Friends ♫ Mihro Tethra - Even though the two share a relationship of both friendship and business partners, the man is one of the most stubborn, hard headed Midlander that Menelwen has ever met. Always sure of himself, his word is final, which makes it hard to get expansions for the Bastards Honor tavern done. Or rather, it used to be hard. For as of thirteen moons ago, the man left the tavern in charge of the Elezen, which has always puzzled and concerned the woman. The man had lost one of the things that tied him to the world outside of Coerthas, and with the second thing now given up...Menel wonders if she will ever see the man again. ● Hachi Ten'ahn – The woman has proven her skill and spirit time and time again in the short time Menelwen has known her. A sharp, keen eye, the Miqo'te is quick to spot danger, or the nearest glass of ice cold milk. Past events have made it near impossible to keep track of the woman's whereabouts, and with more and more time slipping by, Menelwen is unsure if the two will ever cross paths again. ● Grey Everheart - Though as stubborn as a Tarbh Uisge, the Hyur has proven himself to be loyal to whatever cause he pushes himself towards. The two have shared a drink here and there, though that is normally due to Menelwen tending to some sort of bruise or cut the man earned from a recent scuffle. – ♫ Khy'zen Vashai [Deceased] - The two were not necessarily as close as two peas in a pod, but the man was a good and dear friend to Menelwen all the same. So when she heard of his passing, she could scare believe that the man she had shared drinks, laughs, and fair times with was...gone. It has been several moons since his death, and to this day, Menel still mourns, knowing she could have more to help the man if only he had asked. ♫ Excen Validus - The two met with both unusual and solemn circumstances, and though they are both civil to one another, it is sometimes difficult for Menel to get a read on the Hyur. Regardless of his quite disposition, the woman trusts the man, and hopes that the wounds he carries on his soul will some day heal. ♫ Nivaar Swann - A chance meeting had the gladiator and Elezen meeting at the Bastard Honor's old location within the Bronze Lake. A fierce and loyal man, Nivaar has proven time and time again to be a pleasure to talk to and a joy to be around. Because of the Hyur's extreme love for steamed carrots, Menelwen can no longer look at the vegetable without remembering the man with a smile on her face. ♫ Nylesa Tou - Of all of her friends, this firecracker of a Monk is, quite possibly, Menelwen's closest. With the ability to easily spice up an otherwise quiet evening, the pair have found themselves in numerous hilarious episodes of shenanigans. With the Hyur's insane love for the shakes and sandwiches Menelwen creates, it is sometimes easy to forget of just how dangerous Nylesa can be when. Bestowed a strong arm and faster wit, it is safely assured that Menel has no desire to ever cross the wrong path with the Hyur. ● Hiro Ayami - The two met though Nylesa and the Piquant Pumpkin Cafe Enterprise. Menelwen has gone to seek his counsel on several different issues, ranging from how to gently put down suitors to what she should do about Nylesa eating her sandwich and shake supplies overnight. They share a healthy relationship in that matter, as the man himself has welcome counsel from Menelwen as well, his own matters ranging from the strange to the not so obvious. Time and time again, the man has proved himself both a promising and trusting friend, and Menelwen is glad to have met him. ● Rhysati Lhea - If a word had to be picked to describe the Hyur, intriguing would be best suited. Level headed and blunt, Menelwen has never had to guess what this particular woman is thinking. Knowing so many who hide their true desires and feelings however, it is refreshing to know that if the Elezen ever needs a straight forward opinion on something, Rhysati is the woman to talk to. Also, she makes some damn amazing cookies. ♫ Deverell Jinx - With a warm, playful smile almost always on the mans face, the man is a pure pleasure to be around. The man rarely hides his true emotions, however when he does, it is never for long. He has come to Menelwen many, many times for both comfort and counsel, and the Elezen is glad to know that the man has so much trust in her. With every conversation and every moment spent with one another, Menel hopes that their bond will only grow stronger. ● Dresden Voltaire - Many experiences were made at the Piquant Pumpkin Cafe Enterprise, and one such experience introduced her to the fine fellow Dresden is. The man is half jester, half stone, as his mood can vary on a day to day basis. Knowing the reasons behind the mans different moods, Menelwen never presses while in public company, as she knows that, when the man is ready, he will seek her out to speak of his thoughts. The two have made many memories together, some more memorable than others, but it would be wrong to say that any of them were unimportant. ● Daghbheri Himalspyr - The two of them had once been more than close friends, though after a bout with the lighting Primal Ramuh, their romantic relationship ceased to exist. Needless to say, Dogberry's letter left her heart in pieces with the admission that he admired another. It will take many suns for her to fully heal, and as far as their friendship goes...the man left her when she was battered and bruised in more ways than one. It will take more than time for that trust to rebuild, though that does not mean that she would allow any harm to befall the Roegadyn. ♫ E'khei Balduin - When a relationship between two individuals starts out with talk of a Roegadyn being squished by a magitech, well, you can never be sure if you'll see the other again. Thankfully, in the case with E'khei, Menel's allies did not frighten the Miqo'te for long and the two have been able to feed their ever growing friendship. ♫ Alexander Stormwind - When the request to rid the realm of the primal Ifrit found itself on the Bastard's desk, Menelwen took the job herself. Her desire was to help the mercenary band dismiss Ifrit without the loss of life, however that want fell short when the battle came to a close and one of their own was tempered. Despite the Elezen being the one to take the life of the sole tempered member in the group, it may have been that which forged the growing friendship between Alexander and Menelwen. Doing what needed to be done, no matter the consequences, and then dealing with said consequences when the time called for it. Since that event, she has learned more about the man than he would probably desire, however she has promised her word to him that his secret will follow her to her grave, and that of anyone else who seeks to speak of it. ♫ Rhianna Oruissi - Rhianna and Menelwen have an odd sort of relationship, odd not meaning ill, but odd in the case that they have both saved the others life at one point in time. Menelwen saved Rhianna following their bout with the over-bearing primal Titan, and the Midlander returned the favor after Ramuh struck the Adder down and filled her with an unknown level of lightning aether. Their relationship has blossomed into a strong friendship, and even with the secrets that Menelwen holds of the other woman, she would not want to change anything. Show text Menelwen turned her head to look at the clock on the wall. How long had she been nursing her whiskey for now? Nylesa and Kaiten had gone to bed several hours ago, so with that in mind...it had, of course, been several hours. A sigh parted the Elezen's lips as she set the bottle down on the bar. She was far from sober, yet sleep still avoided her. Then again, Blake and Seth were both resting in the only Inn room they currently had, so she couldn't necessarily retreat to that room to rest. She blinked before grabbing the whiskey bottle again. Seth was here. Right. She groaned and rested her head back against the wine cupboard. Why had she ever taken this job? Did the information they have really mean that he could...he could find her again? Her lips kissed the top of the bottle as she lifted it to drink straight from it. Giving herself a hangover wasn't going to help the matter at hand, but it would at least numb her thoughts when she did manage to sleep, right? The harsh liquid jerked in her throat, and she coughed and pushed the bottle away from herself. A hand quickly found its way over her mouth as she fell into a coughing fit, for she didn't want to wake anyone who was sleeping peacefully. "B-Bloody.." She coughed the slur out before forcing herself to burp, it morphing into a belch. She slapped a hand over her mouth again, fearful that she had surely woken someone up with her nonsense. She remained that way for several seconds, her gaze pinned onto the door that lead to the hallway. When no creaking doors or footsteps echoed back to her, she relaxed and lowered her hand. "...Maybe I...I should s-shhit down.." She cringed as the words slurred past her lips. Yea, it was a good thing no one was around right now. Knowing that no one was going to suddenly appear, the woman turned around, bottle in hand, and made her way towards the hidden door. She lifted a hand up and pressed the faulty beam, and the wall in front of her stirred to life. It groaned softly as it turned, allowing her more than enough space to pass through, even in her drunken stupor. She had enough of a mind to remember to press the opposite switch to move the door back into place before she, slowly and carefully, stumbled her way down the steps. "Too many...flippin' freakin' shtairs.." She hiccuped, not bothering to cover her mouth now that she was on the lower floor. She moved away from the staircase and into the larger section of the basement. She didn't need to work on any projects in the crafting quarters, but even if she did...doing so while hammered as she was? Ha! Not even. Stumbling forward, she slowly made her way through the dark and to, what she hoped, was the fireplace. It was always colder down here, but that made sense. Barely anyone was ever down here, so... She grumbled to herself as she fought with the logs in the fireplace, adjusting them as best as she could in the darkness. The task had been completed by the Elezen on several occasions when the single Inn room, her room, was hosting a guest. But it seemed doing anything while half your body feels like whiskey was a grueling labor. Eventually, she managed to stack the logs appropriately and fetch a few fire shards from the nearby jar. Holding her hand out, she offered a trickle of aether to the brilliant crystals, and her offering seemed to please the jewels enough for them to catch. They licked at the logs, and heat washed over the woman. "Ah....shooo much better." Once she had warmed her hands back up, she stood up and turned towards one of the two couches. She made her way over to one of them and, grabbing the blanket folded on top of it, she sat down and covered herself up. Whiskey bottle still in hand, she lifted it up to her lips and took a small drink. Her gaze flickered around the room, watching the shadows dance from the flames warming light. A small smile curved her lips as she found her entertainment, and she lifted her bottle up as if to toast the shadows and their dance. The bottle soon met her lips again, however her smile fell as she found that it was empty. A disgruntled sound of displeasure left her as she lowered the bottle down to the tile. "Maybe...for the besht anyway." She muttered as she lowered herself down on the couch. She closed her eye, a slow sigh leaving her. The Hyur who had been standing next to her was...was now kneeling! Her eyes widened, a single hand going up to cover her mouth, concealing a gasp of surprise. The man licked his dry lips, and Menelwen wondered if the man’s feet were suddenly freezing. "We’ve...We’ve been together for..." No, it didn’t seem that they were the slightest bit cold at all. This was actually happening. She lowered herself down into a crouch in front of him and cupped his hands with both of her own. Her eyes shined with tears as she stared at the man in front of her. "For...for a while, yes." She finished for him with a nod. The man laughed softly, bowing his head as if in embarrassment. "Right, then. Ahem." He cleared his throat, and she couldn’t help but laugh again. Now who was the nervous one? "Menelwen Veara...would you do me...the pleasure of allowing me to take your hand?" Releasing his hands, she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. "Yes, yes! I would love to, Lufrid!" He embraced her then, cradling her like one would a precious vase. They remained there for a little while, laughing amongst themselves as the night slowly came upon them. "Well, this is..embarrassing.." Confused, Menelwen pulled back to look back at the man as he was patting his vest pocket. "I... I had a ring, but it's not...I must have left it in my cot by accident." A soft laugh left Menelwen's lips as she shook her head; "Don't worry about that for now, my love. For now, let us get out of this cold, yes?" The man nodded, his smile glowing in the gathering moonlight. Standing, they made their way through the Silver Bazaar together, hand in hand.. ................................................. "..Hng.." Why was everything so...cold? Menelwen shivered as she reached down to grab the blanket at her feet. Or rather, she tried to, but she quickly found herself unable to move her arm a mere few centimeters away from her body. She opened her eyes, but nothing but darkness greeted her. A lump formed in her throat and her heart began to race. What was going on? "H…Hello?" She shifted again, now aware that something was keeping her from moving freely. "Lu-Lufrid! Silver?!" Panic welled within the Elezen’s chest as she shifted back and forth, a feeble attempt to rid herself of her bindings. "Oh, look who finally woke up.." An eerie voice sounded to her right, though before she could react she felt a pair of frozen fingers gripping hr chin and jerking her head to the side. "Huh, so you are a knife ear…” Fear soon mingled with panic as her breathing quickened. What was going on? Who was this man? "Guess ol’ Cupid wasn’t lying after all. Gets to keep his tongue, yea?" The fingers released her, but only to shove her backwards. She hit something hard, wooden. Her head bounced against it, and she was seeing stars. "Oi! Don’t go bruising yourself, now! You’ll cause us to lose quite a few coins, knife ear." She shivered again, but she was certain it was no longer from the cold. "Now, stay put lass. Not that you can go anywhere, anyway.." The man sneered as he walked away, his heavy steps vibrating against the floor. "...Silver." The man’s name spilled past her trembling lips. So many questions spun through her head, but she knew she had to get out of...well, where ever she was, before she could get her answers. She shifted her weight, fighting against her bindings. The rough rope tore at her exposed skin, and she had to bit the inside of her cheek to keep from expressing her discomfort. "D-Don’t..." A new voice spoke out, this one softer. More...feminine. “They... They always come back, to check." Menelwen turned her head towards the voice. “What…what do you mean? Come back to check on what?” She asked quickly, the words spilling past her lips in a rushed whisper. "The...the cargo." Cargo? A sense of dread began to fill Menelwen. The woman’s next words were like a sword through her heart. "Us. You...aren’t the only slave on this ship." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Menelwen awoke with a start, her eye wide with terror as she shot up on the couch. Her hands quickly moved over her body, pinching, grabbing, checking for the invisible bindings that had pinned her in her sleep. She found none, but of course she didn't. It had been a dream, and nothing more. Still, remembering those events, even in the spotted detail, was....was....her stomach suddenly churned. Tearing the blanket completely off of herself, she bolted for the staircase and scrambled up to the kitchen, just about punching the switch to move the hidden doorway. As soon as she was in front of the sink, she hurled. The Elezen remained there, crouched over the small tub even after the contents of her stomach had been emptied. Stomach acid burned her throat, and it continued to for several minutes as she stood there, clutching the sink as she dry heaved. Once she was certain that she would no longer need the sink, she washed her mouth and rinsed the contents within the sink down the drain. Switching the water off, she turned around and, slowly, made her way back downstairs. How long were these...nightmares going to plague her? A hand found its way up to her head, and she groaned as she found a rats nest of hair. She must had been tossing and turning in her sleep. Safely next to the couch, Menelwen allowed herself to collapse back down onto the soft leather. "...W-Why?" Her voice cracked as she pulled the blanket over herself and curled up. She knew why that nightmare had returned. It was as if the men who had blackmailed her into this job were warning her of what could happen again if she messed up, if she failed her mission. They would contact the man that had broken her, torn her apart. Absentmindedly, her hand lifted to grasp her throat. Her fingers slid underneath the leather choker she always wore, grazing over the scar that wrapped around her neck. She shivered violently and removed her hand, closing her eye tightly. She wasn't sure if she would be able to sleep now, but she didn't want to touch that. Didn't want to...remember...that. Broken Wing Show text Now that she was alone within the bar, Menelwen just sort of...stared. Her gaze was locked onto the counter before her, and she seemed keen on ignoring the dirtied plates and glasses used by those that had been there just moments ago. There had been laughter, debates, solemn talks of life and death, but still company when she needed it. Though now with the small group gone, she was left to her own thoughts. She closed her single eye and swallowed hard. "..How's the Cap'n doing?" The Elezen whispered quietly, repeating Vash's words as she felt her eye begin to sting, and now that Rhysati was gone and far away from the Honor, she could not kid herself with the reason why. It was not an odd occurrence with the void that made her eye burn as it did now, and even if it was, it was the wrong one. Reopening her eye, she found her vision blurred, blinded by moisture. "..Warm in another's arms, that's how he's doing." Her fingers curled against the bar top, digits digging into her gloved palm. It wasn't enough that Dogberry had ended things between them, by letter no less, but he had gone and written to her that he also fancied another. Lifting her gaze up from the bar, she hopped over the counter and quickly ate up the distance between her and the table off in the corner. She grabbed the letter, snatching it up with little grace before spinning around and moving back to the bad. “You may not have gone down the unfaithful path…” She hissed as she slid over the counter again, being only slightly careful not to send any dirtied dishes flying off of it. “But you certainly held the door as you stared into its chambers.” She slammed the letter down on the bar and stared at it, her blurred vision making it hard for her to read what she already had read bells prior. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Wing, My darling, I'm writing to you because it is easier to say it in person, not just by virtue of what I have to say, but by the very way we appear to live our lives. We are like two ships passing at sea, and I do not feel this way of living is leading to a healthy relationship. I do not feel our relationship should continue as it is. It is perhaps best if we go our separate ways, at least in regards to our romance and intimacy, and find others better able to fit into our lives. The man couldn’t have ever told her in person, while she was resting in his bloody room! Her fingers wrapped themselves around tumbler and she lifted her arm, spun around, and…chucked the damn thing across the room. It was no match for the hearty wooden walls, as it shattered upon impact. As it exploded, she sank down and folded her arms along the bar, her head falling into them. She knew she was being childish, but by the gods, she couldn’t help it. That man, her Bear, had known her better than most did. Or so she had thought he did, for he claimed to know next to nothing about her. Her body trembled. Why had he brought up his child to her then? Why, then, did he bring up that he would like her to be like a mother to his son? A broken sob parted her lips as she slammed her fist down along the bar. Apparently the only light the man had seen in her was the one he held until he saw someone else he fancied. "Damn you...Dogberry.." She whispered as tears streaked down her right cheek. Somehow she had kept herself from crying earlier, back when she first read the letter. Even as she sat on his bed, rested in his room, she had not cried. She had simply gathered up what small belongings she had there and left, leaving neither word nor trace of where she had gone. Perhaps it had been finding Shiroro in Gridania that kept the Elezen from breaking down, forcing her to keep up her happy façade to avoid troubling the young Lalafell. But, now that she was alone… She sunk further to the ground, wrapping her arms around herself as she curled up on the wooden floor. So much, so much had she given. Her word of promise to be faithful, to him and to his allies, aiding them in their endeavors to further their knowledge on the primals. She had taken up both steel and tome to guard them as they battled, even extending her patrols and stay in Coerthas and the eastern most shroud to keep tabs on the beast men, heretics, the small patrols of Garlean invaders… "Was none of it enough?" Had she not been enough? She chocked on her sobs, words breaking past her lips as she angrily wiped at her eye. She had fought for that man, given him...everything. Her thoughts, her fears, her strengths, her body, her love, almost her life. Her entire form shook violently as she remembered the encounter with the lightning primal. Perhaps it had been her garb, bearing the crest and symbol of the Twin Adders, which had sought out his attention. Perhaps that was why every time Ramuh called down the heavens he struck her. Her fingers curled against the stained wood. Not once, not twice, not even thrice....but four times he struck her, paralyzing her so she was unable to move, and that last time... So much pain, so much agony, and though the event had happened but a fortnight ago, all of it was now swarming her again. Every fiber of her being cried out as if she were being struck. Her throat tightened, her muscles convulsed. It had happened so long ago, yet as she cried she could feel the primals aether eating away at her even now. Eventually she would gather herself up and clean up the bar, clean up the mess on the wall. Eventually she would wipe away those painful tears and paint on her usual pleasant smile. But for tonight? Tonight, she would allow herself this moment; this time she would allow herself to be weak. For she had lost the only person who she thought would be there forever. He claimed to want to be friends, and friends they might be in the future, but for now....for now, Menelwen just needed to cry.
