Introduction to U’tano

Referred to in some circles as the “Weaver’s Daughter”, U’tano is an incessant wanderer – cheerful, mischievous, and mayhap a bit reckless. An adherent of Nymeia, her origins are largely a mystery.

From birth, U’tano was frequently left with strangers in new locations across Eorzea as her mother adventured, taking whatever odd jobs she encountered. Mother would introduce U’tano to a new caretaker and leave U’tano with an affectionate pat to her head, a stroke of her ears and a kiss blown back over her shoulder before passing out of sight. An indeterminate period of time would pass and Mother would return blowing U’tano a kiss from afar. With a pat to U’tano’s head and a stroke of her ears, Mother would take U’tano’s hand leading her onwards to their next destination without delay. Never time for farewells. Never a moment to stay.

Mayhap the clearest account of U’tano’s history available is found in the following excerpt from her journals:

Reflections on Father

As recently as the Sixth Astral Age, the Archons were a legend; a hidden mystery – fleeting, unseen. Such was Father. A myth. A shadow. A whispered dream. Perhaps because Mother rarely spoke of him, each incident sparkles in my memory like a precious, shining jewel.

Recalling their meeting, a restless wind tousles Mother’s fiery locks around her wistful countenance. Slowly, she reaches her right hand, fingers outstretched, to grasp the starlit sky.

“Just like your father…,” she breathes, “…a wandering wind, warm and enticing, gives shape and form to darkness so brilliant that my heart is moved.”

On another occasion, Mother shares, “U’tano, you are the song of the divine wind – a hymn of The Twelve – fate’s melody woven to the harmony held in a moment of time.”

Father, do you know? Am I a song of The Twelve? A miracle?

I stand transfixed, balanced between the radiant sun and twin moons; embraced by the warm, wandering wind and brilliant darkness. I am content to slumber, eyes open.

Years pass and the dance of celestial bodies distorts; frenzied and erratic. As the wind freezes and the darkness howls, I awaken to myself. Nymeia beckons me. I am the harmony held in a moment of time. I am fate's melody. I am the song of the divine wind.

The Seventh Umbral Age begins.

Appearance

Body:

U’tano is a shortie! According to average racial height expectations, mayhap she is not the absolute shortest Miqo’te, but mayhap she is the second shortest. She is lithe and agile, with surprising strength and athleticism for one with such a diminutive frame. U’tano’s skin tone is akin to cinnamon sticks or a mythical beverage called “caramel macchiato”. She has a black symbol on her back beneath her neck centered between her shoulder blades that darkens or disappears, as Nymeia weaves.

Face:

U’tano’s face is marked by symmetrical double-stripes of brown adorning each cheek. She has dichromatic eyes of pumpkin and teal rimmed by dark lashes and purple liner. An orange tattoo kisses her left cheek as if it were the trail of a tear left behind once wiped away and a small, circular red jewel is poised in the center of her forehead. A short, fine scar cuts across the bridge of her nose, bearing record to her first misadventures with a self-made bow where she nearly lost her face to incoming claws and fangs before a burnished Ash Axe saved her and drove the beast away. U’tano’s lips are glossy, a darker hue than her skin and stripes.

Hair and Tail:

U’tano’s hair is a blend of salmon and ginger; sun-touched orange red accented by golden yellow layers on head and tail. Modeling function as opposed to frivolity, she keeps her hair either tied up in two ponytails, bangs cut short and sides away to keep her vision clear, or down pulled back with a ribbon. Preferring pretty things, U’tano ties her hair with white ribbons; understated considering her usual color preferences, but easy to find or make again should they come undone, as Nymeia weaves.

Clothing and Accessories:

U’tano changes her clothing as often as she changes locations with a bias towards wearing whatever is most functional despite any discomfort it causes her related to partial nudity, or distasteful colors or patterns.

Resume

Skills:

Raised on the kindness of strangers, far from any markets, U’tano was taught to value self-sufficiency. As a fisherwoman and budding botanist, U’tano gathers what she needs and enjoys feasting on her fish even more than trading them for other goods and services. Nophica provides, as Nymeia weaves.
Martially, U’tano has become skilled in song, archery and the healing arts, finding these most useful in her wanderings, learning what she could from caretakers and others met, as Nymeia weaves.
Attracted to shiny things, U’tano spent hours watching goldsmiths at work until one offered her his tools and taught her the basics to making her own jewelry. She has since acquainted herself with the miner’s pickaxe, thrilled by the possibility of unearthing rare and precious treasures. Related to her standard for self-sufficiency, U’tano practices carpentry and leatherworking to keep both her bows and clothes mended.

Hobbies/Talents:

Relationships

The U Tribe:

While her name may indicate a relationship with the U tribe in the Sagoli Desert, U’tano was unaware of their existence until her involvement with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn led her to investigate an earth-shaking primal threat. Upon successfully gaining the U tribes’ trust, U’odh Nunh invited her to join his harem. U’tano declined.
Regarding her name, one theory is that Mother belonged to the U-tribe, and upheld generations of naming traditions despite her non-traditional mating. U’tano’s father is, on all accounts, a mystery.

Player Characters:

  • Ariel Madaellyn – U’tano’s favorite drinking friend, she met Ariel Madaellyn shortly after finding a crystal engraved with a small hand on her wanderings. Heeding a call for assistance that arose from the crystal, U’tano was led across Eorzea to Monument Tower and ultimately to meet a number of people including Ariel who had similar crystals in their possession.
  • Arky Mosuke - U's curiosity was first peaked by Arky as, in her own wanderings across Eorzea, she would often see him conversing with someone new in the various Adventurer's Guilds. Eventually she and Arky were introduced through a mutual acquaintance outside of the Quicksand. Despite the brevity of their interactions, U became firmly convinced that Arky is far deeper and more closed than his easy, flirtatious smile and highly social behavior might indicate. As Nymeia weaves, in wandering away and back again, U'tano stumbled upon the harrowing scene of Arky's death. With the aid of Altima Zeroblade, U'tano used her knowledge of archaic healing techniques to revive him, herself disappearing on the wind as Arky's breath returned. The event left a deep impression on U'tano.
  • Dav Davion – Dav smoothly flirted with U’tano, inviting her out for a drink as she argued with her retainer in Hawker’s Ally one afternoon. As alcohol rapidly leads U’tano to comatose sleep for many hours, she doesn’t recall much of their initial meeting beyond learning that Dav is well-acquainted with Ariel Madaellyn and connected to the Hands of the Twelve. With U’tano’s continued involvement with the Hands of the Twelve, she and Dav have had multiple adventures. She especially enjoys receiving flowers from Dav, which she will wind into her hair over her left ear.
  • Eadbhar Kilar – U’tano first encountered the Highlander Ead during an investigation of Haukke Manor. As Nymeia weaves, their paths have crossed repeatedly at various dungeons since. U’tano enjoys listening to Ead’s stories.
  • Haruki Aoyuki (alt) – A male Miqo’te employed as a bodyguard by the young Lalafel Zarara Zara. Immensely entertained by his reactions to the world and other people, Zara loans Ao’s services to U’tano, and others, having him perform odd jobs and general monster slaying from time-to-time.
  • Kage Kiryuu – U’tano’s favorite airship, she first met Kage at a beach party she attended in the Mist. She enjoys watching Kage’s love woes unfold, understanding Momodi’s delight in hearing similar tales.
  • Kerr V'yen – U’tano’s “Ash Axe”. The first Miqo’te beside Mother that U’tano spends time with in her youth, and the first male Miqo’te U’tano encounters. Others generally assume U’tano is several years younger than Kerr, although it is unknown whether or not this is truly the case. U’tano believes Kerr to be the ideal Miqo’te and uses what she knows of him to judge all things Miqo’te. Having learned basic combat and survival skills from him, U’tano seeks to surpass his strength and agility someday. More recently, U’tano re-encountered Kerr during a visit to the hotsprings in Camp Bronze Lake. Recognizing only his ashen tail after many years apart, U’tano accuses Kerr of stealing his tail from her Ash Axe. Before the evening ends, Kerr affixes a linkpearl to U’tano’s ear so she cannot fully disappear on him ever again.
  • M'dhori Rhea – A free-spirited Miqo’te U’tano met at Nymeia’s stone near Moraby Drydocks. They traveled together for several weeks until Mi wandered off to resume her own research. During their travels they became very close, developing a sister-like relationship.
  • Mithiria Deschain – U’tano can’t clearly recall meeting this enigmatic Hyur; likewise U’tano cannot recall a time when Mithiria was unknown to her. Mithiria is mayhap the individual most solidly etched into U’tano’s memory.
  • Natalie Mcbeef – A Sultansworn introduced to U’tano by Rexaius Thundersoul outside the Quicksand. Someone U’tano hopes to come to know more.
  • Railalis Nethikir – An awkward Maelstrom officer that has caught U’tano's attention. She alternates between protecting him, nagging him and pranking him because his reactions provide her with hours of amusement.
  • Rexaius Thundersoul – A silver-serpent tongued Hyur that U’tano met through her involvement with the Hand of the Twelve. He has a knack for interrupting her usual rhythm and keeping her on her toes and off-balance.

Nicknames:
Exacerbated by her transient nature, U’tano’s memory for specific individuals and their names is limited. Affectionately and energetically, U’tano nicknames most individuals that she interacts with on a highly irregular, but frequent in her own definition, basis. She typically finds shorter names are easier to remember and will shorten longer names or connect them to an idea, object or rhythmic sound.

Examples of shortened nicknames:

Examples of other nicknames:

Notable Minions, Mounts and other Critters

  • Lihtleita – A unicorn U’tano befriended in the North Shroud, she carries U’tano almost anywhere U’tano doesn’t want to walk herself

  • Leroy and Zaps – ‘Bunkles, emerald and topaz respectively

Tendencies

Notable Habits:

  • She refers to herself as “U”. She does not use “I” or “me” when she speaks.
  • She frequently closes her eyes, tilting her face up towards the sky and turning it into the wind or rain if there is any, her right arm reaching high with fingers outstretched. At this time, her body remains still save for the movement of her ears as she appears to be listening to… something
  • She taps her lips with her right forefinger when she is deep in thought.
  • She bites her lower lip when she is jealous.
  • Her tail lashes when she is happy, and when she is dreaming.
  • She lives, speaks and acts in the present; she’s not one to engage in conversations about her past or future, but she is happy to listen to whatever stories anyone else would like to share with her about themselves
  • She prefers sleeping outdoors to sleeping in cities and grumbles whenever she is forced to stay in an inn, finding the beds incredibly uncomfortable. Likewise, she prefers sleeping snuggled up to someone familiar for the added warmth and companionship.
  • She makes her own band-aids, infused with healing potions and restorative tinctures. She carries these in her satchel to aid friends suffering from physical or emotional wounds and damaging status effects. The band-aids vary in design and are brightly colored, often decorated with childlike drawings of nefarious Eorzean critters.
