Not all tabs complete! "You come across a lake in the depths of winter, and a bear is walking across the surface. You would say the lake is frozen, yes? But what about deeper down? "The bear is able to walk across the frozen water as it is frozen on top. However, the water will not be frozen underneath due to the fact the ice traps whatever heat is left in the water and keeps it un-frozen. Ice is less dense than water and thus this is allowed." "Arata, you are the lake." Arata Matsuoka, known by some as Ara, was born on the 28th Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon. Arata grew up in the nation of Doma, living a peaceful enough life. However, like the other Domans, she was forced to flee to Eorzea when the Garlean Empire came and destroyed her home. A novice Arcanist and something of a scholar, Arata is best with healing magic, believing there to be 'enough people who are capable of causing hurt in this world'. While she is still learning the ways, she is competent, and it seems that she will be a strong Arcanist someday. Arata often haunts Limsa Lominsa's more scenic spots, as she enjoys looking at the ocean and hearing it while she reads. She is also sometimes seen around the Quicksand when she is feeling more talkative, though more often than not she will try and keep to herself to avoid bothering the other patrons. Otherwise, she might be out in Eorzea, doing field studies on various things. Arata doesn't mind the topic of politics, though she would prefer to read about them than debate about them. She finds the topic boring to talk about and often ends badly even if there is an effort to keep things civil. Currently employed under Turik Flarewyng as the resident healer of the Phoenix Nest. Arata's Inventory Arata always has a large bag at her hip so that she may carry what she needs. Last updated: February 19th, 2016 - Her grimoire, used to amplify her healing magics (and more hurtful ones, if it comes to that). - Two 'light' novels. These books are about 500 pages each, though Ara considers them 'light reading'. - An old, worn-out journal. Its pages detail her life back in Doma. - A new notebook. Its pages detail her studies, whatever they may be that day. - A pouch of cinnamon incense. - Pouches of loose-leaf tea of various flavors. She seems to enjoy the beverage. - A worn overcoat of the Yellowjackets. It's... far too large for her. Height: 5 fulms 2 ilms Weight: 95 ponz Complexion:  Porcelain Blue Hair:  Minty Blue with Periwinkle tips Eyes:  Light Gray with Cyan limbal rings Arata is a rather pretty Raen, blessed with very symmetrical features. She has a sharp, triangular jaw, covered in the beautiful white scales of any Raen. Her lips are thinner, as well as her nose, its bridge also hidden by her scales. Her icy gaze is angular, somewhat sultry in appearance. Her horns curve neatly around her head, coming toward her chin. Near her temples sit two small, black horns, poking out of her hair. She has bangs which sit on her brows, cut straight across. Along either side of her face rest two longer locks, the rest cut into a layered sort of bob which tapers off at the nape of her neck to meet more scales. Arata is a thin, petite Raen, not physically intimidating in the slightest. At 5 fulms and 2 ilms, however, she stands tall her her gender and race. On her thighs, twisting around her calves and onto her feet, lie more scales atop porcelain skin. Arata is incredibly pale, her skin with a faint grayish-blue tint to it. Her movements are always seeming calculated, as if every step she took was planned; as such, she keeps her head held high with an air of mystique and confidence around her. Her voice is deeper than most Auri females, and it doesn't help she tends to speak in a fairly monotone, disinterested voice. Her speech is always formal, no matter the situation, and she seems to always be thinking of what to say. Arata is incredibly inquisitive, though her tone would never give it away. She asks many questions, and expects just as many answers. If she can't find an answer, she'll simply find it later. Due to the fact that Arata's company is often books, she often smells like... well, books. However, she does burn cinnamon incense in her room (to keep that musty book-scent away!) so she can smell of cinnamon if you manage to get close enough to her. Faceclaim: Ishihara Satomi Voiceclaim: Sapphire - Steven Universe (skip to :56) Scars and Markings ❅ Upper Left Arm: Faint scars that appear to be tooth marks from some animal. Arata is not the type to approach unless someone warrants a question. If she finds something worth asking about, she will. She doesn't express emotions very well, often speaking in a dull tone that sounds almost uninterested, though don't be fooled; she does want to talk to people, she just isn't the best at it most times. She will ask many, many questions, and will not be satisfied until they are all answered to the best of the person's ability. She often criticizes others on their actions, saying that 'perhaps you should not have done that in the first place' even if the event was necessary. In the case that Arata finds one intriguing enough to speak with again, she will make a point to talk to them again, if only to bombard them with more questions. She will begin to open herself up more, showing a better amount of emotion. She begins to grasp what the person considers to be a joke and will laugh or smile at what she deems the right times. She may be an odd friend, but she is loyal enough, despite her odd demeanor. Flaws ❅ Hard to read her emotions. Reserved with them. ❅ Doesn't trust others very easily. ❅ Lacks empathy. ❅ Has a weak body, but especially her lungs. Talents ❅ While still learning the art, she is looking to be a skilled healer. ❅ Brews amazing cinnamon tea. May or may not share, depending on the person... ❅ Skilled at getting the information she wants, even if she doesn't exactly mean to. Quirks ❅ When she assumes incorrectly or says something funny on accident and is corrected on it, she will quickly try to make it seem like she meant to say whatever was correct or funny. (It's obvious she didn't.) ❅ She doesn't drink because she is very much a lightweight, and she gets clingy, which she finds embarrassing. ❅ She likes working with clockwork and things like it. The challenge and precision needed to dismantle and put these things back together is fun to her. ❅ If she finds herself in a situation where she has to exert herself, she usually apologizes beforehand. Once she does what she has to... it's obvious as to why. ❅ Tends to talk in an overly formal and articulated way, no matter the situation. She could be on death's door and still talk the way she does. Weapons Arata doesn't carry any sort of martial weaponry on her, mostly because she lacks the strength and knowledge on such things to wield them properly and effectively. One of her friends, Noah Tilraun, has offered to teach her some things in exchange for her teaching him some healing magics. Magic Arata is still training in healing magics, but it seems she is very proficient in the art already. Somewhat of a pacifist for her own reasons alone, she is nowhere near as proficient in more damaging magics, but will use them if it comes to it. Arata states often that she 'thinks in numbers', and is thus best with Arcanima over Conjury. Crafting Arata has recently taken up alchemy in hopes of finding a way to improve on the condition of her lungs. For now, though, that's all she's interested in learning about, crafting-wise. Still very much a WIP, but I've written some things down to make my life easier! Birth and Childhood (0-12) Arata was born in Doma, to her mother Katsuyo, a doctor, and her father Uchiyuki, an apothecary. Her parents ran a small medical clinic with their combined knowledge. As a child, Arata was very ill, and was often bedridden due to this. Despite her parents' collective knowledge on medical issues, they could never really cure whatever ailed her, and Arata grew to be a very fragile girl with especially weak lungs. It wasn't until she was eleven years old that her condition seemed to improve somewhat, and she was allowed to leave the house - though not without supervision to ensure that nothing would happen to her outside of her parent's care. Teen Years (13-18) Due to her incredibly sheltered early life, Arata lacked social graces and made few friends throughout her teenage years. She didn't understand people very well - and still doesn't - and earned the title of 'Ice Queen' due to her lack of expressiveness with other people. What she lacked in social graces, however, she made up for with a large amount of aether in her and a thirst for knowledge on how to use it. Her father gifted her with her first grimoire at age fourteen, and she immediately took up learning the ways of Arcanima. While she never received any truly formal training until she made her way to Eorzea, she was proficient in the arts enough to be quickly accepted to train under the Arcanists when she finally did make it across the sea. Adulthood Arata's life remained a peaceful one of study and assisting her parents in their clinic for the years up to the Garlean attacks on Doma. Arata quickly fled the rebellion, knowing that a war would likely kill her even if she wasn't fighting in it. She tried to insist on her parents joining her, but they refused, stating they had to stay behind and heal those who needed it. Alongside the other Doman refugees, Arata arrived in Eorzea, and has since been making a meager living trying to improve on what she had learned thus far. Things seem to be looking up for her in recent time, as her teacher, Klynsaelb Ghimfarrwyn, has allowed her to stay with her while Arata learns more in the art of healing, and she is employed under Turik Flarewyng as the Phoenix Nest's resident healer. The ice that most would say is around her heart seems to be melting ever so slowly. Please feel free to add your own rumors under PC! Some of these rumors may be untrue or greatly exaggerated. Non-Arc Events (2/18) Deranged Owlet and Glowing Coeurl (Status: Complete) (Who was Involved: Raziel) What probably should've been a casual day of reading turned into anything but when Arata decided to pay a visit to Limsa's overlook. It left her with another near-death experience under her belt, a scar, and... a friend. She'd met a male Seeker by the name of Raziel there, and while the two got off on the wrong foot, things soon changed when the man seemingly turned into a coeurl right before her eyes. It was then the Raen's weak lungs failed her, and she nearly lost her life had it not been for the man-turned-beastkin's untimely intervention. In the end, she learned a valuable lesson about bullets (pulling them out with your bare hands is awful), making friends (the more likely they are to spontaneously turn into coeurls, the more fun), and admirers (even she could make a Roegadyn blush).
