Rio van Rosch

The Basics

Biographical

Family

  • Father: Perry van Rosch- Alive, living in La Noscea, works for the good of the Children of Steel.
  • Mother: Alya van Rosch- Alive, living in La Noscea, works for the good of the Children of Steel.

Appearance

  • Height: Slightly on the shorter side, roughly 5'2"
  • Weight: Roughly average.
  • Body: Rio is lithely muscled, due to the amount of physical activity that goes with her profession.
  • Hair: Dark red, with lighter red highlights. She usually wears it tied up in two long pigtails behind her head.
  • Eyes: Deep red, with a tinge of dark brown. She also has a pure white eye located on her forehead that she tends to comb her hair over to keep it hidden.
  • Skin: Somewhat tanned. She tends to tan easier than she burns. She also has freckles. Yes, she probably always had them. Shut up.
  • Clothing: Rio tends to wear lighter, more comfortable fabrics; oftentimes showing a lot of skin. This is due to her work environment normally being a stuffy, hot, airship engine room. She also usually has some sort of explosive or device stuffed into every nook and cranny of her outfit, and usually modifies them with extra straps or secret pockets to facilitate cramming various crystals and metal scraps that she can use to perform repairs and jury rig devices with on the go.
  • Voice: Rio's voice is very high pitched, to the point of being a little grating at times. She tends to speak animatedly, cracking friendly jokes, and dispensing pointed sass with the same amount of glee.

She sounds quite a bit like Fidget from Dust: An Elysian Tale- http://youtu.be/5MdtgOTl60o

Personality

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Personality: Rio has grown up quite a bit since she left Corvus Cinis before the Calamity to travel the skies with Misaio. Although she still tends to act brashly and doesn't always think through what she's doing, Rio now possesses the ability to examine the consequences of her actions. She also no longer has infinite emotional energy to march down and take no prisoners and slaughter everything between her and her goals.
That said, Rio still possesses a very energetic, childlike personality. She enjoys weaving words into sharp, playful insults; and tends to flirt with most girls and women she meets. She no longer seems like the dunce she used to portray, and although still pretty immature, a fair bit more of her perceptive mind shows through the bubbly facade.

Morals: Rio has a strong sense of right and wrong; though her morality tends to take a form that most Eorzeans would find alien. Rio is wholly devoted to those that she swears herself to, and would believe that she is justified in doing things like committing crimes and taking lives if it is the will of the one she swears herself to. (Namely, her captain.) The moral code of the Children of Steel would demand no less than complete obedience to the cause that they subscribe to. To give any less than that to your liege would be the true evil, to her.

Primary Weaponry

Auriga- A magitek pistol that serves as Rio's main armament. Designed by Rio herself, this specialized sidearm uses sprite cores to launch unaspected aether blasts in a manner similar to the "ruin" spell. It is also has a reinforced grip; which allows for Rio to incorporate the weapon into melee attacks as a blunt weapon.
Auriga Triage Mode- An attachment for Auriga which switches it from a damaging magic firearm into a quick-healing medical tool. This mode of Auriga uses aetheric energy to repair minor wounds in a manner similar to the spell "physick".

Combat

'
Marksmanship/ Martial Arts: Rio has been trained to handle all varieties of firearm when she was growing up in Garlemald. Her steady hands make her a deadly shot at almost any range, although she's the most comfortable using lighter guns at closer ranges. In melee range she can make use of her firearm as a deadly close-range blunt weapon. (Or bladed weapon, if a bayonet is equipped to it.) As she generally keeps a pistol on her person at all times, this tends to be her default fighting style.
Tribal Martial Style: A hand-to-hand style taught to Rio by Misaio during their travels. This style is the style that Rio falls back on if completely disarmed or when challenged to weaponless combat. It relies on agility and momentum to both dodge out of harm's way and to rain down blows upon a hapless, slower foe. Rio's already considerable strength puts a fair bit of "oomph" behind her punches and kicks as well and allows her to perform complicated acrobatic feats.

Weaknesses: Both of Rio's combat styles share one universal weakness: if her legs are disabled, she becomes basically helpless. She makes heavy use of her agility in both her Marksmanship and Tribal styles.

History

Before The Calamity

Chapter 0: Prologue

'Ancestry

Rio's family comes from a long line of Garlean Miqo'te going all the way back to when the former republic was barely formed. An offshoot clan of Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te was one of the first aggressors out of many to attack the fledgling nation. This clan, who's name has been lost to history, was soundly trounced by the formidable fighters of the republican guard; and their leaders were captured. So, in exchange for becoming one of the few allies of Garlemald, the Miqo'te would be allowed to live freely amongst them.
Over time, this Seeker of the Sun clan's tribal traditions were replaced by those of their Garlean allies, and they became a part of the republic. They cast off the name "Seekers of the Sun" and became Garlemald's own "Children of Steel"; sworn to serve the republic for the rest of their days, They took up traditionally Garlean names and traditions, and a few of them even rose into the nobility of the republic, and later the empire. The Rosch family was one of those families.

She's a Magitek Woman

Rio van Rosch was born to a pair of Imperial engineers, with her mother hailing from a prestigious house of Children of Steel Miqo'te known as the house of Rosch: and her father being another child of steel who's house name had been lost in the tribe's transition from savage tribals to civilized soldiers of the Empire. The two were wed by their coworkers in a small, abandoned airship hangar in the Bozja Citadel, and for a time, life was good, peaceful even. Perry and Alya carried about their work, toiling for the good of the Empire. After a time, Perry himself was even accepted into the house of Rosch, becoming Perry van Rosch.
And of course, as such things go, Alya eventually became pregnant by Perry and bore a single daughter, everyone's favorite Rio van Rosch. The small child was blessed, in that she had enough of the pure blood of the Empire to be born with a third eye upon her forehead, as all pureblooded Garelans have. Years passed uneventfully around the small family until the year of Ala Mihgo's fall, when they decided to return to the Rosch Family's seat of influence in Garlemald proper for the sake of young Rio's education.
Perry and Alya, being the team that they were, were brought on as engineers nearly directly under Cid nan Garlond, a minister of magitek in the capital city. Rio began attending a prestigious school, where she learned the various disciplines that any young Garlean of rank might learn. However, it was Rio's experiences outside her education that would set her course in life.
Having magiengineers as parents, Rio was exposed frequently to the art and science that is magitek. She found herself fascinated by all the strange and awe-inspiring creations her family had a hand in while working under Cid, and found a craving for knowledge awaken in her. She would locate books on magitek (small ones, she's only nine turns old at this point) and devour the information contained within. Instead of playing with friends like many children her age, Rio would accompany her parents to their work, watching from a safe distance and helping where she could. She met with Cid nan Garlond quite a bit during this time in her life, mainly because they just happened to be in the same place at the same time.
She was not, however, without friends. Her best friend, Gidget Throttle, shared her enthusiasm for magiengineering, and accompanied her on these trips to the workshops and hangars that she spent so much of her childhood in.

This Town is Falling Apart

Rio's education in both schooling and magitek continued for many years. The young Miqo'te experienced few troubles, and strife was a thing virtually unheard of. That is, of course, until the Meteor Project ended her happy days of innocent bliss. You see, within the Bozja Citadel lived the vast majority of the Children of Steel Miqo'te. The Rosch family was an oddity in that they preferred life in the capital over life among their fellows in the spiraling, labyrinthine halls and workshops of the citadel. And so, the day Dalamud turned red and vaporized the Bozja Citadel, the Children of Steel miqo'te became an endangered culture where seconds earlier they stood as a flourishing symbol of Garlean might. 70% of the population of the Children were reduced to smoke and ashes within 30 seconds of Dalamud's activation.
The instant that this tragic event took place, Ferro van Rosch, Rio's grandfather and the head of the Rosch family stormed to the imperial palace, demanding an explanation and upon receiving one, demanded that the project be abandoned. The Emperor shared his sentiments at the time, and the Meteor Project was abandoned.
After that event, life became tense around the Rosch household; but they continued to have faith in the Garlean Empire they had sworn themselves to. Rio continued her education, albeit with a lessened enthusiasm. She spent more time in the workshops than ever, throwing herself into her magitek education to avoid the pitiful stares and whispered words of her classmates and strangers on the street. It was around this time that Cid and his engineers left to form the Garlond Ironworks in Eorzea. Picking up a number of his projects, the Rosch family toiled on in the service of them Empire; they had sworn an oath, after all.

The Oathbreaker

Post Calamity

During the Events of A Realm Reborn

Rio suddenly reappeared roughly five years after the calamity at the Cold Moon Gala. Although she didn't end up as a Warrior of Light, she didn't speak of where she had departed to since the calamity happened. However, she did reunite with Alothia and the rest of Corvus Cinis, and rejoined the company the same day. When Lainseworth approached Corvus, offering a way to regain his voice, Rio participated in a raid into the Haukke Manor to fulfill the requirements to use the dark magic. Outside the manor, she was reunited with Misaio, her captain.

Additional Info

Relationships

The Desert Moogle Consortium

Misaio Imella- The individual closest to Rio before she went missing, Rio and Misaio are very close friends. Misaio captains the airship that Rio works on and Rio would follow her into the seven hells if need be. Rio has resumed her work as Misaio's second-in-command, following her orders to the letter. She's also smitten with the woman, and recently confessed as such to her. Although they maintain both their captain-subordinate relationship and their friendly relationship, Rio now makes a point to flirt with the woman whenever she sees an opportunity to.

Scarlet Willow- Another member of Misaio's crew. She thinks of the Roegadyn as a friend and admires her level headedness in a group where slightly off-the-rails individuals such as Misaio and herself tend to be the rule. Sometimes, she'll randomly appear behind the Roegadyn when she ventures outside of camp.

Lainseworth Ravencraft- One of Rio's close friends from before the Calamity; Rio is immensely fond of the little Lalafell. She tries to treat him with a measure of respect, given his position and talents as her coworker; but usually is reduced to high pitch squeals and headpats and hugs in his incredibly cute presence. Even having gained the ability to speak, Rio's condition when it comes to Lainse has hardly improved.

K'oriah Rahjeh- A young Miqo'te girl that Rio met in the company of Souyo. Rio has taken a shine to K'oriah, and tends to act like a big sister to her.

Corvus Cinis

Alothia Starkwood- Rio's boss in Corvus Cinis prior to her departure with Misaio. Rio is immensely loyal to Alothia even now, and would probably still make good on her promise to "melt anyone that hurts her." She was reunited with her after the Calamity and rejoined Alothia's company. Although she later departed Corvus once again, Rio still holds a healthy measure of respect for Alothia.

Lily Dawnsworn- The second-in-command of Corvus Cinis that Rio loves to tease. Although sometimes Lily can act cold to her, Rio presses on undaunted to make her as silly as the rest of the company. She likes to flirt with her, although she doesn't have much real interest in her romantically.

Vash Ashford- An employee of Corvus Cinis Rio met after the calamity. Rio's not quite sure what to make of him yet, but gauges him to be pretty harmless, at least. She's come to believe that the one thing that he does excel at is being a minion or henchman.

Eric Verus- An employee of Corvus Cinis that Rio met briefly during a tense encounter with Deirdre. After she found out about his background, she developed a measure of respect for him; to the point where she forged a gunblade for him to use against Souyo, which he promptly broke and lost in the snows of Coerthas. She's somewhat sore about that still.

Souyo Xander- A man who was corrupted by the power of a dark crystal and waged a private war against Corvus Cinis. Rio has a distaste and fear of this man and tends to tell him just that when in his company. She only addresses him with biting remarks and sarcasm, even when told by Misaio to be civil. The source of her distaste for him stemmed from a fear that he would steal Misaio from her and take her far away, destroying the magiengineer's way of life.

Others

Deirdre Ta'ea- A former Eorzean Guard member that Rio once served with. Given her propensity for stabbing people and generally threatening nature, Rio tends to be scared stiff of her. She is, in Rio's words, "A terrifying, horrible, super mean, stab-you-in-the-gut, jerk!".

Mtoto Wamoto- A Miqo'te who formerly lead the Eorzean Guard that Rio once joined. Although Rio was eventually discharged from the Guard, she retains a large amount of respect for the woman.

Paradyme Capellago- K'oriah's former boyfriend and a proficient black mage. Rio has difficulty getting along with this man. Most of their encounters thus far have been punctuated by bouts of casual violence on Rio's part. However, Rio finds it hard to truly hate him, and once carried him back to Camp Desert Moogle in order to perform first aid on him herself after he'd been impaled through the chest by a magic ice spike.
