− | + | What can be said about Reinard Ackerman... Well for starters, it can be said that's not even his real name! I know I know, Sky Pirates are not at all stranger to aliases, but Reinard was not always a Sky Pirate. There was a time, in a past few care to consider, that he was known as Reinar Paciscor, the sole heir of the Paciscor family. The Paciscors are from Ilsabard, but they are not your common Garlean family, no. They are traders! And though traders are not members of the military and not known for their presence within Garlemald, Paciscor still wielded influence through their many deals with the influential of the Empire. And Reinar, he was to gain control of it all once his old man decided it was time.
− | |||
− | + | But Reinar had a dreams of his own, dreams of magic, as one of the few in Ilsabard that could feel its flow and have it bend to his will. More importantly he dreamed of understanding it, of taking the reigns of his abilities and turning it into something grand. For that reason and others he left home, left his family, engaging in a journey of study and learning that would have him face many trials and struggles, before at long last landing him in Eorzea. Now... Eorzeans aren't quite fond of Garleans, a fact even the simplest of persons understands, and Reinard was as clever and sharp as they come. So when he stepped foot in Eorzean territory, a new man was born, a brand new face that would in time become known to many: To some he was a friend, an enemy to others. Lover; Ally; Villain; Thief; Pirate... Some even called him a fool. I? I prefer to call him by whom he became: Reinard Ackerman

+ | The basic principle behind arcanima is that it is aetherical equations and magic used to shape reality in accordance to the user's will. But few ever considered that those equations themselves might be shaped, and common knowledge says that these equations are best when written upon a flat surface, often the pages that compose a book or grimoire, but I always thought that to be limited.
+ | |||
+ | Borrowing inspiration from relics of old Allag I considered the possibility that arcanima may be written on objects of many forms and shapes, as well as varying dimensions; A gauntlet, the fabric of clothing, a shield's plate. So long as the equation's geometry is properly transcribed within the varying shapes, anything can work as a medium for arcanima. But that is only the beginning.
+ | |||
+ | Like magic foci, different materials can have influence over the magic cast through them. The right set of gemstones aligning a breastplate's armor may strengthen the durability of that metal beyond it could be acheived through simple hammer and anvil, and the type of fabric can better absorb the enchanted ink that serves as a conduit for aether to flow and shape the many shapes needed to cast a spell, and when applied that to a mage's robe, suddenly you have a man launching fireballs faster than most Thaumaturges.
+ | |||
+ | That's what aetheric circuits are: Aetherical Equations transcribed into unorthodox mediums to very specific effects. They provide a number of advantages over the standard medium of using arcanima off of books, but there are also a number of disadvantages. The first of them is that every transcription is final. If you produce the wrong intended effect the whole item is practically unusable and it is best to sell it for scrap. The other issue is that books, for all of their impracticality, are a multilayered medium that can store hundreds of pages worth of equations and some of the most complex spells do make use of that multi-layer format, applying equation atop equation. Other mediums do not have that trait, at least most that I've experimented with. It also means you're locked to a few set of simple spells, depending on the kind of medium you're working with. Finally, it is not a simple process and easy to make mistakes, which brings us back to the first disadvantage.
+ | |||
+ | I can't rightly claim to be a discoverer of this methodology. If anything I feel I am merely rediscovering it. As written above this takes inspiration from the few relics of old Allag that I've been able to study; Animatronics that defy comprehension, armor that is lighter than leather but sturdier than steel. All of these artifacts hold secrets that we can still barely glance into. Even Garlemald, who achieved its technological mastery through the study of these, have not fully mastered its making.
+ | |||
+ | This idea is still, at best, at its infancy and I'll probably not be the one to fully master, if it is ever fully mastered. But I write this in hope that someone else will carry on the work afterwards. Attached to this intro are my notes, observations and results of several experiments I've worked on. Hope they will serve you well.

+ | | <div style="font-size:11px; font-family:Georgia">It goes without saying that Reinard and Eira's relationship started in a very unconventional way. She was a naive young woman and he was a wanted criminal. Those circumstances led their first 'attempt' to end in broken hearts and wounded egos, and while time doesn't heal all wounds it certainly helps. The lover's second try at a relationship was not without its bumps, yet their feelings for each other persevered and their love blossomed. Interestingly enough, Eira rejected Reinard's first marriage proposal: The man thought to surprise her with an act, yet the young girl was not moved; She wanted him to gain her parent's approval before they tied up the knot and to make sure both of them were ready. In spite of those hurdles, Reinard is very comfortable with the idea of sharing a life with the Ul'dahn woman, even when that means to 'play nice' with the law so Eira does not get in trouble. His nickname for her came from him viewing the woman as his guiding light whenever he is at a loss. Reinard's past caught up to them both in the form of Julius Paciscor, Reinar Paciscor's father. His emergence and threat he represented provoked Reinard to call off the wedding and their relationship, reasoning that keeping her safe was to keep her away. Naturally, the young lady did not take kindly to his idea, which broke both their engagement as well as her heart. The last he heard of her she had departed to Thavnair.</div>

Though they're not actual siblings, Reinard and Iasmin's relationship grew to become akin to something like that. She was lost and without memory, looking for a brother she didn't even remember, and he was there when she needed him to be. Likewise when Reinard needed it, Iasmin was there to support him whether it was to help with his problems with the law or just offer a friendly ear... Or horn. Neither of them knew who was actually the oldest or youngest of the pair, but they seem to have reached an understanding of a sort on their own, with Reinard assuming the 'big brother' role.</div> | | <div style="font-size:11px; font-family:Georgia">They say you can't choose the family you're born with, but you can certainly pick some strays along the way and add them to the list.
