History

It all started when his mother had him so many years back, when life was still good. Of course, good as good can be when your father leaves before you were even born. His mother, Rachel Steel, stumbled blindly trying to raise her son on her own. That is until the rest of her crew caught wind of what happened to their captain and suddenly the family swelled in size. Everyone took turns looking after little Kurt, from her first mate to the Roe in charge of scrubbing the deck. It wasn't a formal family but it was still a proper one. Grounded pirates playing at being parents and caretakers.

They pooled together the accumulated loot over their couple decades of piracy and managed to get their captain a decent home in Wineport no less, knowing their captain's discerning tongue for the finer things of life. It was rare but Rachel Steel instilled that kind of loyalty in the men and woman who once sailed and pillaged with her and not that they had anything better to do when Rachel's lover and Kurt's father decided to try and sink her ship. Nasty betrayal that but she tried her damnedest not to let that get in the way of being a mother. Making sure to avoid any mention of her son's father.

Of course, five years later when life had stabilized, his mother looked into teaching him how to swing an axe, just like she did. Started small, just a blunt hatchet and some basic movements he followed rigorously throughout his life. Soon her young son became the bane of lumber around Wineport. Five years after she taught him how to use an axe, she looked into her old contacts to see if there was someone she could ask to help her son learn to at least read and write basic things. She found someone, it went on for the three or so years until that said tutor decided to take a coeurl claw to the face. Still what Kurt managed to pick up was enough for him to be at least passable for the next stage in her plans for him.

Six years later, months after his 21st name day, she booted him out of the house and paid for a ticket straight to Limsa Lominsa. She told him to seek out Wyrnzoen since it was past time for him to learn how to use the axe beyond cleaving defenseless pieces of wood. Except when he arrived at Limsa Lominsa a yellowjacket named Rhyssfloh got to him first and sent him straight to Baderon and he registered himself as an adventurer before heading over to the Marauder's Guild and further his axe training. Of course his mother was disappointed when word reached her of what happened to her son. He was supposed to be a pirate captaining his own ship like she did, not be an adventurer exploring Eorzea and lending his axe to the poor people and live in poverty.

Flash forward weeks later, after a particularly nasty contract in Copperbell Mines, he had met Nako'li Chalahko. An officer in the flames looking to branch into the realm of Ul'dah's markets and businesses. Kurt would like to believe he is the first hire of Nako'li as he agreed to work for the miqo'te on the spot. After all the benefits were attractive and Nako'li had said that it won't interfere much with his adventuring go so far as to say it might even enhance the experience. Delving into ruins and ancient sites to spots that need cleaning by way of fire or steel, except that this time there was a bigger goal to work toward now and Kurt would no longer want for gil to spend on maintaining or updating his equipment.

Flash forward more weeks later, after following a dead end lead that led him to the Wanderer's Palace, his life decided to turn upside down on him. The turn trip saw him shanked a few times by a squad of tonberries. As if that wasn't enough a particularly large skeleton with a particularly large weapon smashed him into a weak section of the walls, smashing against a rack of potions. With the expedition's alchemist and conjurer unable to aid him, he grabbed for one of the potions, reminiscent of the elixirs sold by the artisans in Mor Dhona, uncapped the liquid and downed the potion. Except it did nothing and he was still bleeding and the pain was still there. The accompanying thaumaturge managed to dispel the possessed skeleton. However, later on the miqo'te they called healer had revealed to Kurt what he had drank. It surely wasn't an elixir according to the alchemist despite it looking similar.

He never slept for four days, just enough for him to attend the Vorgan Wedding before passing out after the after wedding.

Enter Katarina Steel, as proposed by her boss, Nako'li. Kat Steel, as shortened by herself.

After much effort and no small shortage of luck, he's back to where he was but takes it upon himself to apologize to the people he thinks he's wronged while he was still Kat.

Personality

He has it in his head to do the right thing regardless of how hard it may be. People need help and he is there precisely to help them which makes him overtax himself and be in a nearly constant state of fatigue most of the time. On a whole, he a passive yes man, rationalizing that all it's just another learning experience for him and maybe even let loose a bit of steam. This also leads him to do menial tasks for others and general promotes laziness in other people, what with the "Hey, I can help and you can adjust the price!" sign on his head going about the various menial or dangerous tasks dumped on his lap. Granted he's been trying to change that little facet of his life.

Of course there are still things he won't do and thing's he'll instantly jump on, like a plate of very spicy marmot. On subject of food, he's a gluttonous carnivore with a tongue for spices. Added points if it'll make him sweat. Gluttonous just like his outlook on his (as of now nonexistent) bruises and scars. Considering each of them a medal of a badge that meant he took a hit meant for someone prettier than him, male or female. It is an honor for him to defend those relying on him.

In a social setting, he usually keeps to herself unless something catches his eye. To which he'll approach it and learn more. He's not afraid to initiate a conversation, and can usually carry it too. He address people in a polite tone with a 'sir' or 'miss, an anomaly given his background. Of course, he's a bit more open about himself when among his friends, possibly to Adeya's chagrin whenever she hears something stupid or embarrassing Kurt or Kat may have done. He's also liable to poke fun at people or say inappropriate things given an opening.
