History
Summary:
Kylin grew up as an only child under his father's care, originally named "Castiel." He would later change his name to his mother's preferred name, Kylin, after discovering her diary. His mother died giving birth to him due to extensive mana poisoning that came as a result of her being exposed to toxins so she'd not expose certain family secrets of House Mavanix. This poisoning extended to Kylin upon birth, forcing him to take daily doses of an ether-like medication for the rest of his life. Kylin grew up under House Mavanix, not realizing until later in his life that he and his father weren't of the Mavanix family at all, but of the Felstar family. He attended private school until his teenage years, when he insisted for a more public life much to his father’s dismay.
His public school life eventually led him to a confrontation with Myra Wes, who saw great talent in the youth and attempted to pry him away from what she perceived an overprotective and dangerous father. Cartius, furious with this, used his power and influence to eventually drive Myra out of Ul'dah before she could turn his only son against him.
After school, Kylin focused largely on the family business and preparing to take over for his father while still indulging in numerous pleasures presented to him. He went to great lengths to please Cartius, though he felt that he often fell short. One of his assignments was acting as a Premier of the Outer Heaven mercenary organization. Following the organization's battle with the breakaway Mavanix clan, Decretum Umbra, Cartius removed his resources from the organization and allowed it to plunge into disarray. The relationship between Cartius and Kylin began to become strained around this time. Kylin rebelled in various manners as a result. Cartius appeared to be murdered within a couple moons of these events.
After the supposed death of his father, Kylin witnessed the gradual destruction of House Mavanix. Family members perished and house resources were ripped asunder. Eventually, it was revealed that Cartius was in fact alive and responsible for all of the events related to the house's fall (though he set events up to have someone else officially take the fall for the destruction). Cartius revealed himself as a Felstar, not a Mavanix. Overwhelmed at his father still being alive and horrified by the truths revealed about House Mavanix's atrocities against himself and his mother, Kylin sided with his father and joined him in Ishgard with House Felstar, his real family.
Following the tragic events at the Full Cold Moon gala, Cartius quickly ordered all of House Felstar to board their private ship and left Eorzea with a comatose Kylin. Two weeks following Dalamud's impact, Kylin awoke and quickly returned to Eorzea in search of his lover, Gerik Aston. Believing Gerik to be dead, Kylin turned his grief and rage against his father and abandoned House Felstar for almost a full cycle. Elza Ashfen, at the request of Cartius, managed to eventually persuade her brother to return to House Felstar. Kylin in turn did the same by bringing a very much alive Seraphine back into the family.
Since then, Kylin has slowly reintegrated himself back into the family after persuading Cartius to return to Ul'dah. Together with his sisters and father, he has helped to slowly forge a new name for the previously unknown House Felstar in Ul'dah. He has also spent the past several cycles in intense training.
Order of the Stormguard:

Kylin joined the Stormguard approximately 6 years past for the sole purpose of getting his grasp on the myterious artifact they guarded. Cartius, via a hired goon, attempted to gain the Stormguard's secrets years prior to this but failed. Kylin thus saw an opportunity to truly prove himself to his father by finishing what he was unable to do. Infiltrating his way into their ranks through manipulation tactics, Kylin sought out and found a Stormguard member. Due to an attack on the Stormguard base, the cultist was dying and sputtering nonsense. Kylin, having slipped past the medics, managed to use the opportunity to procure information about the group's leadership and then used that information to lie his way into the group's center via Keir Loell. As such, the young hyur was initiated into the group and obtained his tattoo, though he was certainly not fond of the tattoo concept at first.
As Kylin grew ever closer to achieving his objective, Keir became increasingly suspicious of him. The two shared increased tension between one another, though Keir remained loyal to Kylin, prompting the hyur himself to return the loyalty and rethink his plan. Seraphine's joining of the Stormguard and her devote loyalty later prompted Kylin to abandon his plans entirely.
The Stormguard would later unravel when Keir left Eorzea following another attack on the group from its mysterious enemies. Several other members of the Guard vanished, though Keir attempted to pick up the pieces of the group prior to his leaving. Ultimately, Seraphine took up Keir's work and tried to salvage the group before she too was attacked and initially believed to be murdered by an unknown assailant. During Seraphine's short reign, she elevated Kylin to High Priest and thus allowed him access to the Stormguard secrets. Grieving over what he believed to be the loss of his sister, Kylin ended up sealing a number of the Stormguard artifacts and tomes in a secret chamber sealed through magic in order to ensure nobody could ever access anything. He continued to carry on his tattoo, though the Stormguard was clearly dead.
Outer Heaven:

Following the Stormguard's initial demise (and long prior to Seraphine's supposed death), the mercenary organization known as Outer Heaven was formed by a coalition of nobles. Cartius Mavanix (now Felstar), Rebecca Winter, and Batgroob Dok all came together for the massive project. Through Seraphine, they also recruited Eva Ianeira to round out the group in its entirety. They each led a single "pillar" of the organization which comprised of: Avalon, Rainfall, Lefein, and Arcadia. Avalon oversaw all aspects related to magic, magical training, and artifacts. Rainfall oversaw provision and crafting needs of the group. Lefein oversaw the physical training of the group as well as special operations. Arcadia handled all public and internal relations. Cartius appointed Kylin to oversee Avalon and Rebecca appointed Seraphine to oversee Arcadia. Batgroob and Eva oversaw their own pillars (Lefein and Rainfall, respectively).
A booming success, the organization employed a number of skilled mercenaries. A number of profitable missions were handed out over the approximately six moons of the group's existence. During the group's reign, Kylin and Seraphine would come face to face with Decretum Umbra, a powerful and old society that split off from House Mavanix several generations ago and now wanted to reclaim their supposed birthright. In their first battle against seeress Ekidnah Mavanix, Kylin was nearly killed via a magical trap that he unintentionally set off. Shortly after, when Outer Heaven confrtonted Ekidnah, she revealed Seraphine to be Cartius's daughter, hidden by Rebecca Winter all these years. When Cartius finally learned this truth, he became furious at Rebecca for hiding his daughter from him. Kylin and Seraphine would quickly bond as brother and sister upon this revelation, made easier by their past friendship.
More battles followed, including a battle with magician Marvani Mavanix who trapped the group in a powerful "World of Illusions" spell where everyone had to face their deepest fears in the form of a deadly illusion. Marvani would attempt the spell again later, trying to this time pit the group against one another with his illusions before he was killed by Keir Loell. Ekidnah would later attack the group once more and show them grisly futures each individual would have if they continued on their path. Tragically, a few of the futures did actually come to pass. Another member of Decretum Umbra, Barbas Mavanix, attacked Cartius at his home only be slain by the powerful house leader. Lemdarva Mavanix, in a last ditch effort, battled Outer Heaven with help from a powerful undead minion only to be killed in battle (or so everyone thought). Immediately after, the group was faced with the creator of Decretum Umbra, Carmilla Mavanix, who nearly destroyed the entire group in her quest to obtain the Soulfire Apparatus artifact from House Mavanix. She was ultimately destroyed by Seraphine thanks to a pendant she obtained from Cartius.
Following Decretum Umbra's fall, Cartius ordered Kylin and Avalon to withdraw from the organization. Outer Heaven began to quickly crumble after this until there was nothing left of it. Kylin became furious at his father for the withdrawal of support and began to rebel against Cartius in a number of ways.
Archavalon:
Show text
As Kylin continued to rebel against his father, tragedy would strike. The Mavanix Mansion was attacked by unknown intruders and Cartius was killed in the attack (or so it was setup to look as such). Kylin was devastated and began to quickly regret his rebellion against his father. After the shock wore off, Cartius's will was revealed and named Elza Ashfen, a previously unknown daughter of the patriarch's, the successor to house leadership. Though Elza was reluctant to lead the house at first, she ultimately did so out of respect for her father's last wishes. Kylin bonded quickly with his newly discovered sister, fine with the fact that Cartius didn't leave the responsibilities of the house on him. Elza restructured Avalon and renamed it Archavalon. The noble house's primary arm seemed to be on the right path and Kylin agreed to help Elza in her goals.
What followed was tragedy after tragedy. House Mavanix was slowly ripped asunder from an unknown enemy, each of its resources carefully torn apart and family members massacred one after another. The Mavanix Academy was first to fall after scandals involving its underground labs were revealed. After that, Seraphine was believed to have been murdered, causing Kylin a tremendous amount of grief and nearly nobody to turn to. Margarah, the house's fashion and merchant line, collapsed next after Nina and Kalara Mavanix were killed while on an airship (the Scarlet Seraph). On the same horrific night, almost the entirety of House Mavanix was wiped out during a family meeting. Family members murdered included Balthazor Mavanix, Lavina Mavanix, Synthia Mavanix, as well as the husbands of Nina and Kalara (Cort and William). This effectively left only Kylin, Elza, Ekidnah, and Xaliel as the only Mavanix members left. Kylin became increasingly terrified for his life, still with nobody to turn to for real help. Elza hired mercenaries to protect the family and investigate the tragedies. Mercenaries included Corvus Cinis, Shimmersong, and some freelance mercs (including some from Everwatch).
The Avalon Templars fell next when Vertigo assassinated its leader (Kiba Pargux) in front of the hired mercenaries and deceived them into severing an alliance the house had with GIN (a Goblin Information Network). Ekidnah was murdered next, leaving Kylin increasingly frightened for his future. Finally, the remainder of Archavalon would fall with the destruction of the Mavanix Mansion during a deadly battle with summoned Mavanix spirits. Xaliel Mavanix was also killed during this battle, becoming the final true blooded Mavanix to perish. Kylin ended up being briefly possessed by the spirit of House Mavanix founder, Joachim Mavanix, when the Soulfire Apparatus was activated in this battle due to the manipulations of Vertigo. He was ultimately saved by the mercenaries in Coerthas.
Following this, the group of mercenaries would discover the culprit behind everything: Cartius Felstar. Cartius revealed that he faked his death and orchestrated the fall of House Mavanix as an act of revenge for what the house secretly did to him and his family years ago. Documents were sent to Ul'dahn officials to reveal that Elza and Kylin weren't actually Mavanixs, thus voiding Cartius's previous will. Officials confiscated all remaining property of the Mavanix family, effetively wiping clean all remnants of the house. Kylin, overcome with relief at his father being alive, joined Cartius and House Felstar in Isghard whereas Elza stole the Scarlet Siren ship from the house and vanished.
Shimmersong:

After the fall of House Mavanix, Kylin applied to join the Shimmersong mercenary company. The hyur felt guilty over the group being manipulated by his father and wished to make amends. Following a difficult barrage of questions from Shara Seleni, Yssen Van, and Ariel Madaellyn, Kylin was eventually allowed into the group, though somewhat reluctantly. Tensions elevated for a bit between Kylin and Ariel/Yssen.
It was around this time that Kylin met Gerik Aston, though the highlander had been involved in recent missions with the Mavanix investigations. The two quickly became close friends almost instantly. As time passed, they grew closer than ever until Kylin was persuaded by his stepmother, Nefron Felstar, to confess his feelings. In a romantic gesture, Kylin arranged a picnic in Gridania and with the help of faithful butler, Reeve, had fireworks set off into the sky directly above the two. Kylin confessed his feelings and kissed Gerik, who returned the kiss and confessed his own feelings. The two, living together in Elza's old Gridanian cabin, began a short-lived and intense relationship. The relationship hit several bumps as a result of Deirdre Ta'ea's indirect (and sometimes direct) intervention.
The Full Cold Moon gala, organized by Nefron Felstar, would be the beginning of the end of this short-lived chapter of Kylin's. Following an initial good time, a meteor slammed into the gala site and caused intense destruction and death in the immediate area. The pressure from the meteor then caused the aether beneath to become chaotic, preventing safe teleportation and ripping the ground asunder before sucking up numerous adventurers in the aether explosion. Kylin was one of the adventurers sucked into the aether and disappeared, believed to be dead by many. In reality, he was teleported out into Coerthas in an unconscious state. Cartius found his comatose son and quickly took him and House Felstar away from Eorzea to escape the ensuing madness. Kylin remained comatose for nearly two moons before awakening and attempting to find Gerik, with no luck. Assuming Gerik dead, and having lost all of his pearls in the gala's chaos, Kylin was left with no choice but to attempt moving on.
Aftermath:
Show text
Enraged at his father for taking him away from Eorzea, Kylin disowned Cartius and moved back to Ul'dah after the Dalamud incidents. He remained at an inn room for numerous moons, where he often bedded countless men and women that he picked up from the pubs. Kylin spiraled into a depression of sorts, drinking constantly and living off family money he took with him. He ignored the pleas of his father to return to the family, and even shrugged off numerous approaches from trusted staff members Vertigo and Reeve. Eventually, Kylin was approached by his sister Elza, who had been sought after by Cartius and was persuaded to rejoin House Felstar. Overjoyed at Elza being safe and sound after all this time, it took little effort for the sister to nudge Kylin back into the family fold.
Kylin eventually forgave Cartius and began to work in rebuilding House Felstar by taking up various projects. The young man would in time take over numerous excavation projects and exhibit projects for the Avalon Heritage Museum after Cartius reacquired that old asset from the now deceased House Mavanix. He would also move back into the new Felstar Manor in Ul'dah. Elza remained his confidant for awhile before Kylin started seeing a professional counselor to deal with the still lingering emotional trauma of losing Gerik, Seraphine, and the knowledge of House Mavanix's destruction at Cartius's hands.
At some point, Elza set Kylin up with a blind date that turned into a serious relationship. The relationship would turn sour over time, when Kylin's paranoia, jealousy, and manipulations caused it to implode. Depression seized the young man again for a brief time before he began to place all of his attention strictly into work related matters for House Felstar.
Kylin has also spent a significant portion of his down time conducting heavy physical training, while still attempting to keep up with his magical training when he could fit it in. As a result from his extensive training with Vertigo, his physical build has increased noticeably and his skill with swords and daggers has also become significantly better.
Personality
Fears: Disappointing his father/family, being alone.
Talents: Talented user of magic, including advanced concepts such as astral projection. Educated in a variety of topics, though he’s especially knowledgeable on magical artifacts. He's also become increasingly skilled in swordplay/daggers, though that skill still pales in comparison to his magical aptitude. He's also been known to charm his way out of a number of situations ever since he was a child.
Likes: Kylin likes to read and research magical related topics in his spare time, though he also likes to exercise frequently as to not fall out of shape. His favorite book, Winds of Ascension, written by Ovram Mendula, is hailed as a literary masterpiece and was even made into a play.
Dislikes: Competition, things not going as planned.
Traits: Kylin comes off as charming most of the time but is in actuality quite manipulative. He’s constantly determined to prove himself to his family and does whatever necessary, using whomever necessary, to achieve his goals. Some would call him overconfident, sometimes intimidating, and spoiled to an extent. He's also very easy to make jealous or possessive and can be driven to manipulative actions when he feels threatened in any form. He does however show a great deal of passion and aggression when it comes to reaching a goal.
Sexuality: Kylin mostly swings both ways when it comes to romantic related matters, with a much higher tendency to go for males before females. When it comes to females, he prefers strong-willed, independent, and classy women. When it comes to men, he has a somewhat fatal and near instant attraction to the 'white knight' type of guy. He is most attracted to hyurs, followed by miqo'te, and sometimes elezen. He has no attraction to lalafells or roegadyn, regardless of gender.
Affiliations
Family
- Mother: Sophia Nox Mavanix (deceased), Nefron Felstar (Stepmother)
- Other: Islude Felstar (Uncle)
Felstar Staff
- Bodyguard/informant: Vertigo is the primary bodyguard and informant for House Felstar and is most often seen in the company of Cartius himself. The miqo'te is never seen in public without a golden mask, allowing her to remain a mystery to potential enemies and thus enabling her to go undercover with ease on various missions by simply removing the mask and dressing differently. Originally brought into the family by chance, Vertigo ended up saving Kylin when he was a child and thus gained the trust and gratitude of Cartius. She has worked for the family since, feeling that it gives her purpose in her life. She often views herself as Kylin's unofficial mother, and the feeling is usually shared with both Kylin and Cartius.
- Butler: Reeve Belacro originally served the Mavanix family for two generations. After the house of Mavanix fell, he joined House Felstar at Kylin's request. As the mansion's head butler, he has access to a plethora of family secrets. His loyalty has never been questioned though. He wouldn't hesitate to bend the truth for the sake of protecting the family, despite his strong moral values. The older hyur is known to be a powerful asset to House Felstar.
Associations
- Deirdre Ta'ea: Kylin's few run-ins with Deirdre always left him disliking the woman more and more. He often viewed her as a threat to his relationship with Gerik due to her constant appearances and her ability to easily influence the highlander. He lost all contact with the elezen after the Full Cold Moon events.
- Gerik Aston: Kylin's first real romantic relationship was with this upbeat highlander. Their relationship was very short-lived, lasting only a couple moons. Despite the short-lived nature of the relationship, it was quite intense and its abrupt end nearly shattered Kylin. Their relationship ended suddenly 5 years ago at the Full Cold Moon gala when Kylin was struck by an explosion of aether and disappeared, believed to be dead. Kylin later tried to seek out Gerik but had no luck, and assumed his lover to be dead.
- Eva Ianeira: Having met Eva during Outer Heaven's formation, the hyur quickly grew to like the woman. She was always kind to him and yet remained a seemingly strong-willed persona. They fell out of contact with one another after the mercenary group fell apart, though she eventually gave him a Crystalline pearl. He has since lost the pearl during the Full Cold Moon events.
Other Notes
The Rumor Mill
- Common Rumors (Easily overheard):
- "Late at night, you can sometimes see prostitutes--female and male alike--enter or leave the Felstar Manor. Pleasure is certainly one thing that guy gets plenty of. Has he ever had a real relationship?"
- "His favorite author is Ovram Mendula. I haven't read any of his work myself, but I may eventually see the play adapted by one of his writings!"
- "His jealousy has no bounds. If he feels a friendship is threatened, he'll go right into competitive mode. And a Felstar in competitive mode is never a good thing."
- Moderate Rumors (Moderately difficult to overhear):
- "I hear the Felstar heir isn't as cool-headed as he'd like people to think. Sure, in public he can keep his cool. But in private? I hear he's an emotional wreck. Then again, can't blame him considering all the pressure and concealed family issues."
- "People whisper that his dad was actually responsible for all the atrocities against House Mavanix years ago and merely set up someone else to take the fall. Do you think Kylin was in on the whole thing as well?"
- "That family has so much drama all the time. It's amazing how loyal they remain to one another despite everything! I'm kinda jealous of such a bond."
- Rare Rumors (Very difficult to overhear):
- "He supposedly has to take some kind of ether-like medication daily for the rest of his life. They try to hide it up but the alchemists whisper aplenty. Wonder what's wrong with him..."
- "I hear that tattoo on his back is a remnant of his involvement with some mysterious cult!"
