Coatleque Crofte (pronounced cottl-ee-kay) is, by her knowledge, the only remaining survivor of her fishing village from the north. Her life has been hard since the Calamity, but she is slowly working to piece it back together and raise her station.
Contents
General Demeanor
Coatleque tries to appear and act like a proper lady at all times. She will almost always be in uniform as this is the only symbol she has of her current station in society. To the common man she can easily fit the role of a knight, but to a true aristocrat her sometimes rough mannerisms and verbal slip-ups are blatantly clear. She is still the daughter of a fisherman after all.
While on duty her purpose is clear. She acts with respect and exudes the authoritative presence one would expect of the Sultansworn. She will avoid idle banter as well and only interject if she has a relevant point to make. Otherwise, business is business.
On the chance that you catch her off of duty, she is shy and awkward socially. Having to see everyone else's lives play out before her on a daily bases, she often forgets to have her own. Since taking up her mantle as the public face of the Sultansworn she has begun to open up more socially, however.
Education / Job History
- See Background for more detail -
Behind all her pretense, Coatleque has a rather sharp mind. While she started off with nothing due to her upbringing, the eventual life she was forced into brought great opportunity for her to learn. She taught herself to read and write in her time alone, learned a few sensual arts such as massage, and how to speak to the cultural elite of the city. Granted, not much of this helps in her current profession. She is no expert, by far, but does retain basic knowledge of things she was exposed to in the brothel.
She knows the basics of conjuration as her first inclination upon gaining her freedom was to help others. She met her dear friend Jancis Milburga during this time and the two became inseparable. Unfortunately she just wasn't able to grasp some of the gentler concepts and decided to leave.
Taking up a sword, she joined the Brass Blades. She knew them as the ones who freed her from a life of forced servitude. They knew her as the high-class whore some of them often visited years before. Unable to gain an onze of respect among the wolves, she left to end the bullying if nothing else.
With nowhere else to turn she found herself registering at the Gladiator's guild with the mind of meeting a quick death in the Colosseum. It turned out she had picked up the sword rather well. Very well in fact, and quickly gained both respect and station. With new-found purpose in life and a talent she could exploit, she did not hesitate to swear her life in service of the Sultana when given the chance. Now a member of the Sultansworn elite, she spends her time protecting Her Grace while trying to keep the peace between her other investigations.
Spirituality
A firm believer in the Twelve, Coatleque relies on them for strength and guidance. She will not push her beliefs on others however. She simply does not understand how some could so blatantly ignore the truths that she feels are so evident in the world around her.
She used to pray to Menphina the most, in private, as she felt she has committed some slight against the Lover which had placed a curse upon her life that dooms any meaningful relationship to fail or be ripped from her. Recently, she has adopted Rhalgr, the god of her homeland, as her patron. This was spurred on by her most recent relationship failure, as well as the death of a close friend. These events made her realize she can no longer remain on neutral ground where politics and justice collide.
She is also closely tied to Nymeia, whom she believes places portents of things to come in the dreams of those who are destined to change them.
Combat - Views & Behavior
Coatleque will carry her longsword by her side while on duty. It is kept sharp, well oiled, and can be drawn at a moment's notice. She will use this sword both single and two-handed as necessary, favoring either quick defense or strong offense. She carries her shield only if brought into a campaign where a larger battle is assured. She has no love for war, however, and will avoid mass conflicts when possible.
Her mastery of the longsword is what one would expect from the elite of Ul'dah, though she is certainly no grandmaster swordsman. While she shows good form and technique, she tires quickly and makes more glaring mistakes the longer a fight goes on.
When fighting one-handed she will favor a semi-defensive approach with the aim to lock blades and disarm. When double-gripping her sword, she will favor a more offensive flowing style that uses momentum to maximize damage and force her opponent to dodge rather than counter. In either case, it is clear her combat is derived from a brute force live-or-die approach rather than the dextrous mock-combat fencing style.
Healing and Aether - Views & Abilities
While it is true that Coatleque has some minor training in Conjuration, she was never very adept at the concept. She finds it hard to focus, especially in times of stress, which is not a particularly good trait for someone attempting to heal others. She does know how to heal and even to raise. The former is very taxing on her, while the latter will leave her exhausted to the point of being momentarily incapacitated.
Her ability to use aether is otherwise unaffected. Her Paladin training has shown that she is able to channel the required aether through herself as if it were second nature. Defensive spells and offensive sword skills she can use with ease. Her difficulty stems from when another person is her target.
Background
(In Character)
Coatleque is not wont to talk of her past history to people she doesn't know. You would be better off winning her trust first. Otherwise, if hard-pressed she may anger and simply leave.
(Out of Character)
Coatleque is from a remote fishing village at the Southern tip of Ala'Mhigo. Born after the empire's invasion, this technically makes her Garlean if not for location. Built on the coast, of little importance, they eked out a meager existence far from any city. She was a typical country girl, the daughter of a fisherman, with no special skills or talents. Her parents were in the process of arranging her to be given away to the miller's son. A quiet life she was honestly looking forward to.
When Dalamud came raining down, a rather large chunk landed in the ocean off their coast. The resulting tidal wave destroyed the village and swept away a majority of its inhabitants. She was only 17 at the time. The remnants of the coast were soon raided by brigands from the mountains looking to make quick coin off the salvage. What few villagers remained were captured. The men were either put to the sword or pressed into service. The women did not fair so well.
Carted off in rags, they were taken by cover of night to Ul'dah and sold to one of the more high-class brothels of the under-ground. For three long years she served all manner of clients under fear of torture or death. Each night spent crying out to Menphina for deliverance. Eventually, as all people who think they are more influential than they really are do, the owner angered a very important client who was also a member of the Syndicate. Soon after, the Brass Blades swept through the establishment in a false-front raid to "expose slave trafficking". Coatleque escaped during the chaos as many of the courtesans fled.
She spent the next two years bettering herself and learning to fight. She has a mind for revenge against the brigands that raided her village so many years ago. But she would also like to find any others that may have survived, especially her family whom she has had no word of for these long five years. She has no interest in going back, however. She knows there is nothing for her there. She has embraced her life as a citizen of Ul'dah - even as she prepares to take her oath to lay down her life for the Sultana.
Relationships
Family & Personal Life
Her family was either killed by the tidal wave that destroyed her village, or captured by brigands in the wake of the Calamity. She has not heard from anyone in over five years and has all but given up hope of contacting them.
Coatleque appears to be all business on the outside. She will rarely joke, dresses conservatively, and does not show much outward emotion. Inside, however, she considers her friends very dear to her. She values life and treats all with the respect they show themselves to deserve.
She is attracted to strength and confidence. She needs to be assured she will be safe and protected, but not coddled and sheltered. While her recent past has forced her to bed both men and women, she would say the latter was not her choice. She longs for the life she was denied, to marry and raise her own family away from the bustle and dangers of city life.
People She Knows
This is a fairly exhaustive list of everyone that Coatleque knows in-game. I only add names to this list if more than two words have ever been said between her and them. If your name is not here and you think it should be, please send me a PM or a tell in-game. Coatleque knows so many people now, I may have just forgotten to add you!

A thoroughly despicable man, and shadow of Coatleque's past. He knew things about her she would rather have kept hidden. The man was often found in Pearl Lane surrounded by his girls, or making a fool of himself in the Quicksand. He was murdered in front of Coatleque one night when they were supposed to be having dinner to 'catch up' with each other. Her feelings on his death are torn between apathy and guilt as she feels it was her fault he let his guard down. |
The Azure Falcon of Carteneau plains. Anelia is a devout paladin and one of Coatleque's shield brethren in the Order. The two have had some disagreements over matters of duty and honour in the past, but it is clear that they hold great respect for one another. Coatleque reveres the veteran Sworn for her bravery against the Empire and hopes to one day be half the swordsman Anelia is.
Explosives expert for the Immortal Flames' Red Wings. Coatleque knows of his past criminal background from her own briefings, but is content to allow the Flames to deal with him now. His overly lax attitude regarding weapons restrictions in secure areas leaves her distrustful of him.
The always lovely bar maid of the Quicksand. The nights she is working just seem to pass too quickly. She never did tell Coatleque her last name, so the Knight simply calls her Miss Aya. Her constant kindness towards the Knight has caused Coatleque to take pause. She considers her a friend now, more than an acquaintance, and would try to keep her at length from the troubles of the city. The words Aya has offered as well as the quiet tea times they share have allowed Coatleque to relax on occasion, and take stock of what is truly important to her.
Bartolomeo was the first of her comrades she was assigned to work with. Together they served the Harbingers of Dawn, though only briefly. Since their departure, Bartolomeo has been rather aloof. Recently, Ser Filangieri has decided to leave the Order of the Sultansworn over matters of personal honor. Coatleque does not agree with his decision, but holds no ill feelings against him.
A raven-haired Bard that Coatleque had the utmost pleasure of meeting one night when forced to make contact with Alabrous Tane. While the two had butted heads at one time over Coatleque's love life, since the murder of Alabrous the woman has shown a little more sympathy towards the knight when she saw Coatleque's genuine sorrow over the man. Since then, Crofte has learned that Miss Callae also works for the monetarists.
Erik Mynhier ☩ ⚖ |
A man of no small renown, Coatleque only knows about him from the rumours and hearsay of others. He has recently returned after some ordeal and is ready to take up his prior mantle as Captain in the Immortal Flames, and as a fellow Sultansworn. |
First introduced as Fiona, then later as Fio. Coatleque is not sure what to make of her... him... at this point. What she knows is that Fio is a member of the Maelstrom, and maybe even some sort of undercover operative. He seems to take his work to the serious extreme, as is apparent from his recent change of appearance. The two share a distaste for the Brass Blades, though Fio is much more vocal about it.
An apparently Ishgardian mercenary who Coatleque first met when she separated his fist from Natalie Mcbeef's face in the Quicksand. She knows next to nothing of the man personally, but after recent events he seems to be much more docile, even civilized. They occasionally trade words in the Quicksand.
Free Paladin, and member of the Ala'Mhigan resistance. Coatleque's dealings with him have, to date, been through his sister Roen. He seems an honorable man. Despite the rumors circulating him, Coatleque has shown him as much respect as her position allows. She finds his accent to be comforting as she does not hear Ala'Mhigan as often as she would like around Ul'dah.
The fast talking owner of the Piquant Pumpkin. Coatleque met him when she chased off a street rat who was harassing his business dealings outside the Quicksand. He was so impressed that he offered her a job providing security. She hesitantly accepted, more so that she can keep herself busy when not on active duty, than for the pay (which she often neglects to collect).
A friend of Ser Warren Castille. Coatleque helped Warren search for him when he mysteriously disappeared into Coerthas while chasing Seimei Ikari. After an unexpected and open conversation behind the Quicksand, Coatleque thought she had some common ground with the man. Unfortunately, certain other events have left her questioning his sense of honour. While she can understand his reasons, she is loathe to condone them. Their current relationship is strained at best.
A personal servant of the Syndicate and man of no small power in Ul'dah. Coatleque has been sure to tread lightly around this man, all the while attempting to gain some measure of trust from him. While others find him insufferable, she at least is able to speak to him on his own level, as a nobleman of the City-State. She would not go so far as to trust the man, but neither is she able to discount the few good things he has done for Ul'dah. Having been forced to work with him on a closer level lately, she can no longer deny the extent of the power he wields within the Sultanate.
Coatleque met Jancis in Gridania just after the Knight had left Ul'dah to take up Conjuration. She was at first a fellow student, though already more advanced, and later became a close friend. Coatleque trusted her and eventually they became like sisters. Unfortunately, Crofte was unable to show nearly the same prowess at healing and decided to leave and return to Ul'dah. They continue to remain in contact, however. While Coatleque is busy with her duties in Thanalan, Jancis continues to roam Eorzea freely offering help to others. The two still cross paths whenever they can to trade news and stories.
A mysterious girl who always wears facial coverings. Coatleque has a poor opinion of the woman due to certain events in their past, but cannot ignore her duties as a Paladin. When the girl contacted her asking for help, the Knight hesitantly agreed. In exchange for protection, Jenzi has agreed to be another contact for Ser Crofte to use for information.
Kage was one of the Sultansworn who were under suspension pending an investigation into charges levied after the Nanawa mine incident. He was instrumental in tracking down The Rose and obtaining a redacted statement of Roen's spy allegations. While Coatleque's opinion of the man is still not very high due to their past dealings with each other, she is glad to have been able to help end his suspension and welcomes her shield brother back to the Order.
One of the personal hands of Lord Lolorito on the streets of Ul'dah. Kale is a proud and upstanding Monetarist loyalist whom Coatleque has had the pleasure of speaking to on numerous occasions. The two share a surprising amount of ideals when it comes to the welfare of their City, but differ entirely on how things should be accomplished. He has given her needed insight into the Monetarist's and she has tried to be as forthcoming with her Royalist views. For what it is worth, she would trust him at her back.
An Immortal Flame and second in command of the Red wings division. Coatleque has worked with him on occasion, most recently when a Garlean terrorist attempted to poison the city state of Ul'dah and assassinate the Sultana. She knows little of the man's personal life, but has great respect for him professionally and will trust his judgement.
A Sultansworn in training. Koporo currently serves under Kage Kiryuu. Coatleque sees him as impatient and short-fused. His anger seems to speak before his better judgement when conflict begins to escalate around him. Coatleque has tried lending her hand to Kage's mentoring to try and guide Ser Aporo down a more diplomatic path.
A young Miqo'te adventurer not from Ul'dah. She seems to wander the length and breadth of Eorzea and pops-up unexpectedly from time to time. Coatleque first saw her at the Grindstone where she was the first competitor to ever enter (and win) with a bow. While not much older than Leanne, Coatleque feels partly responsible to protect the girl from the seedier parts of the City whenever she is in Thanalan; Even if she does not know her very well personally.
Natalie Mcbeef ☠ ☩ ♥ |
Never before was there a more perfect example of comedic tragedy such as Natalie Mcbeef. The Miqo'te was a walking disaster with a good heart who Nymeia conspired against almost daily. While the two of them had begun their relationship in bitter conflict, over the course of their work they had grown to respect each other for the roles they each played in the security of the city-state. Natalie was eventually killed in action during a botched raid on La Noscean soil. Coatleque feels partly responsible as she was present to try and avoid that very thing from happening. No matter what people may think about Natalie Mcbeef, Coatleque will stand and defend her as a virtuous and upstanding Sultansworn who gave her life to protect the Sultanate. |
A gentleman of fortune from Limsa Lominsa that Coatleque met through her friend Roen Deneith. The Knight has been trying to gather information on him for Roen's sake. She knows they are working together against the Monetarist Jameson Taeros, and would spare Roen being double-crossed by apparent allies yet again. All she knows so far is that he is a well-known and ruthless businessman in the lower city.
One of the older Sworn, and a lieutenant. Nyalie tends to avoid direct confrontation, preferring her role as requisitions officer and maintaining the palace armory. She still keeps her sword arm, however, and is always willing to help should need arise.
A rather elegant and refined Roegadyn woman. She has recently put her trust in the abilities of Ser Crofte to help keep her family from further harm. Trust that Coatleque assures her is not misplaced, and has gone so far as to wager her own life in exchange for.
A dark and brooding Highlander and expert with the bow. Coatleque knows little of this man, but sees him around quite often. He takes strong offense to the properness of her speech, becoming quite irate whenever she refers to him as Master, or almost any other title.
Chief Flame Sergeant of the Immortal Flames. Coatleque traded her assistance to him for information in another investigation. Since then, Ser Melkire has been held under duress by a madman. He was complicit to multiple attacks against Ul'dah. While Coatleque understands the man's reasoning, she cannot condone his actions. For her part, she will let the Immortal Flames handle justice of their own.
A wealthy merchant and clothing designer who has made himself a name in Ul'dah. He seems to respect the Knight and always stops to greet her when they pass. She helped him resolve an issue regarding some stolen pants, and in return he made her an exquisite white dress which she wears now whenever possible. More recently, Otto has begun to dote upon her more with gifts of fine clothing, food, and drink. Others have looked at this in a negative light, while she is unsure what to think of it herself and consistently tries to downplay these advances. His constant flatteries are slowly beginning to play on her emotions.
Roen Deneith ♥ ☩ |
An Ala'Mhigan born Garlean who has left her heritage behind. Roen has been hunted unceasingly by her father, and recently has been acquitted of treason charges by Coatleque with the help of Natalie Mcbeef and others. During Roen's imprisonment, Coatleque was her personal gaoler and attended her every morning and evening. Coatleque would speak with her often at night, first to try and distract the woman from her troubles, but then later out of her own curiosity as the two grew closer. Out of this a friendship has blossomed. Coatleque would stand with her new shield sister against whatever threatens her on the horizon. |
A free paladin and gladiator often seen wandering around Ul'dah. The Highlander sems to have taken an interest in Coatleque. While the Knight is reluctant to return such interest, she does consider Sarial a friend.
A self proclaimed master thief and Free Paladin, Coatleque doesn't know what to believe about S'Honji. His overly flirtatious nature combined with rumors she hears from other women around Ul'dah leave her believing he is nothing more than an overly fanciful story teller.
A Miqo'te woman whom was previously set to wed Ser Warren Castille. For unknown reasons, the two had parted long ago. Coatleque helped Warren search Coerthas for her when she disappeared suddenly. Since then she has come back into Warren's life and the two have been competing for his affections. Warren chose his former love in the end. Coatleque does not trust her intentions and believes she will only hurt Warren again.
Tasa Rhyzul ♥ ⚓ |
A strong, stoic Elezen whom Coatleque met while assisting the Harbingers. Coatleque quickly found herself drawn to the woman's confident attitude. Their relationship had a few quick ups and downs, but with Coatleque's promotion her work has conspired to keep the two apart. They remain good friends however, and the Knight still looks up to the older woman's mothering influence in her life. |
Not so much a friend as an acquaintance. Coatleque knows next to nothing about him, save what she unfortunately has to overhear when in the same room. Her first impression was of him and another member discussing their many visits to the brothels of Ul'dah - a conversation which has left her with distaste for them both.
A rather enigmatic Miqo'te - Coatleque met Vali at her first orientation for the Piquant Pumpkin. Since then she's learned they share some common ground through past acquaintances. Coatleque doesn't know what to make of the girl yet, but she always seems to be around wherever Coatleque goes. She has recently shared that a large bounty has been placed on her head by the Empire. Until this is removed, she will be away from Ul'dah in hiding.
One of the few honest merchants in Ul'dah. The man excels at selling low quality merchandise at overly affordable prices. In fact, most of his goods he practically gives away. Coatleque has yet to buy anything from him, but still keeps the 'plot device' he gave her just in case she has need for instant smoke in the middle of the desert. Having read his personal memoirs, she has a certain insight to the man that others may not have. It may be for this reason that she leaves things pertaining to his business to the Brass Blades to follow-up on. Business which has recently turned violent, much to her dismay. She now fears for the man's continued existance in the city.
A Free Paladin and colleague of Coatleque's. He was often found in the Quicksand in past times. They were quickly drawn to each other and shared an intimate, though brief relationship. It ended when he left her to once again pursue his former love who had left him before. Coatleque has never quite gotten over his reasons, but understands them to the best of her abilities. The air around them has been tense since then, as former lovers tend to be. Recent acts of vengeance have once again coloured her impression of Warren, causing her to wonder if she ever truly knew the man to begin with.
A friend that Coatleque met while under previous employment. His rather forward advances have made for some lightly awkward conversation mainly do to Coatleque's obliviousness. They have tried to share conversation recently, but Coatleque's duties have kept her busy. She finds herself promising over and over that she will make time, but only winds up disappointing them both. |

- Kahn'a Od'hilkas: "By the past I would have admitted it a little hard to go beyond what seems to be an absent-minded penchant, but since then she proved to be... reliable. And yes, she definitely is more than a young figure of righteousness."
