended armor on her back. Reaching their camp only to find her father lying down, a single dagger pierced deeply into his chest.

x. Present

The Beginning of the Journey

After her father's death, Mylene spent some time living a quaint life in the La Noscean countryside with the gil her father had made over the last few jobs he'd taken. Soon enough, though, the money would run out and she would have to figure out a plan for how to support herself for the rest of her life. She decided to make use of her fishing skill and made her way to Limsa Lominsa to register herself at the adventurers' guild there in order to be able to receive fish requests from the levemetes at any of the guild's branches. With that in order, she took an airship to Gridania to settle a small debt her father had left with a merchant, before continuing to Ul'dah, where all of those whom look to make a living go.

Making Friends, and Self-Discovery

Mylene was terrified upon her arrival in Ul'dah. Highly sensitive and quiet, she would show social anxiety traits when she'd meet someone new due to the fact that her father was always the ice-breaker (in an often embarrassing way) when they ran into people. She was used to being accompanied and protected by him and was not accustomed to socializing with strangers any further than making brief exchanges with merchants. With a promise of a meeting from one, she waited at the local tavern, the Quicksand, where a Keeper of the Moon would ask to share her table. Little known to her, that the Miqo'te would eventually come to be the first of many friends she'd make along the way, and one of the very few individuals she'd give her life to protect.

A few suns after her arrival in Ul'dah, she was pulled in to a conversation by a Miqo'te with a Lominsan accent, and a cheerful female Lalafell, whom introduced themselves as members of The Tomial Order. Inspired by their passion, and with a strong desire to see new places around Eorzea, she decides to join them despite her then-reclusive nature. During her earlier days at the order, she would often feel like she was lacking, and unable to contribute, due to being the only non-fighter among the adventurers. Eventually, she would form strong bonds with the Order's members, and would experience incidents, both good and bad, that she would have never been able to experience, otherwise. She now resides with them at the Order's newly obtained quarters at the Mist residential district.

A New Sense of Purpose

Constantly watching her friends get injured or attacked, and knowing that she could do nothing to help them due to her inability to engage in combat, had a profound effect upon Mylene. She realized that, if she had not been so stubborn about her extreme pacifism, she might have been able to help them avoid harm. And that, if she took up the bow once more, she would be able to help them in the future. Was that not what her father might have been trying to teach her all along, that the world is harsh and that she would need to be able to defend herself, and her loved ones, against it?

Mylene reached out to Raikemi Maira; a member of The Tomial Order whose skill and mind she had always admired from a distance. Raikemi would soon become an important figure in Mylene's life; providing her with Archery lessons, advice, and moral support; not only as a mentor, but as a friend.

Though she is set on her new goal, Mylene would not yet abandon her fishing rod. She now continues to balance her fishing trade and her archery lessons, as she experiences more adventures with her friends. Yet, she is no heroine by any stretch of the imagination; as she still finds herself nervous about dealing with combat, and will only reach for her bow under extreme circumstances.

x. Behavior/Personality

As Ul'dah is the crossroads in the desert, Mylene found herself meeting with plenty of people, many of them far outside of her previous limits of comfort, which had been safely defined by her father. With this flurry of acquaintances, and the myriad situations they brought with them, she has steeled herself to develop a backbone, and the ability to actually hold a conversation with them, even going as far as being able to display her passion or displeasure when she needs to express them, even if that display leans towards timidness, still. This is a major improvement from the extremely anxious and silent demeanor she displayed when she started her journey alone.

She hates the feeling of being labeled as useless. This stems from the judgement she used to receive when expressing her distaste for combat. She gets a lot of drive from the feeling of being trusted and the feeling of taking care of someone else whom she is close to. Thus, companionship and loyalty are very important to her. She strives to help out those she cares for, and is usually devastated when her offer to help is rejected, whether directly or indirectly.

Mylene can be passive at times. Her anxious nature often makes her turn away from pursuing the things she wants if she feels that pursuing them will create some sort of conflict of interest with those around her. She also suffers from a lot of self-doubt, as well as the tendency to internalize things too much, causing herself and others some misunderstandings.

Sometimes, without realizing, she will rub her left wrist when she is nervous.

Alexei Volkov - Different, different how this man regards Eorzea, and how everyone regards him. Volatile, volatile how his relationship with Kahn'a could change, and how Alexei's relationship within himself seems to be changing. Sad, sad how a man is tormented by his past, but... hopeful to see him try to live beyond that. Mylene has been told not to worry about him now, but she will still, if only for his sake.

Charlotte and Siegfried Tiln - Known, only to Mylene, as Catra and Bruh'a Buremi. Two Keepers of the Moon whom have changed Mylene's world as she knew it. Though now a part of her past, she often woes over the memories, in silent reminiscence.

Ciel Wulfe - Mylene met Ciel alongside Yvelont Navarre. An image of femininity and elegance in Mylene's eyes, which makes any compliment recieved from Ciel all the more flattering. Ciel is also a mysterious enigma to Mylene, as she observes more sides to the Elezen upon every encounter. An ally and friend, Mylene looks forward to any opportunity to converse with Ciel, or to watch the songstress perform.

Gunnolf Hellfire - Known to Mylene as "Pup", her close Lalafell friend, bereft of sight. The lack of light in his eyes has not dimmed his zeal for the world, though. Mylene takes every chance she can to make the little things in this one's life easier: patting chairs to give him a sense of where they are, and helping to make sure that he still feels connected with the world. Pup has been a bright spot in her life, a teddy bear that she finds herself wanting to hold when things get especially dark.

Hitari Senjougahara and Yonene Yone - A charismatic Hyur and a friendly Lalafell. The two "sisters" of The Tomial Order. They have both made Mylene feel comfortable and welcome upon her joining the order. Mylene feels safe around them and is at her most talkative when the three of them are spending time together, and even though that might not happen often, at the slightest need, she would drop everything and run to their aid, no matter what.

Kahn'a Od'hilkas - From the very beginning, he was the first person to take note of her. As the world inside the Quicksand swirled around Mylene, tumultuous, he took a seat at her table. Though this shocked her, he would be the one to continuously provide her with a measure of security within the bustling city of Ul'dah. She looks to him as a friend, a brother, a role model, in a way. Although they no longer get many chances to spend time together, they often sends letters to one another, correspondence being unfettered by the bonds that their circumstances put on them.

Kelsa Tathdel - Mylene takes kindly to the friendly highlander, and is thankful for her role in the healing of her friend Hitari. Though Kelsa's strength both amazes and frightens Mylene, especially after witnessing Kelsa display one of her combat techniques on K'hoshi's arm, rendering it paralyzed for a few moments. Despite that, Mylene is appreciative towards Kelsa's view on the value of people's lives.

Mykaul Valeroyant - After their first meeting, Mylene could feel nothing but guilt. It was because of how he stood up for her that Mykaul got into trouble with his employer, and with Kahn'a, at the time. Since then, every time she ran into him, he had helped her in some way. She feels a lot of gratitude towards him and wishes she could return his favors one day.

Raikemi Maira - Raikemi is Mylene's friend, and mentor. Her words cut sometimes with their decisive manner, but Raikemi's imperious tone crystallized that Mylene would either do her best, or fail completely. It reminded her of the pressure she had been put under by her father, but by this time Mylene knew why she should take up the bow. She inspires Mylene greatly, evident by how wide-eyed the latter usually is when Raikemi is present. However, recent events had brought Mylene disappointment, leading her to believe that Raikemi may not be the absolute symbol of justice she thought her to be.

S'imba Tia - It feels like S'imba's gotten into a hole and the sides keep collapsing in on him, ever since the first time they met each other. Always injured, always recuperating from something after she saw him broken on the floor of the Quicksand. Though their relationship started off somewhat strained, she still did all she could for the young Miqo'te, even if he doesn't necessarily need her help. Over time, she's become protective of him, like a little brother she could never keep her eyes on, their relationship righting itself from the awful start that it had.

Sabathius Kath'Lani - Mylene feels great pride when he calls her his pledged sister. She carries a lot of respect for him and admires his gentle demeanor towards others. He tends to pat Mylene on the head, and as loved as she feels by it, it often embarrasses her like it would a child. She often recalls the words he'd said to her when she first joined the order; "There might come times where yer not goin' t' just be fishin'."

Shido Itsuka - Alongside Yonene Yone, Shido was the Miqo'te who'd stopped Mylene in the middle of the street, and managed to recruit her into The Tomial Order. He is gentle with Mylene, and had always defended her pacifist choices . He may not approve of the fact that she has begun to get into combat, but she sees his genuineness and believes him when he says that he considers her family, a sentiment she returns.

Sukina Cassady - Sukina's passionate manner towards combat used to intimidate Mylene, and her curiousity towards Mylene's reluctance to fight was interpreted as judgement by the latter. As time progressed, and as the two spent more time around one another, Mylene came to appreciate Sukina's spirit and deep care for the well being of her comrades, and now considers her a kind and trustworthy friend.

Yvelont Navarre - Mylene had not yet a chance to befriend any of the Elezen before she met Yvelont. Upon their first meeting, she couldn't even look at him straight after falling flat on her face, as she tripped on his longsword during a gathering at the Coffer and Coffin. She would run into the Elezen a few times after, and developed an unlikely friendship with him. Resembling an older brother figure, he was able to give Mylene comfort and sound advice, and even though their meetings are now rare, Mylene still looks fondly on their past conversations.
