Rhesh'ir Zhwan
Contents
Character
- Rhesh'ir Zhwan is a miqo'te of many names and tales. He traveled the Black Shroud, round and round, moving along at early nightfall. Lately, however, he has been the leader of a makeshift band of wanderers without a path. Their adventures have lead them from the Shroud, through the desert, to Ul'dah, and elsewhere. Their journeys do not appear to be stopping anytime soon. With his past behind him, Rhesh'ir can now call himself an 'adventurer', for what it's worth. Eventually, that makeshift band became something more-- a Free Company. So far, their deeds have proven their strength through adversity, and the Captain only plans to continue that.
Appearance
Behaviour
Combat
- This miqo'te is skilled with a bow and dual daggers, and is also trained in hand-to-hand combat from his time with the Immortal Flames.
- Over the past months, Rhesh'ir has dabbled in the gladiator style of fighting, as well as studied a bit of Arcanum. Reluctantly. A few moons ago, a man named Shinku Tamashi took him on as a student of Ninjutsu. Rhesh'ir was very excited by this prospect and learned a few skills from this new master. However, Shin has disappeared, of late, and thus his learning came to an abrupt halt. He knows how to cloak himself to become invisible, and also the basic mudra of heaven: "Ten."
- With both skill and plenty of experience to boot, his fighting capabilities should not be taken lightly. His weakness, in terms of acquired skills, is magicks. He doesn't know how to fend against them, and is attempting to learn how to do so.

- ■ "That guy? He's here every so often. I hear he takes requests, if you want. Helps if you're a cute girl, though..." - Innkeeper
- ■ "Rhesh'ir Zhwan? You mean the Flames deserter? Should have put him to the wall." - Brass Blade
- ■ "Hah! That scrawny kit? Well...supposing he's not scrawny, per se. Like to pluck 'im off the docks and toss 'im in one second, and t'other I want to steal every Twelve-damned thought he has of fishin'. Where did he learn it?! The cute bugger...best he sticks 'round for the tourneys." - Wallhund Traggansasyn, Angler and Fishmonger
- ■ "Never talks about himself, good ol' Zee. Those miqo'te have tribes, yeah? I think his was from around here. Haven't heard anything about them in years." - Gridanian Tavern Regular
- ■ "I was there at his lashing. Bastard smirked. He ain't sorry." - Ul'dahn Onlooker
- ■ "We rarely get fights around here, but this one time, I saw him break up and put three riled 'uns in their place. That ain't no pacifist bard we see." - Knowledgeable Barkeep
- ■ "I knew of him, back then. He seemed to be a good man, but not very talkative. Always with his twin brother, for whatever reason. That guy was worthless in a fight." - Retired Flames Private
- ■ "R--That is, Zee is a good friend. A very good friend. We're going to be partners, someday, I just know it." - Tahla'li Tayuun
- ■ "...the scoundrel seems to revel in my frustration, at times." - Y'lyfriel Sikah
- ■ "He smiles even when he doesn't feel a smile, he walks away rather than stays in some situations, and he seems quick to avoid the occasional confrontation, whatever that may be. It's frustrating, to say the least, and at worst, I question what makes him so afraid that he becomes a shadow. ...but he reminds me of papa, too, in that in those moments, if you use the right words, has something worthwhile to say, and that reminds me that there doesn't always need to be something said, and there doesn't always need to be a bleak black-and-white outcome." - Onuma Ahntifi
- ■ "He's...I do not know what to say. A friend, certain. I trust him with my life. I don't know what he runs from, but it is all I can do to keep up, at times. Something draws me to him, and while it's troubling, at times...I cannot bring myself to care. I am drawn all the same." - Y'lyfriel Sikah
- ■ "Zee blows like the wind from here to there, and I suspect he's got his reasons. A wind that always blows never lets the leaves land, after all. I wonder what he's running from?" - Dawson Colwell
- ■ "Rhesh'ir is... Well.. he's Rhesh'ir! He smiles lots! And it's hard to tell if he's joking or not. So-- So he's kinda rude. Rude Rude." - Rahn'a Linzeh
- ■ "The best of men, that I have ever met. Though it saddens me to dwell too deeply on my Moon's past, that he earned such rank and respect through prowess is of little surprise. I love him, you understand, and always will. I know full well the light he's brought to mine own life." - Y'lyfriel Sikah
- ■ "At Coerthas, he seemed the leader of his troupe. A Keeper of the Moon...I would not have expected to see one in a commanding position. Not a male. I had to drag his ass away from a wyvern, and...he isn't without wit. Last I saw, he'd recovered from his wounds, and continued leading. Fair weather to him." - Sollele Frilaix
- ■ "Rhesh'ir? I don't think he ever takes anything seriously. He's always just... playful. It's kind of annoying at times truth be told, but I just take what he says with a grain of salt and a lot of sarcasm." - U'dahsh'a Nuhn
- ■ "Oh, Rhesh'ir... he's done his best to temper his true nature, but I sense it in him still. The bard wants to fly away on the winds, but our constant friendships have anchored him, for better or worse. I hope our shared experiences will fill him with the songs he needs to sing." - Dawson Colwell
- ■ "I like Rhesh'ir! He's a really great person, quite happy to listen to me, even if he -does- make me so red at times you'd think I was a Hellsguard. Regardless, I'm glad to call him my Captain, and even more so to call him a friend." -Fen'rin Taveck
History/Timeline
1551-1564 - Birth and Childhood:
- Rhesh'ir Zhwan is the third son of Rhesh Zhwan and Yabi'to Molkot, and the Sixth male Keeper to be born within the Pirarucu Tribe in his generation. Rhesh'ir was born two nonce after his twin brother Rhesh'ra Zhwan. He was raised in a mostly isolated, nomadic tribe that thrived on fishing and hunting game within the Northern Shroud. Their mother was and remained the Matriarch throughout their childhood, garnering them some extra privileges males might have not otherwise afforded, such as learning to read.
- Rhesh'ir showed early signs of promise and strength, which is coveted in the Keeper and Seeker lifestyles alike. If the Pirarucu had survived, Rhesh'ir would have been betrothed to one of the neighbouring tribes within the clan, as a sign of good faith and continuing friendship. His twin brother, however, never excelled at physical tasks. He was a thinker, a dreamer, and songwriter. Despite this, Rhesh'ir loved his brother fiercely, and they knew each as fully as one person can know the other. Rhesh'ra opened up with Rhesh'ir almost exclusively, and Rhesh'ir showed him kindness that rarely displayed itself elsewhere. Never was there one without the other.
- For all of Rhesh'ra's thoughtful and kind nature, Rhesh'ir equaled it with a haughty, proud and often-times openly stubborn one. He knew his skill and flaunted it, and thought less of those who didn't--except his brother. Rhesh'ir's cockiness got the pair in trouble several times when they were children, and usually ended with Rhesh'ra being injured, only creating more of a rift between himself and becoming stronger.
1564-1568 - Coming of Age and the Death of the Tribe:
- As with all the children within the Pirarucu, at age 13, Rhesh'ir and Rhesh'ra had to undertake the task of hunting a specified beast that dwelt somewhere within the Shroud. Rhesh'ir fulfilled his task with ease, but such was not the case for Rhesh'ra. Though he would never tell a soul, Rhesh'ir ended up doing both tasks for the sake of his brother. Though nothing was said, the elders within the tribe most likely knew this.
- At age 17, everything changed. That summer, a sickness took hold within the Pirarucu. It was mysterious, but swift. Flesh turned sour and fell from the bone; there was nothing to be done. At first, only the elders and children suffered and died, but slowly, the others began to grow ill. By the end of the season, Rhesh Zhwan had died, leaving the miqo'te in disarray. Many stayed and met their fate doing so. Rhesh'ir would have been one of them, had Rhesh'ra not forced his brother to leave with him.
1568-1572 - The Immortal Flames:
- South, through the Shroud and the desert the pair fled. It is unknown why they did not stop to make a home with another miqo'te tribe of the Shroud. Rhesh'ir was hurt and upset with his brother for the majority of the time, thinking that he so easily abandoned his family. However, he still followed Rhesh'ra, nonetheless. Once somewhat over his grief, he realized that they their escape brought about new possibilities and a new way of life--something that Rhesh'ra wanted deeply since he was a child, but never spoke of at all.
- They arrived in Ul'dah, gil-less. Then, there weren't as many refugees, but two Keeper brothers living in the desert city was a bit of a strange sight. Unsure of what they could offer, Rhesh'ra suggested that they join the Immortal Flames. There they would have to fight, but receive boarding, meals, and whatever else they needed to survive. Rhesh'ir was hesitant, knowing that his brother was no soldier. However, once the recruit agent started talking, Rhesh'ir was in love with the idea, and they both signed up shortly after.
- As expected, Rhesh'ir excelled in combat. But what was not expected was his ability to lead others well in times of high stress. He was able to keep a cool head during altercations, which lead many of the privates to look to him for help. He fought many battles, and in every one he looked out for both himself and Rhesh'ra. It was during his time in the Flames that he trained heavily in the Monk fighting style, where he learned of chakra and hand-to-hand. Still, his favoured weapon of choice was the bow. It enabled him to keep a sharp eye on his enemies and their surroundings.
- Rhesh'ir ascended the ranks of the Flames quickly through skill, circumstance and poor assigned leadership. By the time the Garlean invasion was in full effect, he was a Chief Sergeant. Rhesh'ra was never promoted, and remained a Private Third Class for the duration.
- The week before what would be known as the Battle of Carteneau was a very stressful time for the twins. Up until that point, their time served had been together, as promised, but the Flame higher-ups reworked many of the unit counts when splitting their ranks between the several large battles that were going on at the time. Private Rhesh'ra Zhwan was transferred to another Lieutenant to fight at the gate of Castrum Meridianum, where he met his death.
- Though enraged and immensely distraught over the death of his brother, Rhesh'ir kept himself busy where he was and tried to think of his men. And there was plenty to do. Before the news of his brother's death, Rhesh'ra's wife, Qhotah Jinjahl contacted Rhesh'ir regarding the fact that she was pregnant with his brother's child. On the eve of Carteneau, Rhesh'ir strongly urged his late brother's wife to inform the Lieutenant and take her leave. She refused. Rhesh'ir could not comprehend the sheer lack of care of her own unborn child before a highly anticipated battle, and forced Qhotah to leave with him that very night. It is a mistake that has haunted him, and will continue to, likely until his own death.
- The effort was all for naught, however, as Qhotah was very uncooperative. As Dalamud and Bahamut rained their terror from above, she fought Rhesh'ir at every moment. When she left his side, she was incinerated instantly by one of Bahamut's blasts. There was nothing left to save. Rhesh'ir could only watch the horrible battle occur, and for a moment, he thought to run down and return. But something pulled him away that night, and he fled back to the Shroud.
1572-1577 - Back to the Shroud; The Bard Life:
- At first, Rhesh'ir doused his grief with alcohol and friendly company. With each drink and each scorned lover, he fell into a deeper and deeper depression. Miserable and alone, he cursed the Flames, and all armies, for their lack of care and compassion. He swore to himself that he would never join anything or anyone ever again, and his anger continued to consume him.
- It was not until he was stripped of his dignity in the worst way that he decided to change the path he was living. His brother, the child, they were gone. There was nothing he could do, except live and not focus on the guilt. He contemplated Rhesh'ra's kindness and thoughtfulness, and how they used to sing together. At first, he could not think of reasons to sing, nor did he wish to. But he did try. Gathering what pride he had left, he dumped all of it into performing at inns and taverns. Through the joy of others, he found joy in himself. And the scars of his past began to heal, slowly.
- Though deceased, Rhesh'ir thought of his brother everyday, and tried to emulate him in many respects. His ego gradually lessened (but not vanished, certainly), and a genuine care for people took its place. During his time in the Shroud, he tried to make himself known by his music and smiling face. But even with his new-found peace, he never let anyone in, never allowed closeness. The balance he worked for and obtained was fragile, at best.
1577-Present - Rise of a New Adventurer:
- The serenity and solemnity of the Shroud did not last, however. Rhesh'ir quite literally ran into people that seemed to enjoy his company. And, surprisingly, he enjoyed theirs too. The more hours he spent with them, the more his lonesome lifestyle faded, much to his dismay. Many things have happened since their chance meetings, but his care for the people he surrounds himself with remains the same. Now that he no longer has to run from the ghosts of his past and those chasing him, Rhesh'ir will make an effort to help those around him and live his life to the fullest as both a leader and a friend.
Recently:
- The Free Company that Rhesh'ir and the others formed both suffered and grew more than anyone could have ever anticipated. The Foreign Levy 81st under the Maelstrom has renown and a reputation for taking on a few of Eorzea's largest foes. Ifrit, Leviathan, and even the Garlean Empire have endured their wrath. With the power of the Echo and a knack for uncanny talent at their side, the Company ever fights forward, helping each other and the less fortunate.
- In terms of his personal life, the road for Rhesh'ir has been a tough one. He struggles with speaking and trusting his fellow comrades, despite having to lead them into hard battles. While Rhesh'ir would do nearly anything for those closest to him, he struggles in many ways to show it on a day-to-day basis. It left him feeling isolated and alone. During all of these tumultuous feelings, Lyfriel, his mate, also became pregnant and gave birth to their unexpected, yet extremely loved son, Riel'a Zhwan.
- Since his child's birth, Rhesh'ir has attempted to improve himself for the sake of his family. Reaching out is much harder than he anticipated, and some events have left him feeling burned. But overall, as each day passes, Rhesh'ir finds himself a little happier, as if he is a part of something. His love for Lyfriel has only grown stronger, and after over a cycle, he has agreed to wed to her in the well-known Eorzean ceremony of Eternal Bonding.
Echo Power
Echo Power: Salubrious Voice
Brief Description: Falling in with the tradition of the Bards of old, Hydaelyn deems it fitting to grant Rhesh'ir the regenerative and morale boosting power of voice and music.
Whether in or out of battle, should Rhesh'ir play an instrument or sing, those around him are open to receiving an aetherial gift of revitalization, healing, and/or an adrenaline burst. Inflection and tempo of songs play an important role in what others could feel and what benefit they receive. This power also affects the user.
When this power is in use, noticeable aether swirls freely around him. A pulsing, white light can sometimes be seen at the base of his neck or chest. The swirling aether will be one of three colours, corresponding with the type of magic he is sending out to everyone.
- Adrenaline = Red Aether
- Revitalization = Blue Aether
- Healing = Green Aether
Stipulations:
- ■ The receiving person must be able to possibly hear Rhesh'ir, consciously or unconsciously, so being dead or having ears completely blocked in some way would not allow this power to work at all.
- ■ The louder he is able to sing/play an instrument, the wider the range of effects.
- ■ Rhesh'ir's current instruments he can use are the flute and harp. New instruments will need to absorb his own soul aether prior to them being able to be used for this power. This can take several days.
After Effects/Cooldown: Salubrious Voice is limited by Rhesh'ir's own body/situation, mostly. As with any singer, if his voice is overused, damage to his vocal chords could be severe. If he is playing an instrument, obviously he would not be able to fight at the same time, and would need to be in a place where the song could be played without being hurt as well. A small, unknown to Rhesh'ir, side effect of Salubrious Voice is that receiving peoples of his power may also feel flecks of Rhesh'ir's own emotions, should they be very strong during the song.
Tribe Information
Tribe Name: Pirarucu Tribe
Families: Zhwan + Mujuuk
Allied Tribes: Molkoh Tribe
Original Location: North Shroud - Nomadic, mainly followed the rivers
Sexual Mores:
- ■ The Matriarch is the only member of the clan that must possess a mate at all times. For the past few generations, Matriarchal mates have been more permanent, but in the past, they were rotated very frequently. This is likely due to times of struggle and a need for stronger blood.
- ■ Having a mate (husband or otherwise) is optional for the rest of the clan women.
- ■ Males of exceptional build and skill are "kept" and sometimes betrothed to allied tribes' specific females, but this is very rare. Most are not usually bartered, and are allowed come and go without ties, as long as they prove useful while within the tribe itself.
- ■ Males of "unworthy" status are dismissed, including the tribe's own male children when they are of age.
- ■ Male kits are numbered in the order of their birth. A number is given based on how many males were born in the current generation, not just by a single female.
Traditions:
- ■ Matriarch Selection: It is agreed upon that if the Goddess Menphina bestowed the Matriarch of the current family a strong daughter, that she would be leader of the clan until she either passes it to her worthy daughter or until her demise. For the past several generations, the Zhwan family is the bearer of the Matriarch. There is no frustration between families regarding this, as it has been the other way around in the past. However, said daughter would need to excel in early childhood coming of age rituals in order to even qualify. The candidate needs to pass rigorous trials and overcome placed obstacles in order to ascend to her title as Matriarch. This would include skills of hunting and wilderness survival, but also that of reading, writing, trading, and a vast knowledge of the "outside" world around them.
- ■ Child Rearing: It is the responsibility of the entire clan to raise the children, however the majority of the task falls on the few generations above the current one being raised. Therefore, children are raised by the young adult women of the tribe, and also some of the males that stayed. Elders and the middle aged hunters rarely interact with newborn kits, even if they were their own child. As the child grew, elders would show more interest if the child seemed competant. Though female kits were shown favour in general, children of the Matriarch were also shown extra respect and care, whether male or female. Thus, Matriarchal children were usually the most well educated and knowledgeable of things beyond their lifestyle, due to the stories and lessons they were told.
- ■ Tribal Markings: Facial tattoos to the upper face and around the eyes are given at the age of seven to children, both female and male, who had proven their worth and showed promise. As with several other Keeper tribes, it was a sign to the Gods that, should the miqo'te die, he or she would serve as a warrior in the afterlife. Additional markings are given in later years as signs of strength and cunning when hunting. These are especially important for male children to earn, as such markings would show other Keeper tribes what they have already accomplished.
- ■ Coming of Age: At the age of 13, all children would individually be put to the test on their Name Day. Each would be assigned a quarry whose territory was at least three malms away from the current location of the tribe, then sent out into the wilderness to hunt it. Whether it took hours, days, or weeks, their acceptance back into the tribe would depend on whether they brought back the assigned animal in good condition. The corpse would also be inspected, taking into account the skill of the kill, and the shape of the meat once it arrived. The females' results, especially a possible candidate, were scruntinized very harshly. After the child's return, there would be a celebration for him or her, and offerings to the child's Mother. Though rare, there were times when the child did not return.
Ceremonies:
- ■ Moon's Bounty Festivus: Each year, the Zhwan+Mujuuk clan would traverse the Shroud to come to a mutual meeting ground that was shared with allied tribes. This celebration would last for up to two weeks as they offered feasts, music, and dance to Menphina and her blessings. New children and Matriarch candidates were shown off, but all tribal members donned special festival attires and painted each other with bright colours. During this joyous occasion, hierarchy lines were blurred and everyone took pleasure in the company around them. It was something to look forward to each year, especially by the younger women seeking mates.
- ■ Coming of Age Ceremony: The returned child would be promptly bathed and cleaned until pristine. He or she would be dressed and painted, and possibly tattooed if the hunt was a very successful show of skill. Candidate females were given antelope fur somewhere on their attire to show their potential as leader. The Night would be devoted to teaching and telling the child of the world and their future with the tribe. This was done as a group, but the elders primarily spoke. Music is played and sometimes games and dancing took place, depending on the prowess of the child. Underwhelming hunt displays usually resulted in shorter celebrations with less enthusiasm. Males, whether honoured or not, would be offered their place within the tribe or be asked to leave. Those that could stay were not obligated to do so, and could go as they please. Males that were asked to leave the tribe were usually given up to a year to strengthen themselves enough to survive on their own. Very few exceptions are made.
- ■ New Era Celebration: Though not exactly celebrated as thoroughly by the Elders, like the Moon's Bounty festivus, the New Era was celebrated in the nearest city-state. In this case, Gridania. Usually, this was something the young women of the clan looked very much forward to, and would hunt for weeks prior to find the best furs to wear.
- ■ Oschon's Rite: Though rare, certain pairs of miqo'te who wish to "marry" undergo the Rite of Oschon. It can be compared to marriage, though rings are usually not the item of choice to be given. The Rite itself is a symbol of the lovers Menphina and Oschon, and their devotion to one another. This is a ceremony that depends entirely on the two individuals. It could be large, involving the entire tribe, but often it is more private, almost secretive. The traditional Rite has one of the Elder females perform the short ritual, but it is not necessary to have a shaman to make it official. One or both of the mated pair needs only to say the prayers out loud, as a show of promise to the Twelve and each other. Though optional, it is also traditional for the pair to exchange gifts, a meaningful trinket, after the prayers are said. Red is the colour most often associated with this Rite, so red somewhere on the attire is appropriate. The gifts themselves might also have red incorporated somewhere.
