Looks & Mannerisms

Shoshopu is a shortish Lalafell, a little under three fulms in height. Her chestnut hair is kept cut short, plaited on either side of her face, and tied into a chocobotail on top of her head. She almost always has a cheery countenance. Even her deep green eyes look like they're smiling. Basically, she's adorable. Unusual features include thick, dark eyebrows and a darkened nose, traits that run in her family.
She's an extrovert, loving to meet new people and especially tagging along with people on adventures. She's intrepid! Curious! And ever the optimist. Determined to improve her craft, Shoshopu will absorb all the information she can about arcanima and magic in general. She will take any opportunity to help someone in need, as it's an opportunity both to be helpful and possibly learn something.
Shoshopu is a worshiper of the Twelve, looking to Oschon for protection and guidance on her journeys. However, she also has an interest in Primals... and wouldn't mind having a chat with a beastfolk about it, provided they weren't threatening to sacrifice her to their god.

Abilities

Shoshopu is an arcanist, with competencies in its contagion magicks and in summoning carbuncles. In fact, summoning an emerald carbuncle was her first act as an arcanist. Being self-taught, she acquired this skill at the expense of studying other fields in arcanima, and thus she is less competent in some of the important things, such as healing spells like Physick. She can cast Physick, just not in the efficient way that meets her personal standards. She's better at healing and sustaining her summons than mending wounds.
Shoshopu is also a novice practitioner of the ancient Allagan art of summoning. She has the ability to summon a Leviathan-egi, and she can control it to some degree, although not nearly as well as she can control a carbuncle. In spite of this, she can sustain the egi for quite some time and with relatively little effort.
She is also gifted with the Echo. Among other things, it grants Shoshopu an uncanny ability to remember just about everything she's read which was written by hand. Although she does not yet have at-will control of it, she also has a special way to take control of her egi that is associated with the Echo, which is detailed here.

Biography

1555-1571

Childhood
Shoshopu was born in the hamlet of The Golden Bazaar in Eastern Thanalan, on the 3rd Sun of the Third Astral Moon in 1555, to Hahabaru Uubaru and Ruruza Ruza, preceded by four older brothers. Her nomadic family traveled atop a group of giant tortoises, in traditional Dunesfolk fashion. Her parents had the largest tortoise, and each of her brothers had their own tortoise, scaling in size in descending order of age. Being the youngest child, she would ride on her parents' tortoise. At an early age, Shoshopu displayed a propensity to lose consciousness for hours at a time, with no apparent cause. Because of this, she was sheltered by her parents, rarely getting to leave the established premises of the caravan. She was jealous of the relative independence her older brothers had, as they were older and worked to support the nomadic family. She launched herself at every new bit of knowledge she could find, any opportunity to do something her brothers couldn't, before finally finding the most enjoyment in maths and geometry. She had the privilege to read more and pursue intellectual disciplines while her brothers had more physical competencies.
Teenage Years
As the family could only carry so many non-essential items at any given time, Shoshopu's collection of books and magical trinkets cycled often, exchanging old for new at every stop her family made at the camps and markets throughout Thanalan. The pursuit of knowledge never ceased for Shoshopu, nor did her odd fainting spells. She would recall vivid dreams from her unconsciousness, ranging from visions of everyday activities to abstract battles of geometric figures. In a routine visit to Drybone, Shoshopu saw for the first time what would grab her interest and never let go for the rest of her days: a Dunesfolk mage accompanied by a floating, fiery, horned creature. She slipped away from her parents for a few precious minutes to inquire about the familiar. The mage briefly explained the most basic principles of arcanima before the young Lalafell was dragged back to her family's caravan. Shoshopu never forgot the encounter.
In the months that followed, she began exchanging her old books for gil instead of different books. She saved money in this manner up until the next time the family stopped in Ul'dah to barter and resupply on her 16th namesday. It was that day in the market stalls Shoshopu found exactly what she had been looking for: a Carbuncle's ruby and a grimoire. The family returned to the desert that night, and Shoshopu didn't sleep until she successfully conjured her first Carbuncle.

1571-1576

After her first successful demonstration of arcanima, Shoshopu's parents finally began to see that she was no longer in need of their constant supervision, at least whenever she had Carbuncle by her side. She would join her brothers on their foraging excursions, where she gained firsthand knowledge of Thanalan's flora. It was also during this time Shoshopu was designated her own tortoise, from the menagerie's most recent clutch, though it would be years before it was large enough to ride.
During the chaos of the Calamity, Shoshopu's family, like many others, sought refuge in Ul'dah. The devastated, barren landscape could no longer support their nomadic lifestyle, at least for a time. However, the influx of travelers to the city proved a great opportunity for Shoshopu to learn more about arcanima, from bartered books and the words of fellow arcanists. Her family took up a more permanent residence near the outside walls of the city, and for the next few years, Shoshopu would venture into the city daily in her search for knowledge and experience. She and her brothers- but mostly her brothers- would occasionally steal food to get by. The youngest brother, Babariyo, would also participate in underground fighting rings, on which his siblings would place bets. It was in this way the family got by during their time in Ul'dah. Once the dust had settled, and the ports opened up once again, Shoshopu bid farewell to her family and set sail for Limsa Lominsa in 1576 to join the Arcanist's Guild.

1577 - Present

And so after an uneventful and quiet voyage, Shoshopu arrived in the grand city of Limsa Lominsa, and collapsed unceremoniously right at the docks. She awoke finding herself in the arms of a large Roegadyn with salt-and-pepper hair and a face smeared with oil and grease. Fyrilsunn Fiandoensyn. Apparently familiar with her affliction, the shipwright had taken it upon himself to watch her until she awoke. The diminutive Lalafell was intimidated by him at first; he must have been at least seven and a half fulms tall, and three fulms wide, and was a man of few words. However, Fyrilsunn proved to be an amiable fellow, and Shoshopu was happy to count him as her first new friend on her latest adventure.
Shoshopu easily made her way into the ranks of the Arcanist's Guild, and with Fyrilsunn's guidance, she began to learn the ins and outs of the city alongside her craft. Once she felt she'd learned all she could within the bounds of Limsa Lominsa, she obliged her urge to wander, this time with Fyrilsunn for companionship. The two became fast friends, and once the felt they had exhausted all of La Noscea of its adventure, the two looked to join a a greater cause, finding themselves in the Maelstrom Foreign Levy 81st Company, where their adventures would continue...

Relations

Romantic Interest     Platonic Love      Good Standing     Neutral Standing     Poor Standing
[edit]

Shoshopu met this Roegadyn woman through Fyrilsunn, who apparently met her at a bar in Ul'dah... and at first, she did not like her at all. But after a few more interactions, she realized that wasn't a fair assessment-- Cayenne herself is a nice person, if a little rough around the edges. She's similar in a lot of ways to Fyrilsunn, Shopu finds- they both value protecting the ones they care about. With axes. She worries about Cay, though-- she hasn't seen her in a while...

Shopu-fyrilsunn.png

Fyrilsunn Fiandoensyn was the very first person Shoshopu met coming off the boat from Thanalan to Limsa Lominsa. Being in his arms and seeing his face is her earliest memory of Limsa Lominsa. They're something of opposites, but they complement eachother more than they contrast. In fact, she finds great comfort in what is their most visible difference-- their size-- and can often be found clinging to him, sitting on his shoulders or resting in his arms. It's not so simple a combination of "brains and brawn", though. Fyrilsunn isn't learned in magic, but he is clever, being trained in naval engineering in his time in the Maelstrom, and a skilled craftsman besides. When he's actually in a talkative mood, Shoshopu relishes the chance to pick his brain.

Over time Shoshopu has come to develop romantic feelings for Fyrilsunn. Though he doesn't feel quite the same way about her, she knows he cares very deeply for her. From time to time Fyrilsunn becomes... interested in other people, but Shoshopu trusts him to never leave her behind.
Working together, the two haven't met an obstacle they couldn't overcome... save for one, very dangerous exception. However, Shoshopu is very forgiving and sympathetic towards him, and would stay by his side and help him conquer his inner beast before leaving him to face himself alone.
Shopu-kikira.png

Kikira Kira is Shoshopu's rival in cuteness! It's a completely friendly rivalry, of course. Shoshopu respects her courage and her work ethic, and loves to spend time with her.

In fact, Shopu feels as if Kiki was the little sister she never had; in spite of their different upbringings, they both have similar interests and attitudes. They're both adept arcanists, though Kikira specializes more in healing, which Shopu believes rounds them out well; and though Shoshopu has grown more attached to her Leviathan-egi as of late, she and Kikira bond over Carbuncles and Carbuncle theory. Kikira also happens to be fond of animals- especially Shoshopu's menagerie, from her flowering mandragora Loloran to her family's tortoises.
What she doesn't know is very much at all about Kikira's actual past. Though it's probably none of her business, Shopu is curious to learn more and wants to help keep it from negatively affecting Kiki's present.

A fast friend in the Maelstrom Foreign Levy 81st Company. At first she was quite concerned with his commonly self-disparaging jokes, but she eventually figured out (read: took multiple verbal reassurances before taking to heart) that he is just a sarcastic guy. She's interested in learning more about his homeland and the apparently very silly songs of his people.

Shopu-ralamano.png

Shoshopu has singled Ralamano Nulumano out as the smartest guy in the Maelstrom Foreign Levy 81st Company, whether or not he actually is, probably because they are both Dunesfolk Lalafell with an interest in arcanima. She holds a deep respect for him and she'll often seek him out to unload barrages of questions about magic she's unfamiliar with. In turn, Ralamano is something of an older brother figure to Shoshopu (in addition to the four brothers she already has), always looking out for her well-being.

During the 81st's battle with Leviathan, Shoshopu was inflicted with an aetheric illness due to the weaponized corrupted crystals, and Ralamano was instrumental to Shoshopu returning to wellness-- as well as Shoshopu's becoming a summoner in the process. Shoshopu feels that she owes a lot to him, and that he surpasses her in every way; she hopes to someday be his equal so she can return the favor, and then some, as he disproportionately shoulders the burdens of others. She thinks he could do to care more about himself, for as much as she's seen him care for others.
Shopu-rinhali.png

Rinha'li Dhavha is considered a peer. Shopushopu finds his shy behavior endearing, and that it belies his magical potential. She loves chatting with him about arcanima, as he is knowledgeable in areas she currently is not yet. They've both taken to meeting at Mist Beach and having what she calls "carbuncle club", in which Shoshopu helps him train with his carbuncles and they discuss arcanima and theoretical magick. Shoshopu was amazed to learn Rinha'li's dirty black carbuncle Skivver is actually made of lampblack, and does not utilize a carbuncle's ruby in its creation; born of necessity, for Rinha'li could not afford a ruby of his own and wished to circumvent it. Though Shoshopu gifted him a small ruby for Starlight, she's much more interested to see what he can accomplish with Skivver.

Rinha'li has taken to calling her "Master Shoshopu", which honestly makes her feel pretty awesome.
Shopu-senelle.png

Senelle Silverlight is a very kind and motherly figure. Senelle has great inner strength and emotional fortitude, which Shoshopu greatly respects, and she often finds herself confiding things in Senelle she would speak of to no one else. This Elezen has a way of working Shoshopu's secret worries out of her, and she's always happy to help with them afterwards. She appreciates every conversation they have.

Senelle provided a particularly large contribution to Shoshopu's recovery from her post-Leviathan aetheric affliction, the very catalyst that lead to the solution. For this, above everything else, Shopu finds herself indebted to the woman. She doesn't often find opportunities to help her in return, though.

Shoshopu would infiltrate the heart of a Castrum for the sake of this friend-- in fact, she has. She's very happy that Vesna is finally home, and safe, if not quite back to her old self yet. She's not sure Vesna ever will be... but that's okay with her.

Shopu-lyfriel.png

Y'lyfriel Sikah is a person Shoshopu greatly respects as a friend, leader, and scholar. It was Lyfriel who officiated Shopu and Fyril's enlistment in the Maelstrom Foreign Levy 81st Company, and being the mate of the company's Captain, she prefers to defer to Lyfriel over Rhesh'ir, since they're more familiar with eachother.

Along with Ralamano and Senelle, Lyf was a key contributor to finding a solution for Shoshopu's aetheric illness after the company's battle with Leviathan. Lyf has also been something of a patron to Shoshopu's education, having gifted her first-edition and signed copies of several tomes on Allag and the lost art of Summoning one Starlight. These books are among Shoshopu's most prized possessions.

This girl can cook! The easiest way into good standing with Shoshopu is through her stomach, it would seem. Z'koa also polite and has demonstrated that she's compassionate, as well. And on top of all that, she has a cute baby Chocobo!? What's not to like?

Emilienoix Bellegarde : Shoshopu and Emilienoix joined the Company within a sennight of eachother, and Shoshopu considers him as much a part of the company as herself. However, she believes he lacks a certain sense of empathy and tact, and he has said some insensitive things in the past that she can't help but judge him for.

E'yula Tia : Shoshopu has a generally good opinion of this fellow, but has come to learn he's a bit... sensitive. She herself is sensitive to this, but others around her aren't always, which can lead to stressful situations. He has some intriguing abilities she would like to know more about.

Fen'rin Taveck: Shoshopu's fond of this Roegadyn. He's the only magically inclined one that she knows of, and he's very friendly and funny besides. She finds him a lot of fun to be around.

Kodaro Ba'rococo : A Lieutenant of the 81st, she served under him in a temporarily-formed squadron not long ago. Shoshopu willingly defers to him, of course. He seems to be a nice and reasonable enough fellow, although she finds that sometimes his temper gets the better of him and she's willing to stand up to him if she feels he needs to cool off.

Lynn'wo Vahnal : His tricks are amusing, but Shoshopu is wary of him and his sleight of hand. How does he do that?? However, he showed enough concern for her during her time spent ill to bring her cookies on several occasions, giving her the impression that he's kind at heart. He can be very judgmental and not so fun to be around sometimes, but she's sure his heart is in the right place.

Rhesh'ir Zhwan : Shoshopu respects him greatly, being that he is the captain of the Maelstrom Foreign Levy 81st Company and all, but she hasn't gotten to talk to him that much. She finds him a little intimidating.

S'aerdha Tia : Shoshopu doesn't understand how this Miqo'te does what he does or where he learned to do it, but she wants to know. His sense of humor, however, is a little off-putting. While he has great power and has been very helpful to her, she's also seen him be quite upsetting towards others, so she has mixed feelings towards him.
