Yssen Van is a particularly elusive, razor tongued, Duskwight rogue. He delights in drinking, stealing, swindling, gambling, and (as he puts it) games of all kinds. To most he is mysterious, to some he is kind, to others cold, violently opposed to a few, and to the rest he seems completely indifferent. The only constant seems to be that there is no constant. This, coupled with the fact that he is notoriously deceptive and secretive, leads people to think that his motives are questionable at best, and downright sinister at worst. That seems to be just how he likes it. One fact is certain. There is something hidden behind his yellow-gold eyes and devil may care grin.

History

There are very few confirmed details about Yssen Van's past. It is known that he was active as a thief in Ul'dah about nine years before the Dalamud Impact Event, and that he joined the mercenary company Shimmer Song at some point in the year leading up to the impact. He was even a member of the Immortal Flames for a time. He resigned his commission in particularly spectacular fashion, however. Something about him violently disagreeing with some decision some Immortal Flame officers made. Post impact, he seems to fallen back on the thieving and banditry for which he and his kind are known. He also seems to have become more and more reclusive and withdrawn in the years since the impact. Very few have met with him in person, even those that have claimed to carry out raids on his behalf say he only communicates in missives or through his adopted daughter, Hope. The fact that a Vengeance Order for the murder of an Ul'dahn merchant known as Radill remains active is the most commonly accepted reason for his staying away from the world. Yssen's current whereabouts are unknown, and the raids he has planned and executed have been all over Eorzea.

Since his capture at the hands of Deirdre Ta'ea (who was hired to do so by Zaralette Valeneaux), it has been revealed that Yssen is one of the Seven Devils. In specific, he is the Seventh Devil with the code name of The Hellfire. Yssen himself has not been seen since his escape from the Valeneaux, but rumor persist that the Hellfire's handy work has been seen in Coerthas and Ul'dah. With the revelation that Yssen is a potent Thaumaturge Assassin, the Thaumatuge's Guild has formally removed their previous vengeance order. The guild now opts to hunt him down as the would any other rogue Thaumaturge. The Valeneaux also list his re-capture as a priority, but seem to have focused their efforts on eliminating the bandit problems in the Black Shroud. Yssen's current location and activities remain unknown.

Family

Yssen's parentage is unknown. He IS known to have one sibling, Ysa Van. He has also adopted a young Midlander girl called Hope as his daughter and protege.

Ysa Van: - Yssen's twin sister, and a now known member of a group of assassins known as the Seven Devils. Specifically, she is the Fifth Devil and known by the code name "The Razor." Her relationship with her brother can at best be called volatile, and at worst completely homicidal. Some moment in the past put the two twins at each other's throats. While the nature of what happened is unclear, the results are that Ysa seems to doggedly pursue her brother, leaving a bloody train in her wake. Their last confrontation, which began with her murder of a Mineral Concern dancer, supposedly ended with Yssen being critically injured and near death weeks before Dalamud's impact. Ysa has not been seen in five cycles.
Vengeance Order for Ysa Van
Hope Van: - A young Midlander girl, and Yssen's adopted daughter and protege. She was rescued by Yssen from a cruel Ul'dahn merchant when she was nine years old days before the impact. For the past five years she has traveled with and studied under Yssen, becoming quite an accomplished martial artist and thief at the tender age of fourteen. The purpose of her training remains unknown to her, and she is often sent out into the field on tasks she does not fully understand. Despite this she is fiercely loyal to Yssen, and looks to him as a father. Often a bit obnoxious, sarcastic, and a tad over enthusiastic, she none the less seems to have a fair amount of potential.

Height: - Tall for an Elezen

Distinguishing Features: - At some point in the past five years Yssen began wearing an eyepatch over his left eye. He has a black, Duskwight tatoo on his left eye that is still visible despite the eyepatch. His back also has several long scars, similar to whip or lash marks.

Relationships

(Note - I, Yssen's player, have created this wiki as a bit of an experiment. This section, and the following Rumors section are meant to be open to public editing. Feel free to post a rumor or your character's known relationship to Yssen. Please try to be concise.)

Xenedra Ambreaus - They met in a cave, and from then on it was mischief and shenanigans a plenty. Then, she died. Seems it did not take though. These two have a lot in common, or so it would seem. Yssen refers to her as "the best gamble I ever made. Still."

Kari Illderthane - A fellow Duskwight. They met during an adventurer get together/errand running event. These two bonded pretty well, particularly after a blizzard filled trip to Coerthas and a stint seeking shelter in a cave. They seems to share a lot of the same opinions on the matters of being a Duskwight and an outcast.

Moenlona Yssenwyn - Found by his adopted daughter Hope, and cared for just a tad by Chiane, Moenlona is Yssen's second adopted daughter. He regrets not being able to help her as much as he could have lately, and is saddened that their relationship has become very strained.

Chiane N'ardente - A fellow Duskwight. They met at Carteneau, looking for things people lost. Yssen found out pretty rapidly that her family had been lost, so he adopted her into the one he seems to have been gathering. He looks at her as the little sister he never had, and as one of his finest students.

Abaigeal Causland - He has remarked that she is his finest student, and he means it when he says it. He delights in teasing her with pieces of his own personal puzzle. She has probably seen quite a bit of Yssen for someone not part of his gathered "family," and getting to know him is not an easy task. What is up with that, hmmm?

Hope Van - Yssen's adopted daughter. A terrible ball of energy, training, and obnoxious attitude. Yssen cares for her very much, but their relationship has become very strained lately. Silence could almost be the word that best defines it.

Kassandra Dawn - Yssen has hung out with her a couple times in his frequent trips to Soliloquy. He seems to genuinely like her, and enjoys her company.

Zesiro Ghalib - These two work together more often than not. It is said their meeting involved one of them trying to steal from the other, or both at the same time. Details of the exact relationship are somewhat unclear. What is clear that when one of them asks the other for help, they do so.

Sienna Skye -

Myllor Aurelion - He once helped him protect Hope. While it is pretty clear that Yssen does not agree with Myllor's moral code or most of his actions, he does respect him for doing the right thing when it came to Hope.

Ysa Van - Yssen's twin, and a crazy psychotic killing machine of an assassin. The rift between them is pretty well known at this point. Now that she is dead, the loss seems to have a very large effect on Yssen.

Deirdre Ta'ea - Man, do these two have some issues to work out. The last time they saw each other she shot at him, so he blew up the tree she was perched in. After a particularly bloody fight Yssen is wary of being around her, lest he lose his coveted sense of cool and lash out wildly. The two get along about as well as you would figure fire and ice would.

C'mil Eisengraf - An older Moonseeker mercenary. She once trained Yssen in sword play. No one is sure what happened between the two of them, but Yssen cannot stand her.

Rumors

(Note - I am going to repeat what I said above here a bit. Post whatever rumors you overhear, or would like spread to the public here. Please be concise and remember there is no guarantee that anything posted here is actually true. It is rumor. It might be true, it might not, but it will all be fun to play with.)

"Don't trust him. He's from Ishgard, and is spying on us for the Holy See."

"Ishgard? That's ridiculous, and the truth is much more sinister. He is a spy alright, a Garlean spy. One of the ones sent by the Wolf to subvert a City State just like Ala Mihgo."

"He and I have business to settle..." - Deirdre Ta'ea

"Yssen actually secretly runs an orphanage to look after all the children" - Kari Illderthane
