Character
♦ Beliefs and Religion
Menelwen's father went to great lengths to teach his little girl about the twelve gods. He would promise her that they would look out for her, keeping her safe if, for some reason, he was not around. She used to believe his words, for whenever something would happen, he would be at her side within a few heartbeats. However, when the strong Elezen tragically passed away, Menelwen quickly found her faith in the Twelve shaken. Why would they let someone who praised them so, who believed in them, fall as he did? With every passing event, no matter how large or small, she began to question how much influence the gods, if they did exist, actually held. How powerful were they, if they existed at all?
Logic and reason snuck its way into her mind as Menelwen grew into a young woman. She questions how strong her faith is to this day, though in the end, she always results to relying on her own strength to prevail.
♦ Appearance
♦ Behaviour
Never judge a book by its cover. You never know if a blade is hidden within the folds..
On the surface, Menelwen appears to be a strong, caring, independent woman who will go to great lengths to aid another however she can. It's not rare for her to slip a piece of gil underneath a warm loaf of bread as she serves tables at the different taverns she works at -- it coming straight out of her own pocket, of course. It's earned the nickname 'Gil Bread', and it is definitely not on the menu. She knows when someone is trying to trick her into getting free coin, and though she will serve them, she keeps her coin to herself.
Within the pages however...Menelwen is scared. Her calm, pleasant facade flickers from time to time as she works. Her heterochromia eyes glaze over as her gaze snaps across the room, jumping from the doorway and windows to the different tables. The break in her routine is quickly masked, however to the sharp eye of those who know her, it would be obvious that she did not feel as safe as she acted.

History
Childhood/Adolescence
While most families would have rejoiced at the birth of a healthy newborn girl, Menelwen's family was not one to offer her such a warm welcome into Eorzea. Rohisse, her beloved father, loved his first born with all the love a father could give, however his family did not. Rohisse's parents were disgusted with Menelwen's mother, believing that the babe's gender was a sign from the gods that Oriabelle could not be trusted to provide for their son and tend to his every need. Despite their disapproval, Rohisse stood by his wife's side, vowing to take care of both her and their newborn daughter. Distraught and hungry for her husband's family to adore and cherish her, Oriabelle made her own vow, promising to her husband and his family that she would bear him a son even if it killed her.
Two years later, Menelwen would earn the responsibility of an older sister, one who would be cared by her father alone. Oriabelle had succumbed not to the difficulties of child birth, but to the demons that plagued her mind. Fear had torn at her mind, ridding her of her senses and the last of her humanity. Thinking that she would bear not a son, but another daughter, eventually led the woman to take her own life. Rohisse returned home one day to find his wife, a kitchen knife plunged deep into her chest, and the life gone from her eyes. Time had not been on her fathers side, though with the aid of the village's conjurer, they were able to successfully remove a healthy, screaming, baby boy from Oriabelle's lifeless corpse. Blaming his family for both pushing his wife over the edge and causing her to take her own life, Rohisse packed what belongings he could fit into a cart, sold the small home to a farmer, and took both Menelwen and her younger brother out of the village and onto the road.
Traveling can be hard, even more so on children. Rohisse learned this the hard way, with both Menelwen and his newborn son soon growing ill during their journey through the shroud. This was not the first time the man had learned a lesson the hard way, and as time went on, it would prove that it would not be the last.
A Working Life
Being just two years older than her younger brother, it took a few years before Menelwen was properly capable of helping her father take care of both herself and her Calthius. At the rough age of thirteen, Menelwen began to see to everything that her brother could possibly need to both sustain life, and to keep him from breaking anything within their small home. With their mother unfortunately unable to be a part of their lives and take on her roll in the family, Menelwen quickly found herself both willingly and wanting to fill the void in their family's heart. The young girl found herself waking up at the crack of dawn every morning to prepare breakfast, coax the flames within their tiny fireplace back to life, tidy up the small cottage, and head to the market to fetch food for the day.
